But lower cost doesn’t mean lower quality: our technicians inspect all rotors, including buckets, gaskets and overspeed disks. Fixed angle rotors are closely inspected for body integrity; swinging bucket rotors supplied with buckets are checked for proper weight distribution. We replace lid gaskets and other hardware as needed prior to shipping. When possible we run each rotor in a compatible centrifuge.
In combination with centrifuges, rotors are used in a wide range of applications from clinical and blood banking settings to microbiology, tissue culture, molecular biology, genomics, drug discovery and proteomics, among others. Generally speaking, the size of any given rotor in inversely proportional to its maximum speed capacity – in other words, the larger the rotor, the lower the max speed will be. Rotors can be fabricated from different materials, including aluminum and titanium. More recently, some manufacturers have been producing fixed angle rotors made of carbon fiber.
Smaller swinging bucket rotors can be used in ultra-centrifuge applications for rate-zonal and isopycnic separations, while larger swinging bucket models can accommodate bottles and blood bags for separating large-volume samples at lower speeds, batch harvesting of whole cells from growth media, and large volume tissue culture processing.
Fixed angle rotors hold sample tubes at a fixed angle to the rotor cavity so that when the rotor begins to spin the solution in the tubes reorients. Fixed angle rotors are the most common type of rotor and are often used for basic pelleting applications including bacteria cells, yeast, and mammalian cell pelleting. Efficiency of fixed angles rotors is indicated by a rotor’s K factor. Fixed angle rotors can also be used for isopycnic separations.
As the name indicates, vertical or near-vertical rotors hold sample tubes vertically or close to a 90° angle during rotation. They can’t be used for pelleting but are the most efficient type of rotor for isopycnic separations and are often used in plasmid DNA, RNA, and lipoprotein isolations.
