Refurbished Thermo Scientific 1385 Biosafety Cabinet for Sale

The Thermo Scientific 1385 is a 4-foot Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet designed to provide personnel, product, and environmental protection for cell culture, microbiology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical research, clinical laboratories, and other contamination-sensitive biological applications. Part of Thermo Scientific's proven 1300 Series A2 platform, the 1385 combines a space-efficient 4-foot footprint with a 10-inch working sash opening, SmartCoat interior, energy-efficient brushless DC motor technology, and intelligent airflow management.

With approximately four feet of usable interior width, the Thermo 1385 provides substantial working room for routine cell culture and biological research without requiring the additional laboratory space of a 5- or 6-foot biosafety cabinet. The work area can accommodate culture vessels, pipettes, media bottles, sample racks, aspiration equipment, and other materials commonly used during biological procedures while maintaining a practical footprint for equipment-dense laboratories.

A defining characteristic of the 1385 is its 10-inch working sash opening. Compared with Thermo 1300 Series cabinets configured with an 8-inch aperture, the 10-inch opening provides greater vertical access to the chamber. This can make loading larger items easier and may provide a more comfortable working configuration for researchers who prefer additional access to the work area.

The 1385 is also distinguished by its SmartCoat interior. Within Thermo's 1300 Series A2 lineup, the 1385 is the 4-foot, 10-inch-opening SmartCoat package, while models such as the 1375 use a one-piece stainless steel interior. The SmartCoat chamber provides a smooth, cleanable work environment while offering an alternative to traditional all-stainless interior construction.

At American Instrument Exchange, each Thermo Scientific 1385 biosafety cabinet is inspected and tested by our technicians prior to shipment. Overview

The Thermo Scientific 1385 combines the biological containment capabilities of a Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet with the space efficiency and operator-focused design of Thermo's 1300 Series A2 platform.

During operation, inward airflow through the front opening helps protect personnel from aerosols generated within the work chamber. HEPA-filtered vertical downflow helps protect samples and materials from airborne contamination, while exhaust air passes through HEPA filtration before leaving the cabinet.

The 1385 incorporates real-time airflow compensation designed to maintain stable inflow and downflow conditions as resistance across the HEPA filters changes over time. Rather than relying on a fixed blower setting as filters gradually load, the cabinet adjusts blower performance to help maintain appropriate airflow.

Brushless DC motor technology further improves operating efficiency and reliability compared with many older-generation biosafety cabinet designs. When the front sash is lowered, the cabinet can reduce blower speed, decreasing energy consumption during periods when the work area is not actively being used.

The result is a BSC designed not only around biological containment but also around the realities of everyday laboratory operation: energy consumption, operator comfort, noise, cleaning, and long-term use.

Why Choose the Thermo Scientific 1385?

The Thermo Scientific 1385 is particularly well suited for laboratories seeking a 4-foot Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet with a 10-inch operating opening and SmartCoat interior.

For many routine cell culture and microbiology procedures, a 4-foot cabinet provides an effective balance between usable workspace and laboratory footprint. The 1385 offers enough room for typical culture vessels, media, pipettes, sample racks, aspiration equipment, and other materials without consuming the additional wall and floor space required by a larger BSC.

The 10-inch working opening provides additional vertical access compared with an 8-inch configuration. This can make the cabinet particularly appealing to researchers who routinely move larger racks, vessels, or small instruments into and out of the work area.

The SmartCoat chamber is another defining characteristic. Laboratories comparing several refurbished Thermo 1300 Series cabinets may encounter otherwise similar models with either SmartCoat or one-piece stainless steel interiors. The 1385 represents the SmartCoat option within the 4-foot, 10-inch-opening package configuration.

Combined with its adjustable stand, UV light, armrests, DC motor technology, intelligent airflow management, and energy-saving operating modes, the 1385 provides a well-equipped workstation for frequent biological research use.

Thermo Scientific 1385 vs. Thermo Scientific 1375

The Thermo Scientific 1385 and 1375 are closely related 4-foot Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinets with 10-inch working openings, making them particularly useful models to compare when purchasing refurbished equipment.

The principal difference is the interior construction.

The Thermo 1385 uses a SmartCoat interior, while the Thermo 1375 uses a one-piece stainless steel interior.

Both configurations provide cleanable work environments appropriate for biological research, but laboratories may have preferences based on existing equipment, cleaning protocols, durability expectations, or standardization requirements.

The factory package is another consideration. The 1385 package was configured with a manual adjustable-height stand, factory-installed UV light, and armrests, providing a complete workstation configuration.

For laboratories specifically seeking stainless steel chamber construction, the 1375 may be preferable. For laboratories that prefer the SmartCoat interior or are replacing an existing 1385, the 1385 provides the corresponding 4-foot, 10-inch-opening configuration.

This distinction is particularly valuable when purchasing refurbished Thermo BSCs because several 1300 Series models share nearly identical external dimensions while differing in their interior materials, sash openings, and factory accessory packages.

Thermo Scientific 1385 vs. Thermo Scientific 1395

The Thermo Scientific 1385 and 1395 provide another useful comparison because both are 4-foot SmartCoat Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinets.

The primary difference is the working sash opening.

The Thermo 1385 has a 10-inch working aperture, while the Thermo 1395 uses an 8-inch working aperture.

This means laboratories that specifically prefer the SmartCoat chamber can choose between two closely related configurations based largely on the desired operating opening.

The 1385 provides additional vertical access to the work area, while the 1395 may be preferable when replacing an existing 8-inch-opening cabinet or maintaining consistency across a laboratory already standardized around an 8-inch operating height.

For refurbished-equipment buyers, understanding this distinction can help prevent selecting a cabinet that appears nearly identical externally but provides a different working configuration.

SmartCoat Interior vs. Stainless Steel Interior

Thermo offered its 1300 Series A2 cabinets with different interior configurations, and this is one of the most useful distinctions to understand when comparing individual models.

The Thermo 1385 uses the SmartCoat interior, while closely related models such as the 1375 use one-piece stainless steel chamber construction.

Both are designed to provide a smooth, cleanable biological work environment. Stainless steel is familiar to many laboratories because of its durability, chemical resistance, and widespread use in laboratory equipment. SmartCoat provides an alternative interior surface while retaining the airflow and containment characteristics of the 1300 Series platform.

For most laboratories, cabinet classification, condition, certification readiness, working aperture, size, and overall configuration will be more important than interior material alone. However, laboratories with established cleaning protocols or equipment-standardization requirements may have a specific preference.

Identifying the interior type is therefore useful when replacing an existing BSC or purchasing several matching cabinets for the same facility.

Energy Efficiency & Night Setback Operation

Biosafety cabinets can represent a significant portion of laboratory energy consumption, particularly in facilities operating multiple BSCs for extended periods.

The Thermo 1385 incorporates brushless DC motor technology and intelligent blower control designed to reduce energy consumption compared with older constant-speed cabinet designs.

When the sash is lowered, blower speed can be reduced substantially, decreasing power consumption during periods when the cabinet is not actively being used. Thermo's Night Setback functionality provides an additional reduced-operation mode for periods of inactivity.

These features can be especially useful in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, university, and clinical research facilities where several biosafety cabinets may remain powered for long periods.

Reduced-speed operation can also decrease unnecessary HEPA filter loading compared with continuously operating the cabinet at full working airflow.

Operator Comfort & Ergonomics

Biosafety cabinets are often used for repetitive procedures lasting several hours, making ergonomics an important consideration when selecting equipment.

The Thermo 1385 incorporates a sloped-front design, armrests, bright interior illumination, and low-noise operation to create a more comfortable working environment for researchers performing extended procedures.

The 10-inch working sash opening provides generous vertical access to the chamber, while the adjustable-height stand allows the cabinet height to be configured for the laboratory and operator.

Armrests help support the operator's working position while keeping the front intake area clear, and the large unobstructed work surface provides room to organize materials without unnecessary crowding.

These features can be particularly valuable in cell culture facilities where technicians may spend several hours each day working inside a BSC.

Common Applications

The Thermo Scientific 1385 is well suited to mammalian cell and tissue culture, stem cell research, microbiology, molecular biology, virology, biotechnology research, pharmaceutical development, vaccine research, gene and cell therapy research, clinical and diagnostic procedures, and other applications requiring Class II Type A2 containment.

Its combination of a 4-foot work area and 10-inch operating opening makes it particularly practical for routine cell culture workflows where researchers need sufficient working room without dedicating the additional laboratory space required by a larger cabinet.

Ideal Laboratory Environments

The Thermo Scientific 1385 is a strong choice for biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical research laboratories, university research centers, hospital laboratories, contract research organizations, clinical facilities, startup laboratories, government research facilities, and other life-science organizations requiring Class II Type A2 containment.

Thermo also configured the 1385 as an accessory package that included an adjustable-height stand, UV light, and armrests.

For laboratories comparing refurbished cabinets, the appropriate choice may depend on interior-material preference, existing equipment standards, condition, accessories, and current availability.

What is the difference between the Thermo 1385 and Thermo 1395?

Both models are 4-foot Class II Type A2 cabinets with SmartCoat interiors.

The primary difference is the working sash opening. The Thermo 1385 uses a 10-inch working aperture, while the Thermo 1395 uses an 8-inch working aperture.

The 1385 may be preferable when additional vertical access is desired. The 1395 may be a better match when replacing an existing 8-inch-opening cabinet or maintaining a consistent operating configuration across several BSCs.

What is the difference between the Thermo 1385 and Thermo 1335?

The Thermo 1385 and 1335 are both 4-foot, 120V Class II Type A2 package configurations, but they differ in both interior material and working aperture.

The 1385 has a SmartCoat interior and 10-inch opening, while the 1335 has a one-piece stainless steel interior and 8-inch opening.

These differences are worth considering when replacing an existing cabinet or standardizing multiple workstations throughout a laboratory.

What is SmartCoat?

SmartCoat is the alternative chamber finish Thermo offered alongside one-piece stainless steel interiors on its 1300 Series A2 platform.

It provides a smooth, cleanable work environment while allowing Thermo to offer laboratories a choice between coated and stainless steel chamber construction.

For most laboratories, factors such as cabinet condition, size, working opening, certification readiness, and overall configuration will be more important than chamber material alone. However, laboratories with established cleaning protocols or equipment-standardization requirements may prefer one configuration over the other.

Is SmartCoat better than stainless steel?

Neither configuration is universally better for every laboratory.

A stainless steel chamber provides the familiar durability and chemical resistance associated with stainless laboratory equipment. SmartCoat provides a smooth alternative interior surface while retaining the same basic 1300 Series containment platform.

Laboratories should consider their cleaning protocols, preferred disinfectants, existing equipment standards, cabinet condition, and intended applications when comparing the two.

Is the Thermo 1385 suitable for cell culture?

Yes. The Thermo 1385 is well suited to many mammalian cell culture, tissue culture, stem cell, and related biological procedures requiring Class II Type A2 containment.

The 4-foot work area provides useful room for culture vessels, pipettes, media bottles, aspiration equipment, tube racks, and other materials commonly used during cell culture procedures.

Operators should follow appropriate BSC work practices and avoid blocking the front and rear airflow grilles.

What do the airflow monitoring systems on the Thermo 1385 do?

The Thermo 1300 Series incorporates independent monitoring of cabinet airflow conditions. The system evaluates inflow and downflow and can provide audible and visual warnings when airflow moves outside established operating limits.

The cabinet also monitors the position of the front window to determine whether it is at the designated working position, closed for reduced-energy operation, or positioned at an inappropriate intermediate height.

These monitoring systems provide useful information during routine operation, but they do not replace periodic field certification.

What does the Thermo Performance Factor indicate?

The Thermo Performance Factor is a cabinet-status indicator that incorporates information related to HEPA filter loading, airflow status, and values established during certification.

This provides operators with an additional indication of the cabinet's operating condition as it accumulates operating hours and filter resistance changes.

A warning or unacceptable performance indication should be investigated rather than ignored. The cabinet's internal monitoring system supplements—but does not replace—formal certification by qualified personnel.

What does a CAL message or airflow alarm on a Thermo 1385 mean?

A persistent calibration or airflow warning indicates that the cabinet requires evaluation.

Possible causes can include airflow calibration, HEPA filter loading, blower performance, sash position, sensor issues, or another condition affecting the cabinet's operating parameters.

A warning should not simply be cleared repeatedly without determining why it is occurring.

For laboratories throughout New England, AIE Laboratory Services can troubleshoot Thermo 1300 Series cabinets, evaluate airflow performance, perform repairs or HEPA filter replacement when necessary, and recertify the cabinet following service.

Does the Thermo 1385 have a UV light?

Yes. Thermo configured the 1385 package with a factory-installed UV light.

The UV system incorporates safety interlocks associated with the front window position. UV exposure should not be treated as a replacement for proper manual cleaning and disinfection of the work chamber.

Actual condition and operation of the UV system should be confirmed on the individual refurbished cabinet.

Does UV light replace cleaning and disinfection of the BSC?

No.

The cabinet interior should still be cleaned and disinfected according to the laboratory's procedures and the requirements of the materials being handled.

UV should be regarded only as a supplemental feature. Appropriate surface cleaning, good aseptic technique, proper cabinet operation, and routine certification remain fundamental to contamination control.

Does the Thermo 1385 include an adjustable-height stand?

The original Thermo 1385 package configuration included a manual adjustable-height stand along with UV light and armrests.

For refurbished equipment, customers should always confirm the accessories included with the specific cabinet being offered, particularly when comparing units that may have been reconfigured during their previous service life.

Why is an adjustable-height stand useful?

An adjustable stand allows the working height of the BSC to be better matched to the operator, laboratory furniture, and surrounding equipment.

This can be particularly valuable in cell culture facilities where researchers spend extended periods working at the cabinet. Proper working height, combined with the sloped-front cabinet design and armrests, can help create a more comfortable workstation.

How much weight can the Thermo 1385 work area support?

Thermo specifies a maximum load of approximately 55 lb on an individual work-surface section and 110 lb across the overall working area for the 4-foot 1300 Series A2 platform.

This is sufficient for typical culture vessels, racks, pipettes, and small laboratory equipment.

Heavy instruments should not be placed inside the cabinet without considering their weight, dimensions, heat output, and potential effect on airflow.

How loud is the Thermo 1385 during operation?

Thermo specifies an operating noise level of approximately 63 dB(A), ±2 dB, for its 4-foot 1300 Series models with a 10-inch working opening.

Actual perceived noise will also depend on cabinet condition, laboratory acoustics, surrounding equipment, and installation.

Are new HEPA filters installed in this refurbished Thermo 1385?

Unless otherwise specified, American Instrument Exchange installs new HEPA filters before shipment.

The cabinet is also inspected, cleaned, refurbished, and functionally tested prior to delivery.

After installation at the customer's laboratory, the cabinet should be field certified before being placed into biological service.

Does the Thermo 1385 need to be certified after delivery?

Yes. The Thermo 1385 should be field certified after installation and before biological use.

Thermo's operating instructions call for installation and certification testing before initial operation and repeat testing at least annually, after repairs that could affect cabinet performance, and after relocation.

Field certification evaluates the cabinet under the actual conditions where it will be used.

Can AIE Laboratory Services certify a Thermo 1385?

Yes. For laboratories throughout Greater Boston and New England, AIE Laboratory Services provides biosafety cabinet certification, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, HEPA filter replacement, decontamination, and related services.

The cabinet does not need to have originally been purchased from American Instrument Exchange for AIE Laboratory Services to evaluate or service it.

I already own a Thermo 1385. Is it worth repairing?

In many cases, yes.

Problems involving airflow sensors, calibration, blowers, controls, alarms, sash components, lighting, UV components, or HEPA filters do not necessarily mean the entire biosafety cabinet needs to be replaced.

Because the Thermo 1300 Series was widely installed, an existing 1385 may still have considerable useful service life if the cabinet is structurally sound and can be repaired and successfully certified.

For laboratories throughout New England, AIE Laboratory Services can evaluate an existing Thermo 1385 and help determine whether repair or replacement is the more practical option.

I purchased my Thermo 1385 somewhere else. Can AIE Laboratory Services still service it?

Yes. A biosafety cabinet does not need to have been purchased from American Instrument Exchange for AIE Laboratory Services to certify, troubleshoot, maintain, or repair it.

This can be particularly useful for facilities operating several Thermo 1300 Series cabinets acquired at different times or through different equipment suppliers.

Can American Instrument Exchange help replace an older Thermo 1385?

Yes. If an existing Thermo 1385 has reached the point where replacement is more practical than repair, American Instrument Exchange can help identify available refurbished BSCs with similar dimensions and operating characteristics.

An exact 1385 may not always be available, but the Thermo 1300 Series includes several closely related 4-foot models.

Important differences such as 8-inch versus 10-inch working openings, SmartCoat versus stainless steel interiors, electrical configuration, stand type, UV light, and included accessories should be considered when selecting a replacement.

Can American Instrument Exchange supply multiple matching 4-foot Thermo biosafety cabinets?

Depending on current inventory, yes. American Instrument Exchange frequently works with laboratories outfitting new spaces, expanding cell culture operations, or replacing multiple older BSCs.

When several identical Thermo 1385 cabinets are not available, we may be able to identify closely related 4-foot Thermo 1300 Series cabinets with compatible dimensions and operating characteristics.

Our repair and refurbishment protocol ensures each cabinet provides dependable protection for personnel, products, and the environment—delivering maximum safety at a fraction of the cost of new.

Warranty Information

All used equipment sold by American Instrument Exchange is refurbished/reconditioned, tested to meet specifications, cleaned, and comes with a 90-day warranty from the date of shipment unless otherwise specified. New products include a warranty from the manufacturer. Your warranty is only valid if you have paid your invoice. If your invoice is over 30 days old, warranty work will not be performed until your invoice is paid in full.  American Instrument Exchange is not liable for any special or consequential damages that result from the use of, or the inability to use, the materials on this site or the performance of the products,

Exceptions include international sales and items that are agreed to be sold with a lesser warranty or items that are agreed to be sold “as is.”

Should there be visible shipping damage to packaging or concealed shipping damage to item(s) supplied, buyer must communicate such damage to the delivering entity or carrier upon receipt first and to American Instrument the same day item is accepted / signed for. Failure to do so voids warranty. Customer decision to involve / procure third party or OEM service other than American Instrument or AIE assigned vendors to resolve in-warranty instrument failure or defect without first placing a service call to American Instrument voids warranty.

Return & Cancellation Policy

American Instrument Exchange will authorize the return of and issue a full refund for any equipment that is not working as represented and could not be replaced or repaired to the customer’s satisfaction by AIE or a representative of AIE during the warranty period. Returns without prior authorization and an RMA number will not be accepted.

Customers are responsible for proper packaging of the equipment and all included accessories. American Instrument will pay for insurance and shipping costs. Non-inventory items bought specifically to fill customer orders may possibly be returned, but on a case by case basis.

Customers who cancel orders after refurbishing has begun or after delivery where there are no equipment performance issues may be subject to a Restocking/Cancellation Fee of 20% or more and responsible for shipping costs for both the delivery and return.

American Instrument Exchange is able to provide additional repair and support services outside the warranty terms for most products that sell.
