Baker EdgeGARD EG6320 6-Foot Horizontal Laminar Flow Clean Bench

The Baker EdgeGARD EG6320 Clean Bench is a large, 6-foot horizontal laminar flow workstation designed to provide a clean, particle-controlled environment for non-hazardous laboratory, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, electronics, food-processing, and research applications. With a generous 70.5-inch-wide work area, approximately 34 inches of interior working height, HEPA-filtered horizontal airflow, and ISO Class 5 cleanliness, the EG6320 provides substantially more usable vertical clearance than many conventional laminar flow clean benches.

The Baker EdgeGARD system draws room air through a prefilter before passing it through a high-efficiency HEPA filter. Clean air then moves horizontally across the work surface at approximately 100 feet per minute, continuously sweeping airborne particulate away from materials located within the work zone.

This airflow configuration is designed specifically for product protection. It helps protect samples, components, media, instruments, and other non-hazardous materials from environmental particulate contamination.

The Baker EdgeGARD EG6320 is not a biosafety cabinet and does not provide protection for the operator or surrounding laboratory environment. It should therefore be used only with non-hazardous materials where clean, particle-free conditions are required.

This used and reconditioned Baker EdgeGARD EG6320 clean bench from American Instrument Exchange is cleaned, inspected, and tested prior to shipment. A HEPA filter is included, and the unit includes a 90-day warranty from American Instrument Exchange.

Baker EdgeGARD EG6320 Overview

The Baker EdgeGARD EG6320 is part of Baker's long-established family of horizontal laminar flow clean benches.

Its primary purpose is straightforward: create a work area in which products and materials are continuously exposed to HEPA-filtered, particle-controlled air.

Room air enters through the lower front and side intake areas of the cabinet. A prefilter captures larger airborne particles before the air reaches the main HEPA filtration system.

The blower then moves filtered air through the HEPA supply filter and horizontally across the work area toward the operator.

This horizontal laminar airflow helps maintain a clean work zone by continuously flushing airborne particulate contaminants away from the materials being handled.

Because that air ultimately exits through the open front of the cabinet toward the operator, the EG6320 should never be used as a containment device.

Common Applications

The Baker EdgeGARD EG6320 is well suited for media preparation, sterile component assembly, pharmaceutical compounding involving non-hazardous materials, plant tissue culture, electronics assembly, optical component handling, medical-device assembly, food and beverage quality-control work, clean manufacturing, sample preparation, and other procedures where protection from airborne particulate contamination is important.

Its large 6-foot width and additional vertical clearance make it particularly useful for applications involving larger equipment, tall vessels, fixtures, trays, assemblies, or instrumentation that may not comfortably fit inside a shorter clean bench.

Ideal Laboratory & Manufacturing Environments

The Baker EG6320 is an excellent clean bench for pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, biotechnology laboratories, university research groups, electronics manufacturers, aerospace companies, medical-device manufacturers, food-processing laboratories, optical laboratories, hospitals, clean manufacturing operations, and industrial research facilities.

It is particularly well suited for facilities that require a large ISO Class 5 horizontal clean workspace without the containment requirements of a biosafety cabinet.

ISO Class 5 Clean Air Environment

The Baker EdgeGARD EG6320 is designed to provide an ISO Class 5 clean work area, historically referred to as Class 100 cleanliness under earlier Federal Standard terminology.

This level of air cleanliness is achieved by continuously supplying HEPA-filtered air across the work surface.

Maintaining a low concentration of airborne particles can be particularly important when handling:

  • Sterile components

  • Clean assemblies

  • Sensitive electronics

  • Optical parts

  • Pharmaceutical materials

  • Culture media

  • Plant tissue cultures

  • Precision instruments

The EG6320 effectively creates a localized clean-air environment without requiring an entire laboratory room to be maintained at the same cleanliness level.

Horizontal Laminar Airflow

The EG6320 uses horizontal laminar airflow.

HEPA-filtered air enters the rear of the work area and moves horizontally across the work surface toward the open front of the cabinet.

The objective is to create a consistent stream of particle-filtered air moving across the materials being handled.

When the work area is properly arranged, this airflow helps prevent room contaminants from settling onto products downstream of the HEPA filter.

Horizontal airflow is especially useful when direct product protection is the primary concern and personnel containment is not required.

Approximately 100 FPM Airflow

Baker designed the EdgeGARD system to deliver filtered air across the work surface at an average velocity of approximately 100 feet per minute.

Maintaining appropriate airflow velocity helps establish a continuous unidirectional flow pattern through the work zone.

Too little airflow can make the clean area more vulnerable to room-air contamination, while excessive turbulence can disrupt the intended laminar flow pattern.

For this reason, proper blower operation, filter condition, and airflow verification are important elements of clean-bench performance.

HEPA-Filtered Supply Air

The Baker EG6320 uses a HEPA supply filter rated at approximately 99.99% efficiency for particles 0.3 micron in size.

The HEPA filter provides the final stage of filtration before air enters the clean work area.

A washable prefilter captures larger dust and debris upstream of the HEPA filter, helping reduce loading on the primary filter and extend its useful service life.

American Instrument Exchange supplies this EG6320 with a HEPA filter and evaluates filtration performance as part of the refurbishment and testing process.

Product Protection, Not Personnel Protection

One of the most important considerations when purchasing a Baker EdgeGARD EG6320 is understanding what the cabinet is designed to protect.

The EG6320 provides:

Product protection — YES

It does not provide:

Personnel protection — NO

Environmental protection — NO

Because filtered air flows horizontally through the work zone and exits directly toward the operator, any aerosols generated within the work area can also travel toward the operator.

The cabinet should therefore be used only for non-hazardous materials.

Clean Bench vs. Biosafety Cabinet

A horizontal laminar flow clean bench and a Class II biosafety cabinet can look superficially similar, but their intended applications are fundamentally different.

The Baker EG6320 is designed to protect the product from contamination.

A Class II biosafety cabinet is designed to protect:

  • The product

  • The operator

  • The surrounding environment

by controlling both inward and downward airflow and filtering exhaust air.

If a procedure involves microorganisms, infectious materials, potentially hazardous aerosols, human-derived materials requiring biological containment, or other biohazardous substances, an appropriate biosafety cabinet should be used instead of an EdgeGARD clean bench.

Clean Bench vs. Chemical Fume Hood

The EG6320 should also not be confused with a chemical fume hood.

A chemical fume hood draws room air away from the operator and exhausts hazardous chemical vapors through a building exhaust system.

The EdgeGARD does the opposite: it pushes filtered air toward the operator.

For this reason, the EG6320 should not be used with:

  • Hazardous volatile chemicals

  • Toxic vapors

  • Flammable vapor-producing procedures

  • Harmful solvents

  • Corrosive aerosols

  • Radioactive aerosols

Applications involving hazardous chemicals should be conducted in equipment specifically designed for chemical containment.

Extra-Tall EG6320 Work Area

One of the features that differentiates the EG6320 from several other EdgeGARD models is its approximately 34-inch interior working height.

This provides roughly six additional inches of vertical clearance compared with the shorter EG6252 configuration.

That extra height can be extremely useful when the work area must accommodate:

  • Tall laboratory vessels

  • Dispensing equipment

  • Small benchtop instruments

  • Product assemblies

  • Packaging fixtures

  • Large trays

  • Electronics assemblies

  • Manufacturing tooling

Laboratories that have struggled with the vertical limitations of conventional clean benches may find the EG6320 particularly attractive.

Large 6-Foot Work Area

The EG6320 provides approximately 70.5 inches of usable interior width, making it a true six-foot-class clean bench.

This large workspace can support several operators' materials, larger assemblies, multiple pieces of equipment, or complex workflows that would be difficult to conduct inside a 3-foot or 4-foot clean bench.

The additional width can also help laboratories organize work so that clean materials remain upstream of potentially contaminated objects.

Work Surface Organization

Correct work-area organization is essential for maintaining laminar airflow performance.

Materials should be arranged so that clean air from the rear HEPA filter can move toward the front of the cabinet without unnecessary obstruction.

Large objects should not completely block airflow to downstream materials.

Whenever possible:

Clean items should remain upstream.

Hands and tools should not repeatedly move over sterile materials.

Waste and used materials should be positioned downstream from critical products.

Equipment should be arranged to minimize turbulence.

Careful workflow design helps preserve the clean-air conditions the EdgeGARD is intended to provide.

Pharmaceutical & Media Preparation

Horizontal laminar flow clean benches have historically been used for preparation and handling of non-hazardous pharmaceutical materials where product cleanliness is important.

The EG6320's large work surface can be useful for:

Media preparation
Sterile component handling
Packaging operations
Clean assembly
Non-hazardous product preparation
Laboratory reagent handling

Application suitability should always be determined according to current facility procedures, regulatory requirements, and risk assessment.

Plant Tissue Culture

Plant tissue culture requires a clean workspace because fungal spores, bacteria, and environmental contaminants can rapidly compromise culture vessels.

The EG6320 provides a large HEPA-filtered work zone where personnel can perform:

  • Explant preparation

  • Media transfers

  • Culture vessel manipulation

  • Plant propagation procedures

  • Sterile tool handling

Its generous vertical clearance can also accommodate taller culture vessels and supporting equipment.

Electronics & Precision Manufacturing

Clean benches are widely used outside traditional biological laboratories.

Electronic components, sensors, optical assemblies, aerospace components, medical devices, and other precision products can be affected by dust and airborne particulate contamination.

The Baker EG6320 provides a localized ISO Class 5 workspace that can help manufacturers protect sensitive components without maintaining an entire production room at the same cleanliness level.

Food Processing & Quality-Control Applications

The EdgeGARD can also be useful in food science and quality-control laboratories for appropriate non-hazardous clean handling and sample preparation procedures.

Potential uses include:

Clean sample setup
Packaging-related testing
Sterile media preparation
Quality-control procedures
Product-development work

The clean bench should not be used where the materials being handled present an aerosol or biological hazard to the operator.

Brightly Illuminated Work Surface

Baker EdgeGARD console models were designed to provide high illumination across the work surface.

Good lighting is particularly important for precision assembly, pharmaceutical processing, microbiological preparation, electronics work, and visual inspection.

The large open front also provides unobstructed access to the work area compared with cabinets incorporating restricted sash openings.

Baker EG6320 vs. EG6252

The Baker EG6320 and EG6252 are both approximately six feet wide and provide similar horizontal laminar-flow product protection.

The principal distinction is vertical working height.

The EG6320 provides approximately:

34 inches of interior height

The EG6252 provides approximately:

28 inches of interior height

The EG6320 therefore provides roughly six additional inches of vertical clearance.

Choose the EG6320 when tall equipment, vessels, assemblies, fixtures, or products must be positioned inside the clean work zone.

Choose the EG6252 when standard working height is sufficient and overall cabinet size needs to be minimized.

EG6320 vs. Smaller 4-Foot Clean Benches

A 4-foot horizontal clean bench may provide enough room for routine media preparation or small-component work.

The EG6320 offers significantly greater work surface area.

A 6-foot model may be preferable when:

  • Multiple procedures occur simultaneously

  • Large assemblies are handled

  • Larger equipment must be placed inside the cabinet

  • Additional clean staging space is required

  • Production workflows require greater throughput

The tradeoff is greater floor-space, electrical, and shipping requirements.

Clean Bench Testing by American Instrument Exchange

American Instrument Exchange inspects and tests used clean benches before shipment.

For a Baker EdgeGARD EG6320, evaluation may include:

  • Blower motor operation

  • Control operation

  • Lighting

  • Electrical components

  • HEPA filter condition

  • Airflow performance

  • Overall cabinet condition

  • Work surface condition

  • Prefilter condition

  • General mechanical integrity

The cabinet is also cleaned and prepared for laboratory use before shipment.

American Instrument Exchange supplies filters for its refurbished clean benches and evaluates the installed HEPA filtration system as part of preparing the unit for resale.

HEPA Filter Evaluation

HEPA filter condition is critical to the performance of any laminar flow clean bench.

A compromised filter or filter seal can allow unfiltered air to enter the work area.

American Instrument Exchange evaluates clean-bench filtration during refurbishment and can replace filters when required.

After installation, periodic HEPA filter integrity testing and airflow verification are recommended to ensure the bench continues to provide the expected clean-air performance.
