Overview

The Thermo Revco REC4504A was designed for laboratories that need more than conventional refrigerated sample storage. Chromatography procedures frequently require columns, collection vessels, tubing, buffers, and other components to remain under controlled refrigerated conditions throughout a separation or purification process. The REC4504A provides a large temperature-controlled workspace specifically suited to these requirements.

Its 45.8 cu. ft. chamber provides enough space for substantial chromatography setups while retaining shelving for reagents, samples, buffers, and related materials. Four adjustable epoxy-coated open-wire shelves allow the interior to be reconfigured according to the needs of the laboratory.

Two 2-inch diameter access ports with hinged covers allow tubing, cables, probes, and other connections to pass between equipment inside and outside the refrigerated chamber. This provides a cleaner and more practical installation than routing connections through the door opening and helps maintain the integrity of the refrigerated environment.

The REC4504A also uses double sliding glass doors, allowing researchers to observe chromatography equipment, collection vessels, and stored materials without opening the refrigerator. When physical access is required, users can open only the necessary portion of the cabinet rather than exposing the entire chamber to ambient laboratory conditions.

For laboratories performing chromatography regularly, these features make the REC4504A considerably more functional than a conventional glass-door laboratory refrigerator.

Common Applications

The Thermo Revco REC4504A is well suited for protein purification, column chromatography, refrigerated fraction collection, chromatography system operation, buffer and reagent storage, sample preparation, and other temperature-sensitive research procedures.

The large refrigerated chamber can accommodate chromatography columns, fraction collectors, collection vessels, tubing assemblies, and related components while maintaining the controlled environment required for temperature-sensitive samples.

Outside of active chromatography procedures, the REC4504A can also serve as a high-capacity laboratory refrigerator for proteins, enzymes, reagents, buffers, media, standards, controls, biological samples, and other materials requiring storage between 1°C and 8°C.

Ideal Laboratory Types

The Thermo Revco REC4504A is particularly well suited for biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical research laboratories, protein purification facilities, academic research laboratories, biochemistry laboratories, analytical laboratories, life science facilities, and industrial R&D environments.

Its 45.8 cu. ft. capacity makes it especially useful for laboratories with larger chromatography setups, substantial reagent inventories, or multiple researchers sharing refrigerated equipment.

The combination of a large chamber and adjustable shelving also gives laboratories flexibility to transition between active chromatography workflows and routine refrigerated storage as research requirements change.

Performance & Temperature Uniformity

The REC4504A provides an adjustable 1°C to 8°C operating range and is factory configured around a 4°C setpoint, making it suitable for many common laboratory refrigeration and chromatography applications.

A positive forced-air circulation system distributes conditioned air throughout the chamber to promote temperature uniformity across shelf levels. This is particularly important in a large-capacity refrigerator, where temperature stratification can otherwise create meaningful differences between storage locations.

The microprocessor control system provides digital temperature monitoring and incorporates audible and visual warnings for temperature deviations and power failures. Factory alarm thresholds are designed to alert users when cabinet temperatures move substantially above or below the normal operating setpoint.

A controller battery backup system helps maintain alarm functionality during power interruptions.

The refrigerator also uses a demand-based defrost system. Rather than relying solely on a fixed defrost timer, the system initiates defrost as required, helping minimize frost buildup while maintaining evaporator coil efficiency.

Sample Storage Recommendations

For routine refrigerated storage, samples, reagents, and containers should be positioned to permit adequate airflow throughout the cabinet. The REC4504A's open-wire shelving supports air circulation, but excessive loading or blocking interior air passages can still affect temperature distribution.

When using the refrigerator for chromatography, adequate space should be maintained around columns, collection vessels, fraction collectors, tubing, and other components. Avoid configuring equipment in a way that obstructs major airflow paths.

The two 2-inch access ports should be used whenever practical for tubing, cables, monitoring probes, or other external connections rather than routing these components through the door opening.

For critical samples, high-value biological materials, or regulated applications, an independent temperature monitoring or data-logging system should be considered in addition to the refrigerator's onboard temperature controls and alarms.

Energy Efficiency & Operating Costs

The Thermo Revco REC4504A was engineered as a high-performance scientific refrigerator, with refrigeration components selected to support demanding laboratory use and frequent access.

Its demand-based defrost system helps limit unnecessary defrost cycles by initiating defrost according to system conditions rather than relying exclusively on fixed intervals. This approach helps control frost accumulation while maintaining evaporator coil performance.

The sliding glass doors can also reduce unnecessary temperature recovery by allowing users to identify samples and monitor chromatography processes before opening the refrigerator. When access is necessary, only a portion of the cabinet needs to be opened.

As an older-generation high-performance laboratory refrigerator, the REC4504A should not be expected to match the energy consumption of the newest high-efficiency laboratory refrigeration platforms. For laboratories prioritizing capacity, chromatography functionality, and acquisition cost, however, a properly operating refurbished REC4504A can represent a practical alternative to purchasing a new large-capacity chromatography refrigerator.

Actual energy consumption will depend on laboratory temperature, refrigerator setpoint, sample loading, frequency of door openings, and operating conditions.

Refurbishment & Testing

American Instrument Exchange technicians inspect, clean, test, and recondition used Thermo Revco chromatography refrigerators prior to shipment.

Temperature performance is verified using a calibrated digital data logger to confirm the accuracy of the refrigerator's controls and temperature readout. The refrigeration system, compressor operation, microprocessor controls, alarms, door hardware, gaskets, shelving, access ports, and other major components are inspected for condition and proper operation.

Hardware and components are repaired or replaced as necessary during the refurbishment process, and each refrigerator is thoroughly cleaned prior to shipment.

This Thermo Revco REC4504A includes a 90-day warranty from American Instrument Exchange.

Shipping & Installation

The REC4504A is a large, heavy laboratory refrigerator with exterior dimensions of approximately 56.5"W × 34.5"D × 79.1"H and a shipping weight of approximately 670 lbs.

Laboratories should confirm that loading docks, elevators, corridors, doorways, and other access points can accommodate the refrigerator before delivery. Because of its width and weight, appropriate material-handling equipment should be available for unloading and final placement.

The refrigerator should be installed on a level surface with adequate ventilation clearance and connected to an appropriate 115V, 60 Hz electrical supply with a NEMA 5-15 receptacle.

After installation, allow the refrigerator to reach and stabilize at the desired operating temperature before loading temperature-sensitive materials or beginning chromatography procedures.
