VACUUBRAND MZ 2C NT +AK+EK Overview

The VACUUBRAND MZ 2C NT +AK+EK is designed for laboratory processes where chemical resistance and solvent recovery are both important.

At the center of the system is the MZ 2C NT, a two-stage chemistry diaphragm pump capable of reaching an ultimate vacuum of 7 mbar. This provides substantially deeper vacuum than general-purpose filtration pumps and makes the system suitable for evaporation, concentration, drying, and other processes involving reduced pressure.

The +AK+EK configuration adds two important components.

On the inlet side, the protective-coated glass AK separator captures particles and liquid droplets before they enter the pump. This provides an additional layer of protection during processes such as rotary evaporation, where foaming or bumping can potentially carry liquid into the vacuum line.

On the exhaust side, the EK waste-vapor condenser captures solvent vapor after it passes through the pump. This compact condenser is designed for efficient solvent recovery, reducing the quantity of vapor released from the vacuum system.

Together, these features make the MZ 2C NT +AK+EK particularly well suited for solvent-processing applications where protecting the pump and recovering solvent are both priorities.

Energy Efficiency & Operating Costs

The MZ 2C NT +AK+EK uses a 180-watt motor and completely oil-free diaphragm pumping mechanism. Unlike an oil-sealed rotary vane pump, there is no vacuum pump oil to purchase, monitor, change, or dispose of.

Oil-free operation is particularly valuable when processing solvents because solvent vapors cannot contaminate a pump-oil reservoir. It also eliminates oil mist and the possibility of oil backstreaming into connected laboratory equipment.

The integrated EK condenser provides another potential operating benefit by recovering solvent vapor that would otherwise leave the pump exhaust. Depending on the process and purity requirements, recovered solvent may be suitable for recycling or can be collected for controlled disposal.

The AK separator can further contribute to pump longevity by helping prevent accidental liquid carryover from reaching the pump heads.

Common Applications

The VACUUBRAND MZ 2C NT +AK+EK is particularly well suited for rotary evaporation, vacuum concentration, vacuum drying ovens, solvent evaporation, evacuation, degassing, and pumping gases and chemical vapors.

VACUUBRAND specifically identifies rotary evaporators, vacuum concentrators, and vacuum drying ovens as typical applications for this configuration.

The combination of 7 mbar ultimate vacuum, chemical resistance, inlet liquid protection, and exhaust-side solvent recovery makes this a versatile vacuum system for laboratories regularly working with volatile solvents.

Ideal Laboratory Types

The MZ 2C NT +AK+EK is an excellent choice for pharmaceutical research laboratories, biotechnology companies, medicinal chemistry groups, organic chemistry laboratories, analytical laboratories, university research facilities, contract research organizations, process-development laboratories, quality-control facilities, and industrial R&D departments.

It is especially useful in laboratories where vacuum pumps routinely encounter solvent vapor and where reducing solvent discharge from the pump exhaust is desirable.

High-Efficiency EK Waste-Vapor Condenser

The EK exhaust condenser is the defining feature of this MZ 2C NT configuration.

Solvent vapor drawn from an evaporation or drying process travels through the vacuum pump. Rather than simply discharging that vapor through the pump exhaust, the EK condenser cools the exhaust stream so that solvent vapor can condense and be collected.

This provides several potential benefits:

  • Improved solvent recovery

  • Reduced solvent emissions

  • Controlled collection of condensed solvent

  • Potential solvent recycling where appropriate

  • Reduced vapor load on laboratory exhaust systems

  • Improved environmental performance of solvent-processing workflows

VACUUBRAND describes the EK as a highly efficient, compact waste-vapor condenser designed to enable very high levels of solvent recovery.

Protective AK Inlet Separator

While the EK condenser protects the exhaust side of the process, the AK inlet separator helps protect the vacuum pump itself.

The separator is constructed from protective-coated glass and is designed to capture liquid droplets and particles before they enter the pump.

This is particularly useful during evaporation. If a sample bumps or foams, liquid can potentially be carried into the vacuum line. The AK separator provides a physical collection point before that liquid reaches the diaphragm heads.

Reducing liquid carryover can help minimize pump contamination, protect chemically resistant components, and extend equipment life.

MZ 2C NT +AK+EK for Rotary Evaporators

The MZ 2C NT +AK+EK is particularly well suited as a chemistry vacuum pump for rotary evaporators.

Rotary evaporation requires sufficient vacuum to reduce solvent boiling temperature while maintaining stable evaporation conditions. The MZ 2C NT reaches 7 mbar, providing useful vacuum performance for many common laboratory solvents.

The AK separator helps protect the pump if liquid is carried over from the evaporator, while the EK exhaust condenser provides an additional solvent-recovery stage after vapor passes through the pump.

This combination creates a practical vacuum solution for laboratories that want oil-free rotary evaporation with integrated solvent recovery but do not require automatic electronic vacuum control.

MZ 2C NT +AK+EK for Vacuum Concentrators

VACUUBRAND also identifies vacuum concentrators as a typical application for this system.

Vacuum concentrators remove solvent from samples under reduced pressure, frequently producing substantial vapor loads during operation. A chemistry-resistant diaphragm pump eliminates the oil contamination issues that can occur when solvent vapor enters a rotary vane pump.

The EK condenser provides additional value by capturing solvent from the exhaust stream, while the AK separator protects against accidental liquid aspiration.

MZ 2C NT +AK+EK for Vacuum Drying Ovens

The MZ 2C NT +AK+EK can also serve as a vacuum pump for compatible laboratory vacuum drying ovens.

Vacuum ovens are commonly used to remove moisture, residual solvents, and other volatile materials at reduced pressure. When solvent vapor is present, chemical resistance and exhaust management become particularly important.

The MZ 2C NT provides oil-free chemical vacuum while the EK condenser helps capture condensable vapor leaving the pump.

Actual suitability should always be evaluated against the oven manufacturer's required pumping speed, target pressure, chamber volume, vapor load, and materials being processed.

Chemical Resistance & Vapor Tolerance

The MZ 2C NT is designed specifically as a chemistry diaphragm vacuum pump.

Wetted components are selected to provide strong resistance to many chemicals and solvents commonly encountered in research and process laboratories. The diaphragm design also hermetically separates the pumping chamber from the drive mechanism.

This makes the MZ 2C NT platform especially useful for processes where chemical vapors would quickly contaminate the oil in a conventional rotary vane vacuum pump.

Chemical compatibility should always be verified for the specific substances, concentrations, temperatures, and process conditions involved.

Gas Ballast & Condensable Vapor Handling

The MZ 2C NT +AK+EK reaches approximately 7 mbar / 5 Torr without gas ballast and 12 mbar / 9 Torr with gas ballast.

Gas ballast can improve the pump's ability to handle condensable vapors by helping purge condensate from the pumping system.

This capability is especially useful during evaporation, vacuum drying, and concentration processes where water vapor or solvent vapor may be present continuously.

MZ 2C NT +AK+EK vs. MZ 2C NT +2AK

Both systems use the same basic two-stage MZ 2C NT chemistry diaphragm pump and provide approximately the same ultimate vacuum, but the outlet-side equipment differs significantly.

The MZ 2C NT +2AK uses separators at both the inlet and outlet. Its outlet separator collects condensate and helps prevent condensate backflow toward the pump.

The MZ 2C NT +AK+EK replaces that basic outlet separator with a high-efficiency waste-vapor condenser designed for active solvent recovery.

For general vacuum concentration, gel drying, or processes where simple condensate collection is sufficient, the +2AK configuration may be appropriate.

For rotary evaporation, vacuum drying, and solvent-processing applications where maximizing solvent recovery and reducing emissions are priorities, the +AK+EK configuration provides a significant advantage.

MZ 2C NT +AK+EK vs. MZ 2C NT +AK+M+D

These two MZ 2C NT configurations are optimized for different workflows.

The +AK+M+D configuration combines an inlet separator with a manual flow-control valve and analog vacuum manometer. It is particularly useful for filtration, solid-phase extraction, and other applications where the operator wants direct manual vacuum adjustment.

The +AK+EK configuration emphasizes solvent handling and recovery. Instead of the manual valve and manometer, it adds a high-efficiency exhaust condenser.

For filtration and manual vacuum control, the +AK+M+D is the stronger choice. For evaporation, concentration, vacuum drying, and solvent recovery, the +AK+EK configuration is generally the better fit.

MZ 2C NT +AK+EK vs. MZ 2C VARIO Select

The MZ 2C VARIO Select and MZ 2C NT +AK+EK both use oil-free chemistry diaphragm technology and reach approximately 7 mbar, but they solve different problems.

The MZ 2C VARIO Select emphasizes automatic process control. Its VACUU·SELECT controller and variable-speed motor can automatically regulate vacuum during solvent evaporation.

The MZ 2C NT +AK+EK emphasizes solvent recovery, combining a fixed-speed MZ 2C NT pump with an inlet separator and exhaust condenser.

A laboratory primarily concerned with automated rotary evaporation may prefer the VARIO Select. A laboratory that prioritizes straightforward operation and efficient exhaust-side solvent recovery may prefer the +AK+EK.

MZ 2C NT +AK+EK vs. PC 3001 VARIO Select TE

The PC 3001 VARIO Select TE represents a more advanced solution for demanding evaporation processes.

The MZ 2C NT +AK+EK reaches 7 mbar and provides fixed-speed chemical vacuum with an AK inlet separator and EK exhaust condenser.

The PC 3001 VARIO Select TE reaches approximately 2 mbar and adds automatic VACUU·SELECT process control, variable-speed operation, and a dry-ice exhaust condenser.

For many routine rotary evaporation, concentration, and vacuum drying workflows, the MZ 2C NT +AK+EK provides an effective and comparatively straightforward solution. Laboratories requiring deeper vacuum, automatic boiling-pressure control, or work with more challenging high-boiling solvents may benefit from the PC 3001 VARIO Select TE.
