Refurbished Labconco Protector ClassMate 6' Laboratory Chemical Fume Hood

The Labconco Protector ClassMate 6' laboratory chemical fume hood is designed specifically for instructional laboratories where chemical containment, workspace visibility, and student supervision are equally important. Available used and refurbished from American Instrument Exchange, this full-size ducted fume hood provides a spacious work area for chemistry experiments, demonstrations, sample preparation, and other procedures involving chemical fumes and vapors.

Unlike conventional chemical fume hoods with opaque side and rear walls, the Protector ClassMate incorporates clear tempered safety glass sides and back. This open visual design allows instructors to observe work inside the hood from multiple angles and makes demonstrations easier for groups of students to follow. The transparent rear panel is particularly useful when multiple hoods are installed back-to-back in an island configuration because visibility through the laboratory is maintained.

This particular 6-foot ClassMate includes an epoxy work surface and vertical-rising sash. With an overall hood enclosure measuring approximately 72" W × 32.7" D × 59" H, it provides substantial working space while remaining suitable for installation on laboratory casework or an appropriate support structure.

Designed for Teaching and Instructional Laboratories

The defining advantage of the Protector ClassMate is visibility. Traditional laboratory fume hoods can make it difficult for an instructor to monitor students or demonstrate procedures because much of the work area is surrounded by opaque materials. The ClassMate addresses this limitation with clear tempered safety glass on the sides and rear of the enclosure along with a tall front viewing area.

This configuration allows instructors to observe chemical handling techniques from different positions within the laboratory while also making demonstrations easier for students to see. In laboratories where multiple hoods are arranged back-to-back on an island, the transparent rear panels help preserve sightlines instead of dividing the room with solid hood walls.

For universities, colleges, high schools, technical schools, and other instructional facilities, these characteristics make the ClassMate particularly well suited to laboratory environments where supervision and visibility are important parts of safe chemical instruction.

Common Applications

The Labconco Protector ClassMate can support a wide variety of general chemistry and laboratory procedures when connected to a properly engineered exhaust system. Typical uses include undergraduate chemistry experiments, organic chemistry instruction, reagent preparation, solvent handling, sample preparation, chemical demonstrations, analytical chemistry procedures, and other educational activities that may generate hazardous fumes or vapors.

Its 6-foot width provides ample room for laboratory glassware, hotplates, stirring equipment, support stands, reaction vessels, and other apparatus commonly used during chemistry instruction. The large workspace can also make it easier for instructors to arrange demonstration equipment where students can clearly observe a procedure.

Vertical Sash and High-Visibility Design

This ClassMate is equipped with a vertical-rising sash. The normal working sash height is 18 inches, while the sash can be raised to a full opening of approximately 28 inches when additional access is required for loading apparatus or servicing the work area.

A tall stationary front viewing panel combines with the clear sides and rear to create excellent visibility into the hood. Tempered safety glass construction provides the durability required for regular laboratory use while maintaining the open appearance that distinguishes the ClassMate from conventional chemical fume hoods.

Labconco also incorporates an ergonomic air foil with Clean-Sweep airflow openings and a three-piece glass baffle designed to promote effective airflow through the enclosure. The baffle pivots to simplify access during cleaning and routine maintenance.

Workspace and Laboratory Layout

This 6-foot ClassMate measures approximately 72" W × 32.7" D × 59" H and includes an epoxy work surface. The chemical-resistant work surface provides a durable platform for routine chemistry procedures and simplifies cleanup following laboratory exercises.

The clear rear panel is particularly valuable when designing instructional laboratories around island-style workstations. Two hoods can be positioned back-to-back without creating the same visual obstruction associated with conventional solid-backed laboratory hoods, helping instructors maintain sightlines across a larger teaching laboratory.

Cord-Keeper slots positioned along the air foil also provide convenient routing for electrical cords used with hotplates, stirrers, meters, and other benchtop laboratory instruments.

Installation and Exhaust Considerations

The Labconco Protector ClassMate is a ducted chemical fume hood designed for connection to a facility exhaust system. A remote blower is not included with this refurbished unit. Because required exhaust volume and static pressure depend on the hood installation, duct configuration, building HVAC system, and distance to the exterior exhaust point, blower selection should be performed as part of the facility's mechanical design.

Before installation, laboratories should verify available exhaust capacity, ductwork configuration, electrical service, hood placement, work-surface and support requirements, and applicable building and laboratory safety requirements.

The hood operates on 100–115 V, 50/60 Hz electrical service and includes pre-wired lighting. Final installation and airflow performance should be evaluated according to the requirements of the laboratory and facility.

Ideal Laboratory Environments

The Protector ClassMate was developed primarily for instructional environments and is an especially strong choice for university and college chemistry departments, high school chemistry laboratories, technical and vocational schools, teaching hospitals, training laboratories, and other facilities where instructors need to supervise chemical procedures.

It can also be useful in research or analytical laboratories where enhanced visibility from the sides or rear of the hood is advantageous.

Refurbishment and Testing

This Labconco Protector ClassMate is inspected and refurbished by American Instrument Exchange before shipment. For chemical fume hoods, our technicians inspect the enclosure and baffles, verify that the interior lighting operates properly, and check the sash, tracks, and counterweight system for smooth operation.

The hood is cleaned and inspected before being prepared for shipment. Because exhaust performance depends on the final ductwork, blower, and building HVAC configuration, final airflow verification should be performed after the hood has been installed at the customer's facility.

Why Buy a Refurbished Chemical Fume Hood from American Instrument Exchange?

Refurbished laboratory fume hoods can provide universities, research facilities, and expanding laboratories with a cost-effective alternative to purchasing new laboratory furniture. This can be particularly valuable when outfitting instructional laboratories that require several hoods, where the cost of purchasing multiple new units can quickly become substantial.

American Instrument Exchange offers used and refurbished chemical fume hoods in a variety of sizes and configurations and can help laboratories identify equipment that fits their available space, intended application, and existing laboratory infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Labconco Protector ClassMate different from a standard chemical fume hood?

The ClassMate was specifically designed for instructional laboratories. Clear tempered-glass sides and back provide greater visibility into the work area, allowing instructors to observe students and making chemistry demonstrations easier for groups to see.

Can ClassMate hoods be installed back-to-back?

The transparent rear panel makes the ClassMate particularly well suited to back-to-back island installations. Unlike a conventional solid-backed hood, the clear rear panel helps maintain visibility across the laboratory when two hoods face opposite directions.

Does this Labconco ClassMate include a work surface?

Yes. This particular refurbished unit includes an epoxy work surface suitable for general laboratory chemical applications.

Does the hood include an exhaust blower?

No. A remote exhaust blower is not included. Blower requirements depend on the facility's ductwork, required airflow, static pressure, and exhaust-system design, so the appropriate blower should be selected for the final installation.

What is the sash opening on this hood?

The vertical-rising sash has an 18-inch normal working height and can be raised to approximately 28 inches for full access to the work area.

Is this hood only suitable for schools?

No. Its design is particularly advantageous for educational laboratories, but the ClassMate can also be used in research, analytical, training, and other laboratory environments where a ducted chemical fume hood with enhanced visibility is desirable.
