For some laboratories, protecting valuable biological samples is more important than maximizing storage capacity. When every degree matters and sample integrity takes priority, many researchers continue to choose chest-style ultralow freezers because they naturally retain cold air during routine access. The Fisher Isotemp 5150 Ultra-Low Temperature Chest Freezer was designed with that philosophy in mind, providing dependable storage from -50°C to -86°C in a compact chest configuration that minimizes temperature disturbance whenever the lid is opened.
With 3 cubic feet (85 liters) of storage capacity, the Fisher Isotemp 5150 is an excellent solution for laboratories requiring dedicated ultra-low storage for high-value samples, research collections, quality control materials, and specialty applications. Its compact footprint makes it particularly well suited for individual laboratories, hospital departments, university research groups, and facilities that need a secondary ultralow freezer close to the point of use.
Laboratories building a complete cold storage workflow often pair compact ultralow freezers with laboratory refrigerators for daily reagent storage, laboratory freezers for intermediate-temperature materials, and larger upright ultralow freezers for high-volume sample archives. The Isotemp 5150 serves a different purpose by providing exceptional thermal stability for smaller collections of critical samples.

Unlike upright freezers, chest ultralow freezers naturally retain cold air when opened because dense cold air remains inside the cabinet rather than spilling onto the laboratory floor. For laboratories retrieving samples throughout the day, this design helps minimize temperature fluctuations and supports rapid recovery following routine access.
The Fisher Isotemp 5150 combines this inherent thermal advantage with a dependable two-stage cascade refrigeration system, microprocessor controls, and comprehensive alarm monitoring. Its compact footprint allows laboratories to dedicate ultra-low storage to individual projects or research groups while maintaining dependable long-term sample preservation.
Many laboratories use the Isotemp 5150 alongside biosafety cabinets, CO₂ incubators, and refrigerated centrifuges, creating an efficient workflow from sample preparation through long-term preservation.
The Fisher Isotemp 5150 is commonly used for storing:
Cell lines
Stem cells
DNA and RNA libraries
Tissue specimens
Plasma and serum
Clinical trial samples
Protein samples
Enzymes
Vaccines
Pharmaceutical compounds
Microbial cultures
Biological reference materials
Its compact capacity makes it an excellent choice for laboratories requiring dedicated storage for a single research project, investigator, or specialty application where frequent sample access and maximum thermal stability are important.
The Isotemp 5150 is well suited for:
Academic research laboratories
Biotechnology companies
Pharmaceutical manufacturers
Hospital laboratories
Clinical research organizations
University research groups
Public health laboratories
Quality control laboratories
Its combination of compact size and chest-style thermal performance makes it especially attractive for laboratories with limited space or specialized storage requirements.
One of the greatest advantages of a chest ultralow freezer is its ability to retain cold air during routine access. Because cold air naturally settles inside the cabinet, opening the lid introduces less temperature disturbance than opening a conventional upright freezer. This design helps reduce unnecessary warming of stored samples while supporting faster recovery after lid openings.
The Fisher Isotemp 5150 combines this natural advantage with dependable cascade refrigeration, insulated cabinet construction, and programmable alarm monitoring to provide consistent long-term storage for valuable biological materials. Laboratories preserving especially sensitive collections frequently complement chest ultralow freezers with cryogenic storage systems for applications requiring liquid nitrogen preservation.

While chest ultralow freezers are often selected for their thermal performance rather than their energy consumption, the cabinet design can reduce temperature loss during routine access, decreasing refrigeration demand following lid openings. Combined with routine preventative maintenance and condenser cleaning, the Isotemp 5150 provides dependable long-term operation for laboratories prioritizing sample protection over storage volume.
Specifications compiled from Fisher Scientific manufacturer literature and American Instrument Exchange product information.
Every Fisher Isotemp 5150 received by American Instrument Exchange undergoes a comprehensive inspection and extended performance evaluation before shipment. Our technicians verify pull-down performance, confirm stable operation throughout the operating temperature range, inspect the cascade refrigeration system and compressors, test alarms and electronic controls, verify digital temperature accuracy, inspect lid seals and insulation, and thoroughly clean the freezer before delivery.
The Fisher Isotemp 5150 ships by freight from American Instrument Exchange. Before delivery, laboratories should verify floor space, electrical service, and adequate ventilation around the cabinet. Because chest freezers require overhead access, laboratories should also ensure sufficient clearance above the unit for comfortable daily operation.
Why choose a chest ultralow freezer instead of an upright model?
Chest freezers naturally retain cold air when the lid is opened, helping minimize temperature fluctuations during routine sample retrieval. Many laboratories choose chest-style ULTs when protecting especially valuable samples or when the freezer will be accessed frequently.
What types of samples are best suited for the Isotemp 5150?
The Isotemp 5150 is commonly used for DNA and RNA libraries, stem cells, cell lines, tissue specimens, vaccines, plasma, serum, protein samples, pharmaceutical compounds, and other biological materials requiring storage as low as -86°C.
Can the Isotemp 5150 connect to external monitoring systems?
Yes. The freezer includes RS-232 and 4–20 mA outputs, allowing connection to independent monitoring and facility management systems for additional sample security.
How is the freezer tested before shipment?
Every refurbished Fisher Isotemp 5150 is inspected, cleaned, and performance tested by American Instrument Exchange technicians to verify pull-down performance, temperature stability, alarm functionality, refrigeration performance, and overall system operation before shipment.
