Not every laboratory requires a large automated cryogenic storage system. For many applications, a compact liquid nitrogen storage dewar provides an economical and dependable solution for preserving valuable biological samples while maintaining the flexibility to transport materials between laboratories or facilities. The International Cryogenics IC-20R Liquid Nitrogen Sample Storage System is designed for exactly that purpose, offering reliable long-term cryogenic storage in a portable, manually filled package.
With a 20-liter liquid nitrogen capacity and an impressive static hold time of approximately 200 days, the IC-20R is well suited for biotechnology companies, IVF laboratories, hospitals, universities, veterinary laboratories, and research facilities that need dependable cryogenic storage without the complexity or infrastructure requirements of a large auto-fill system. Its lightweight design also makes it an excellent choice for transporting biological samples between laboratories or clinical sites.
Many laboratories use the IC-20R alongside biosafety cabinets for sterile sample preparation, controlled-rate freezers for optimized freezing protocols, ultra-low freezers for intermediate storage, and larger cryogenic storage systems for centralized repositories.

Excellent vacuum insulation for reduced nitrogen loss
Suitable for laboratory or transport applications
Refurbished and performance tested by American Instrument Exchange
90-day warranty included
The IC-20R provides laboratories with a straightforward and dependable solution for preserving biological samples at liquid nitrogen temperatures. Unlike large automated cryogenic systems designed for thousands of vials, the IC-20R focuses on portability, long hold time, and ease of operation.
Its vacuum-insulated aluminum construction minimizes heat transfer and helps reduce liquid nitrogen evaporation, allowing samples to remain at cryogenic temperatures for extended periods between fills. Because the unit does not require electrical power or automated filling equipment, it is particularly attractive for laboratories that need flexible cryogenic storage, field transport, or backup storage capacity.
The International Cryogenics IC-20R is commonly used for storing:
Cell lines
Stem cells
Embryos
Oocytes
Sperm samples
Cord blood samples
Tissue specimens
DNA samples
Clinical research materials
Veterinary reproductive samples
Biological reference materials
Its portable design also makes it well suited for transporting cryopreserved specimens between laboratory locations.
The IC-20R is an excellent choice for:
Biotechnology companies
IVF laboratories
Fertility clinics
Veterinary reproductive facilities
Universities
Research laboratories
Hospitals
Clinical laboratories
Small biobanks
Laboratories requiring dependable cryogenic storage without investing in a large automated liquid nitrogen storage system will appreciate the IC-20R's simplicity and long holding time.
Portable cryogenic storage systems fill an important niche between mechanical ultra-low freezers and large auto-fill liquid nitrogen tanks. They provide true cryogenic temperatures while remaining compact, portable, and independent of electrical power.
For laboratories transporting valuable biological materials or maintaining smaller cryogenic inventories, a manually filled storage dewar like the IC-20R can offer excellent performance with minimal operating complexity.
The IC-20R is commonly used to preserve stem cells, embryos, sperm samples, oocytes, cell lines, tissue specimens, veterinary reproductive materials, DNA samples, and other biological materials requiring storage at liquid nitrogen temperatures.

Because the IC-20R does not use compressors or electrical refrigeration, operating costs are primarily determined by liquid nitrogen consumption. Its vacuum-insulated construction minimizes evaporation during storage, helping maximize hold time between fills. Laboratories should routinely inspect the vessel for physical damage, maintain clean neck components, and monitor liquid nitrogen levels according to established laboratory procedures.
Specifications compiled from International Cryogenics manufacturer literature and American Instrument Exchange product information.
Every International Cryogenics IC-20R received by American Instrument Exchange undergoes a comprehensive inspection before shipment. Our technicians inspect the vacuum vessel, neck assembly, dispensing components, and overall condition before filling the dewar with liquid nitrogen and monitoring evaporation performance to verify proper vacuum integrity. Each unit is thoroughly cleaned prior to shipment, ensuring dependable performance upon arrival.
Laboratories building complete cryopreservation facilities frequently purchase biosafety cabinets, controlled-rate freezers, ultra-low freezers, laboratory refrigerators, and centrifuges from American Instrument Exchange.
The International Cryogenics IC-20R ships from American Instrument Exchange after inspection and testing. Before placing the unit into service, laboratories should establish appropriate liquid nitrogen handling procedures, provide suitable personal protective equipment, and verify that storage and transport practices comply with institutional safety requirements. Because the unit is manually filled, laboratories should also plan for regular liquid nitrogen replenishment based on sample load and usage patterns.
What is the advantage of the IC-20R over a mechanical ultra-low freezer?
The IC-20R stores samples at liquid nitrogen temperatures, providing substantially colder storage than mechanical -86°C freezers. This makes it well suited for long-term preservation of highly sensitive biological materials.
How long will the IC-20R hold liquid nitrogen?
Under static conditions, the IC-20R offers an approximate 200-day static hold time, although actual performance depends on usage, environmental conditions, and how frequently the unit is opened.
Does the IC-20R require electricity?
No. The IC-20R is a manually filled liquid nitrogen storage dewar and operates without electrical power.
How is the IC-20R tested before shipment?
Every refurbished International Cryogenics IC-20R is inspected, cleaned, filled with liquid nitrogen, and monitored by American Instrument Exchange technicians to verify proper vacuum performance and acceptable evaporation rates before shipment.
