The JULABO FL1701 is a refrigerated recirculating chiller designed primarily to remove heat from compatible external laboratory and process equipment.
Temperature-controlled fluid is pumped from the FL1701 through the connected equipment, where it absorbs process heat. The warmed coolant returns to the chiller, where the integrated refrigeration system removes the accumulated heat before the fluid is recirculated.
This closed-loop configuration provides a reusable source of temperature-controlled coolant and can reduce or eliminate dependence on continuous facility-water cooling.
With up to approximately 1.7 kW of refrigeration capacity, the FL1701 can support significantly larger heat loads than many compact benchtop instrument chillers. At the same time, its 23 L/min circulation system is well suited for applications that require substantial coolant flow without the higher pump pressures provided by some larger process chillers.
JULABO designed the FL1701 specifically for under-bench installation. The absence of side ventilation openings allows equipment to be positioned directly alongside the chiller where installation conditions permit, helping conserve valuable laboratory floor and bench space.

The JULABO FL1701 is suitable for a broad range of laboratory and process applications requiring continuous heat removal. Typical uses include analytical instrument cooling, rotary evaporator and condenser cooling, reactor temperature control, chemical synthesis, distillation equipment, vacuum systems, laser cooling, materials testing, process-development equipment, and general laboratory process cooling.
Its 1.7 kW maximum cooling capacity makes the FL1701 particularly useful when a small instrument chiller does not provide enough heat-removal capacity.
The FL1701 can also replace once-through facility-water cooling in compatible applications. Instead of continuously drawing fresh water and discharging it to a drain, the chiller recirculates the same heat-transfer fluid through a closed cooling loop.
This can reduce laboratory water consumption while providing more consistent coolant temperatures that are independent of seasonal changes in facility-water temperature.
The JULABO FL1701 is well suited for pharmaceutical and biotechnology facilities, chemistry laboratories, analytical laboratories, process-development groups, materials-science facilities, industrial R&D departments, pilot laboratories, manufacturing support laboratories, and academic research environments.
Its combination of substantial refrigeration capacity and moderate-pressure circulation makes it particularly useful for equipment requiring relatively high coolant flow without exceptionally high pressure.
The under-bench configuration is also valuable in laboratories where equipment density is high and available working space must be used efficiently.
The JULABO FL1701 provides a working temperature range of approximately -20°C to +40°C with specified temperature stability of approximately ±0.5°C. Microprocessor PID regulation controls coolant temperature, while the digital display provides 0.1°C setting and display resolution.
Cooling capacity varies substantially with operating temperature.
The FL1701 provides approximately 1.7 kW of cooling capacity at +20°C, 1.5 kW at +10°C, 1.1 kW at 0°C, 850 W at -10°C, and 400 W at -20°C.
This cooling curve is particularly important when sizing the FL1701 for an application. Although the chiller can operate at -20°C, it cannot remove the same amount of process heat at -20°C that it can at +20°C.
For example, a continuous 1 kW heat load falls within the published cooling capability around 0°C but substantially exceeds the available 400 W capacity at -20°C.
Chiller selection should therefore be based on the required cooling capacity at the intended coolant temperature rather than simply the maximum 1.7 kW rating.
The FL1701 provides maximum circulation flow of approximately 23 L/min and maximum pump pressure of approximately 1 bar, or 14.5 psi. Actual delivered flow depends on tubing diameter and length, fittings, coolant viscosity, temperature, elevation, and resistance within the connected equipment.
This used JULABO FL1701 Recirculating Chiller is refurbished and tested by American Instrument Exchange before shipment. Our technicians inspect the compressor, condenser, refrigeration circuit, circulation pump, stainless-steel reservoir, PID temperature controller, LED display, fluid-level system, external connections, electrical components, housing, and applicable safety systems.
Temperature-controlled equipment is tested using NIST-traceable probes and data loggers. The FL1701 is operated under simulated laboratory conditions to evaluate temperature pull-down, refrigeration performance, circulation, temperature regulation, controller operation, alarms, and overall system reliability.
The reservoir and accessible fluid-contact components are cleaned and inspected before shipment.
Customers requiring the FL1701 for a specific instrument or process are encouraged to provide the required coolant temperature, estimated continuous heat load, minimum flow, pressure requirements, and intended heat-transfer fluid. When practical, American Instrument Exchange can incorporate customer-requested operating conditions into final testing.
A 90-day warranty is included with this refurbished JULABO recirculating chiller.
The JULABO FL1701 is a substantial under-bench recirculating chiller weighing approximately 175–185 lb depending on configuration and production generation. American Instrument Exchange prepares the unit for commercial freight shipment with appropriate protection for the refrigeration system, controller, housing, pump, and fluid connections.
The cooling circuit should be drained before transportation and filled with an appropriate heat-transfer fluid after installation. Fluid selection should be based on the intended operating temperature, particularly for applications below the freezing point of water.
The FL1701 is designed without side ventilation openings, allowing units or other equipment to be positioned alongside the chiller. Appropriate front and rear airflow and service access should still be maintained according to manufacturer requirements.
The AIE unit operates on 115 V, 60 Hz power. Because JULABO manufactured the FL1701 in multiple voltage configurations, customers should confirm the electrical nameplate before installation.
External coolant tubing should be securely connected and inspected for leaks before operation.
American Instrument Exchange stocks a range of laboratory circulators, including JULABO recirculating chillers, refrigerated/heated circulators, immersion coolers, and process temperature-control systems. Laboratories considering the JULABO FL1701 may also want to compare available laboratory water baths, reactors and fermenters, evaporators and extractors, and other refurbished laboratory equipment.
