Mettler Toledo XPR20002L DeltaRange Precision Balance – Used & Refurbished

The Mettler Toledo XPR20002L DeltaRange Precision Balance is a high-performance laboratory weighing system designed for applications that require both substantial capacity and fine measurement resolution. With a maximum capacity of 20.1 kg, a 4.2 kg DeltaRange providing 0.01 g readability, and 0.1 g readability across the full weighing range, the XPR20002L is particularly well suited for formulation, batching, quality control, sample preparation, and other workflows involving large containers and relatively small ingredient additions.

Available used and refurbished from American Instrument Exchange, the XPR20002L combines Mettler Toledo's advanced XPR weighing technology with SmartPan, FACT automatic internal adjustment, a 7-inch color touchscreen, StatusLight, electronic results documentation, user management, extensive connectivity, and compatibility with LabX laboratory software.

The DeltaRange design is especially valuable for laboratories that need fine resolution when adding materials into larger tare vessels. Rather than choosing between a high-capacity balance and a substantially smaller high-resolution balance, the XPR20002L provides both capabilities within a single instrument.

Overview

The Mettler Toledo XPR20002L belongs to the Excellence XPR family of high-performance precision balances.

Its most important characteristic is the combination of high capacity and DeltaRange precision.

The balance can accommodate loads up to 20.1 kg while providing 0.01 g readability within a 4.2 kg fine range.

Across the broader full-capacity range, readability is 0.1 g.

This combination is particularly useful for laboratories where large containers, formulation vessels, bulk samples, or production materials must be weighed without giving up the ability to measure comparatively small additions accurately.

The XPR platform also adds extensive workflow, documentation, quality-assurance, and connectivity capabilities that go well beyond basic mass measurement.

Common Applications

The XPR20002L is particularly well suited for pharmaceutical formulation, chemical preparation, batching, buffer and media preparation, food and beverage development, cosmetics formulation, materials testing, industrial quality control, pilot-scale production, bulk sample preparation, component weighing, and tare-and-add procedures.

Pharmaceutical and biotechnology laboratories can use the balance when preparing larger formulations, buffers, solutions, media, or process-development batches.

Chemical laboratories can use the XPR20002L for compounds and mixtures where a relatively heavy vessel must remain on the balance while smaller quantities of ingredients are added.

Food, cosmetics, and industrial laboratories can use the balance for recipe development, formulation, raw-material weighing, and quality-control procedures.

Ideal Laboratory Types

The XPR20002L is well suited for pharmaceutical manufacturers, biotechnology companies, chemical laboratories, food and beverage companies, cosmetics manufacturers, industrial quality-control facilities, materials-science laboratories, pilot plants, research institutions, and formulation laboratories.

It is particularly valuable where technicians routinely work with heavier vessels but still need 0.01 g resolution for individual additions.

High-Capacity DeltaRange Precision Weighing

The XPR20002L provides 20.1 kg maximum capacity with 0.1 g readability across the full weighing range.

Within its 4.2 kg DeltaRange, readability improves to 0.01 g.

This means the balance can resolve 10 mg changes during appropriate fine-range weighing procedures while still accommodating loads exceeding 20 kg.

That combination provides significantly more flexibility than a conventional high-capacity balance that offers only 0.1 g or 1 g resolution.

For formulation and batching laboratories, this can allow both the container and ingredients to remain on the same weighing system throughout a procedure.

Understanding Mettler Toledo DeltaRange

DeltaRange is more sophisticated than a simple fixed dual-range specification.

A conventional dual-range balance typically provides its finest readability only within a predetermined lower portion of the total weighing range.

Mettler Toledo DeltaRange technology allows the fine range to be used in conjunction with taring.

This means a relatively heavy container can be placed on the balance and tared, after which the finer DeltaRange can become available for subsequent ingredient additions within the applicable range.

For formulation, this is particularly useful.

The gross load may be several kilograms, while the individual ingredient being added may require substantially finer measurement resolution.

Formulation & Batching Applications

The XPR20002L is especially strong as a formulation balance.

Consider a laboratory preparing a multi-component formulation in a substantial vessel.

The container itself may weigh several kilograms before any material is added.

Individual formulation components may then need to be measured in increments requiring 0.01 g resolution.

Using a conventional high-capacity balance could provide enough capacity but insufficient resolution.

Using a smaller precision balance could provide sufficient resolution but inadequate capacity.

The XPR20002L combines these requirements within a single weighing platform.

This can simplify workflows for pharmaceutical formulations, chemical mixtures, buffer preparation, culture media, cosmetics, coatings, food formulations, and pilot-scale processes.

SmartPan Weighing Technology

The XPR20002L uses Mettler Toledo SmartPan technology to improve weighing stability.

SmartPan is designed to reduce the influence of air turbulence around the weighing surface.

Reducing environmental disturbances can improve repeatability and allow results to stabilize more quickly.

For a high-capacity precision balance, this can be particularly useful when the instrument is installed in a busy laboratory, production area, or other environment where minor air movement cannot be completely eliminated.

Minimum Sample Weight & USP Applications

Mettler Toledo specifies a typical USP minimum weight of approximately 36 g for the XPR20002L based on a 0.1% measurement uncertainty criterion.

Minimum sample weight should not be confused with readability.

Although the fine DeltaRange displays increments as small as 0.01 g, this does not mean a 0.01 g sample can be quantitatively weighed with acceptable uncertainty.

For pharmaceutical and other regulated applications, laboratories should establish minimum sample weight under actual installation conditions and according to their applicable quality procedures.

The manufacturer's typical 36 g figure provides a useful reference point when evaluating whether the XPR20002L is appropriate for a specific regulated weighing procedure.

FACT Automatic Internal Adjustment

The XPR20002L incorporates Mettler Toledo FACT automatic internal adjustment.

FACT allows the balance to perform adjustment automatically when defined environmental conditions indicate that adjustment is appropriate.

Temperature changes can influence weighing-system response, making periodic adjustment important for maintaining precision.

Automatic internal adjustment reduces reliance on operators remembering to perform manual adjustment throughout the working day.

Laboratories can still use appropriate certified external weights for routine verification and quality-control testing.

Leveling Guidance

Proper leveling is important for reliable precision weighing.

The XPR platform incorporates leveling guidance that helps operators identify and correct improper installation.

This can be especially useful if the balance is moved for cleaning, relocated to another workstation, or installed in a shared laboratory.

Correct leveling should always be verified after transportation or repositioning.

StatusLight

The XPR20002L incorporates Mettler Toledo StatusLight technology to provide an immediate visual indication of instrument readiness.

Rather than requiring technicians to inspect multiple menu settings before beginning a weighing procedure, the status indicator provides a quick visual reference.

This can help users recognize whether the balance is operating under acceptable conditions before a critical measurement is recorded.

Environmental Influences

Although the XPR20002L is considerably less sensitive to minor environmental disturbances than an analytical or semi-micro balance, installation conditions still affect precision weighing.

The balance should be placed on a rigid, stable, level surface capable of supporting both the instrument and loads approaching its maximum capacity.

Vibration from centrifuges, shakers, pumps, compressors, manufacturing equipment, or unstable flooring should be minimized.

Direct HVAC airflow and rapid temperature changes should also be avoided.

For demanding DeltaRange measurements, allowing large containers and samples to equilibrate to laboratory temperature can further improve measurement consistency.

Overload Protection & Heavy Sample Handling

High-capacity balances routinely encounter large vessels, bulk materials, and heavy components.

The XPR platform incorporates overload protection to help protect the weighing system from accidental excessive loads.

Operators should nevertheless lower heavy containers carefully onto the weighing pan rather than dropping them.

Loads should also be positioned consistently and centered whenever practical.

Proper sample placement helps minimize eccentric-load effects and protects the weighing mechanism from unnecessary mechanical stress.

7-Inch Color Touchscreen

The XPR platform uses a large 7-inch color touchscreen designed to simplify routine weighing and method setup.

The interface provides access to weighing applications, stored methods, quality-assurance functions, results, user settings, and system information.

The large display is particularly useful for more complex formulation and production workflows where operators may need to follow multiple steps or enter sample information.

Integrated Methods & Workflow Control

Frequently used procedures can be configured and stored as methods within the XPR platform.

Method-based operation helps standardize repetitive laboratory procedures.

Instead of relying on individual technicians to remember settings or manually recreate a workflow each time, defined parameters can be stored and recalled.

This can improve consistency between operators and reduce setup time.

For formulation, batching, quality-control, and regulated applications, standardized methods can be especially valuable.

Electronic Results Documentation

The XPR platform incorporates electronic results documentation capabilities.

Measurement results and associated task information can be recorded without requiring technicians to manually copy every value into a notebook or spreadsheet.

Reducing manual transcription can save time and reduce the risk of recording errors.

Electronic results can also be transferred to compatible computers, printers, and laboratory systems.

User Management & Data Integrity

XPR balances support user management and password protection for laboratories requiring greater control over instrument access.

Different users can be assigned appropriate permissions and workflows.

When used with compatible LabX software, the XPR platform can support centralized method management, electronic records, audit trails, user administration, and workflows designed for regulated laboratory environments.

This makes the XPR20002L particularly attractive for pharmaceutical and quality-controlled operations where data integrity extends beyond the weighing result itself.

Connectivity & LabX Compatibility

The XPR20002L supports extensive connectivity for integration into modern laboratory environments.

Interfaces can include Ethernet, USB, and RS232 connections, allowing communication with compatible computers, printers, barcode readers, and laboratory information systems.

The balance is compatible with Mettler Toledo LabX software.

LabX can provide centralized data capture, method management, SOP-guided workflows, user administration, and additional data-integrity functionality.

XPR20002L vs. Conventional High-Capacity Precision Balance

A conventional 20 kg-class laboratory balance may provide 0.1 g or even 1 g readability throughout its weighing range.

The XPR20002L adds a 4.2 kg DeltaRange with 0.01 g readability.

This allows the same balance to perform both bulk weighing and finer quantitative additions.

For simple shipping, inventory, or bulk-material measurements, the additional DeltaRange capability may not be necessary.

For formulation, batching, and laboratory sample preparation, the finer range can provide a substantial advantage.

XPR20002L vs. XPR15002L

The XPR15002L is another high-performance XPR precision balance, providing approximately 15.1 kg maximum capacity with 0.01 g readability throughout its weighing range.

The XPR20002L extends maximum capacity to 20.1 kg but uses DeltaRange architecture: 0.01 g readability is available within its 4.2 kg fine range, while the broader range provides 0.1 g readability.

The XPR15002L is therefore better suited when 0.01 g readability is required continuously across loads exceeding 4.2 kg.

The XPR20002L provides additional maximum capacity for laboratories whose workflows can take advantage of DeltaRange operation.

DeltaRange vs. Full-Range 0.01 g Precision

Choosing between DeltaRange and full-range 0.01 g readability depends on the actual weighing procedure.

If a laboratory needs to directly weigh 8 kg, 10 kg, or 15 kg loads while retaining 0.01 g readability, a full-range high-resolution model is more appropriate.

If the laboratory primarily needs high capacity to accommodate a heavy container but uses finer resolution for smaller additions after taring, DeltaRange can provide an efficient solution.

Understanding this distinction prevents laboratories from selecting a balance based only on maximum capacity and finest readability without considering how those specifications interact.

Choosing the XPR20002L for Formulation Work

The XPR20002L is particularly compelling for formulation because its weighing architecture matches the structure of many formulation procedures.

A large vessel can remain on the balance while ingredients are added sequentially.

The high overall capacity accommodates the growing gross load, while DeltaRange provides finer resolution where it is most useful.

Integrated methods, user management, electronic results, StatusLight, FACT, and LabX compatibility further support controlled formulation workflows.

For pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, food, cosmetics, and other formulation environments, this combination can make the XPR20002L substantially more useful than a basic high-capacity scale.

Refurbishment & Performance Testing

Each used Mettler Toledo XPR20002L offered by American Instrument Exchange undergoes inspection, cleaning, calibration, and functional testing before shipment.

Technicians inspect the housing, touchscreen, weighing pan, leveling components, power system, interfaces, and installed accessories.

The balance is evaluated using appropriate reference weights at multiple points across its weighing range.

Repeatability testing uses repeated measurements of the same reference load to evaluate measurement consistency.

Linearity testing checks performance across low, intermediate, and higher loads.

Corner-load testing evaluates whether sample position produces unacceptable differences across the weighing pan.

The DeltaRange is also evaluated to confirm appropriate fine-range operation.

FACT, taring, zeroing, touchscreen controls, and other installed functions are tested as applicable.

Following final quality-control testing and cleaning, the balance is prepared for shipment.

Used and refurbished equipment from American Instrument Exchange includes a 90-day warranty unless otherwise specified.

Shipping & Installation Considerations

The XPR20002L should be installed on a rigid, stable, level surface capable of supporting the balance and loads approaching its maximum 20.1 kg capacity.

The workstation should be protected from excessive vibration and strong air currents.

After transportation, the balance should be allowed to acclimate to the laboratory environment before critical measurements begin.

Leveling should be verified and FACT adjustment allowed to operate as appropriate.

Laboratories should then verify weighing performance with suitable reference weights according to their internal quality procedures.

Heavy containers should be placed carefully and centered on the weighing pan whenever practical.
