Overview
The Millipore Direct-Q family was designed to simplify laboratory water purification by generating both pure and ultrapure water from a single compact system.
Incoming potable tap water first undergoes pretreatment and reverse osmosis. This produces Type 3 water while reducing ionic, organic, particulate, and other contaminants present in the incoming feed water.
Water intended for higher-purity applications undergoes additional purification through the system's polishing components. In the UV configuration, ultraviolet treatment further reduces organic contamination before the water reaches the point of delivery.
The result is a flexible water purification platform capable of supporting both general laboratory water requirements and more demanding ultrapure-water applications.

Type 1 and Type 3 Water from One System
One of the principal advantages of the Direct-Q 8 UV is its ability to provide two useful grades of laboratory water from the same purification platform.
Type 3 water is produced through reverse osmosis and can support routine laboratory applications that do not require ultrapure water.
Additional purification converts water into Type 1 ultrapure water for more sensitive laboratory applications.
This dual-water capability allows laboratories to reserve ultrapure water for procedures that genuinely require it while using RO water for less demanding applications.
8 Liter per Hour RO Production
The Direct-Q 8 designation reflects the system's nominal reverse osmosis production rate.
Millipore specifies approximately 8 liters per hour at 25°C, with a ±15% production tolerance.
Actual production can vary with feed-water temperature, pressure, quality, membrane condition, cartridge condition, and other operating factors.
For laboratories with moderate daily purified-water demand, this capacity can provide a practical balance between production rate and system footprint.
Type 1 Ultrapure Water
The Direct-Q 8 UV is designed to produce Type 1 ultrapure water with resistivity up to 18.2 MΩ·cm at 25°C when operated under the manufacturer's specified conditions with properly maintained purification components.
A resistivity of 18.2 MΩ·cm represents extremely low ionic contamination and is commonly associated with high-quality laboratory ultrapure water.
Maintaining this level of water quality depends on appropriate feed water, system condition, purification cartridge condition, UV performance, final filtration, sanitization, and routine maintenance.
UV Treatment and TOC Reduction
The UV-equipped Direct-Q configuration incorporates ultraviolet treatment to improve organic water quality.
The dual-wavelength UV lamp emits at 185 and 254 nm. The 185 nm wavelength assists in oxidation of organic molecules, while UV treatment also contributes to microbial control within the purification process.
Millipore specifies total organic carbon of ≤5 ppb for the UV-equipped Direct-Q under appropriate operating conditions.
This lower organic background can be useful for analytical and research applications that may be affected by organic contamination in laboratory water.
Reverse Osmosis Purification
Reverse osmosis forms the primary purification stage of the Direct-Q 8.
Pressure forces incoming water across a semipermeable membrane, substantially reducing dissolved ions, organic contaminants, particulates, microorganisms, and other impurities.
Millipore specifies greater than 96% ionic rejection, greater than 99% rejection of organics with molecular weight above 200, and greater than 99% rejection of bacteria and particulates under specified conditions.
The resulting Type 3 RO water can either be used for appropriate general laboratory applications or undergo additional purification to produce Type 1 water.
Ultrapure Water Polishing
After reverse osmosis, water intended for Type 1 use passes through additional purification stages.
The polishing pack is designed to remove trace ionic and organic contaminants remaining after the upstream purification process.
A point-of-use polishing device can provide an additional final purification stage immediately before water is dispensed.
The exact final water quality depends on the installed purification components and their condition.
Existing Cartridges Included – New Cartridges Not Included
This used Direct-Q 8 UV is being sold with the purification cartridges currently installed in the system.
These are existing cartridges and should not be represented as new cartridges.
Purification cartridges are consumable components whose performance and remaining useful life depend on previous water usage, feed-water quality, storage conditions, maintenance history, and total operating time.
American Instrument Exchange therefore does not represent the existing cartridges as having a particular remaining service life.
Customers whose applications require documented or consistent ultrapure-water specifications should plan to evaluate the installed consumables and replace them as necessary.
Why Cartridge Condition Matters
Water purification performance depends heavily on consumable condition.
Pretreatment cartridges protect downstream reverse osmosis components from contaminants such as particulates and chlorine. Polishing packs remove trace ionic and organic contamination, while point-of-use filters or polishers provide application-specific final treatment.
As these consumables age or become exhausted, their ability to maintain specified water quality can decline.
For this reason, buyers should distinguish between the operational condition of the Direct-Q system itself and the condition of its consumable purification components.
Progard Pretreatment
The Direct-Q purification architecture uses a Progard pretreatment cartridge upstream of the reverse osmosis stage.
Its purpose is to protect the RO membrane from feed-water contaminants that can reduce membrane performance or operating life.
This includes protection against particulate loading, mineral scaling, and chlorine-related oxidation.
Because the pretreatment cartridge is a consumable item, replacement requirements depend on the condition of the installed cartridge and the characteristics of the laboratory's incoming water.
Q-Pak Polishing
The Q-Pak purification pack performs the final polishing required to produce ultrapure water.
It removes trace levels of ionic and organic contaminants remaining after the upstream purification stages.
Q-Pak condition therefore directly influences the quality of the ultrapure water produced by the system.
The existing purification pack supplied with this used system is not represented as new, and laboratories should replace consumables when required for their application.
Point-of-Use Final Purification
The Direct-Q platform can be configured with a final point-of-use purification device selected according to application requirements.
Different final polishers can target particulates, microorganisms, endotoxins, nucleases, or other contaminants depending on the selected configuration.
Water-quality specifications associated with a particular final filter apply only when the required final purification device is correctly installed and maintained.
Customers should select the appropriate final polisher according to the intended laboratory application.
Water Quality for Analytical Applications
High-purity laboratory water is important in analytical chemistry because contamination from the water source can contribute background signals, interfere with reagents, contaminate samples, or affect instrument performance.
The Direct-Q 8 UV can provide ultrapure water for preparation of compatible analytical standards, buffers, reagents, blanks, and other solutions when the system is equipped and maintained appropriately for the required method.
For highly sensitive analytical methods, laboratories should establish water-quality requirements based on the specific instrumentation and procedure rather than relying solely on a general Type 1 classification.
HPLC and Chromatography Support
Ultrapure water is frequently required in chromatography laboratories for preparation of buffers, standards, samples, rinsing solutions, and aqueous mobile-phase components.
The low ionic and organic contamination achievable from a properly maintained Direct-Q 8 UV can make the system useful in HPLC-support workflows.
Specific chromatography methods may have additional requirements for TOC, particulates, microbial contamination, degassing, or final filtration.
Water quality should therefore be verified against the requirements of the analytical method.
Molecular Biology Applications
Appropriately configured ultrapure-water systems can also support molecular biology workflows.
Millipore specifies very low RNase and DNase levels when the Direct-Q is equipped with the appropriate BioPak final polisher.
These specifications should not be attributed to the basic Direct-Q system without the required final purification device.
For nuclease-sensitive applications, users should verify that the appropriate final polisher is installed and within its recommended service life.
Endotoxin-Sensitive Applications
Millipore specifies very low endotoxin levels when an appropriate BioPak ultrafiltration cartridge is installed as the final polisher.
This can support research applications where endotoxin contamination is a concern.
As with nuclease specifications, this performance depends on the correct final purification cartridge and appropriate system maintenance.
The Direct-Q 8 UV alone should not be assumed to meet an application-specific endotoxin requirement without the appropriate point-of-use configuration and verification.
General Laboratory Water
Not every laboratory application requires Type 1 water.
The Direct-Q 8 also provides Type 3 reverse osmosis water that can support suitable general laboratory procedures.
Depending on laboratory protocols, RO water may be used for tasks such as glassware rinsing, preparation of cleaning solutions, water baths, humidification, or as feed water for other purification processes.
Using the appropriate grade of water for each application can help conserve ultrapure-water consumables.
Feed Water Requirements
The Direct-Q system is designed to operate from potable tap water meeting the manufacturer's feed-water requirements.
Feed-water quality can influence RO production rate, cartridge life, membrane performance, maintenance frequency, and final product-water quality.
Millipore specifies feed-water temperature, pressure, conductivity, chlorine, pH, dissolved carbon dioxide, and fouling limits for proper system operation.
Laboratories with unusual or challenging incoming water should evaluate feed-water quality before installation.
Monitoring Water Quality
The Direct-Q includes a display for monitoring system status and water-quality information.
This allows operators to review operating conditions and respond to maintenance or consumable alerts.
Water-quality monitoring is particularly important with used purification systems because the quality of the water produced depends not only on the hardware but also on the condition of membranes, cartridges, UV lamps, final filters, and other consumable components.
Consumable Replacement
The Direct-Q platform was designed with replaceable purification components.
Depending on system configuration, consumables can include pretreatment cartridges, polishing packs, point-of-use filters, UV lamps, and other maintenance items.
The system provides maintenance prompts for certain consumables and service functions.
When purchasing a used water purification system, laboratories should budget for periodic consumable re
