Overview

The Sartorius Entris II BCA324I-1S is a high-capacity analytical balance designed for laboratories that need 0.1 mg resolution without the capacity restrictions associated with many conventional analytical balances.

A typical analytical balance may provide approximately 120 g or 220 g maximum capacity.

The BCA324I-1S increases that capacity to 320 g while maintaining 0.1 mg readability.

That additional working range can be particularly useful because balance capacity must accommodate the combined weight of both the sample and its tare vessel.

Larger glassware, crucibles, bottles, containers, and other vessels can consume a significant portion of a lower-capacity balance's available range before the sample is added.

The BCA324I-1S provides considerably more room for those applications while retaining true analytical-level resolution.

Common Applications

The Sartorius BCA324I-1S is well suited for quantitative chemical analysis, pharmaceutical sample preparation, formulation, standards preparation, reagent weighing, gravimetric analysis, quality control, density determination, percentage weighing, differential weighing, filter weighing, residue analysis, materials research, and general quantitative laboratory work.

Pharmaceutical and biotechnology laboratories can use the balance for formulation ingredients, research compounds, reference materials, reagents, buffers, and analytical sample preparation.

Chemical laboratories can use the BCA324I-1S for standards preparation, solution preparation, compound weighing, gravimetric procedures, and quality-control testing.

Materials science and industrial laboratories may find the larger 320 g capacity especially useful when samples or sample holders are heavier than those typically encountered in pharmaceutical or chemical analysis.

Ideal Laboratory Types

The BCA324I-1S is particularly well suited for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, environmental, analytical testing, academic, food and beverage, cosmetics, materials science, R&D, and quality-control laboratories.

Its 320 g capacity makes it especially useful as a shared or general-purpose analytical balance.

Rather than selecting an analytical balance around one narrow application, laboratories can use the additional capacity to accommodate a wider range of sample containers and procedures.

For laboratories that routinely need 10 µg resolution or particularly small minimum sample quantities, a semi-microbalance may still be preferable.

When 0.1 mg readability satisfies the analytical method, the BCA324I-1S provides an unusually flexible combination of resolution and capacity.

High-Capacity Analytical Weighing Performance

The BCA324I-1S provides 0.1 mg readability throughout its 320 g weighing range.

Sartorius specifies typical repeatability of approximately 0.08 mg at around 5% of maximum load and approximately 0.1 mg near maximum capacity.

The manufacturer specifies a linearity limit of ±0.3 mg and a typical linearity value of approximately ±0.06 mg.

Typical stabilization time is ≤1.5 seconds.

This performance allows the BCA324I-1S to provide true analytical resolution while accommodating significantly heavier total loads than lower-capacity analytical balances.

Why 320 g Capacity Matters

The advantage of the BCA324I-1S becomes particularly apparent when tare weight is considered.

A laboratory may only need to weigh a 20 g sample, but if that sample is placed in a 200 g container, the balance must support a total load of approximately 220 g.

That procedure would already approach the maximum capacity of a conventional 220 g analytical balance.

With 320 g available, the BCA324I-1S provides substantially more room for the vessel and sample while retaining 0.1 mg readability.

This makes the balance useful for laboratories that work with heavier weighing bottles, glassware, crucibles, larger sample containers, specialized holders, or other substantial tare loads.

Minimum Sample Weight & USP Applications

Sartorius technical documentation lists an optimum minimum initial weight of approximately 0.082 g, or 82 mg, according to USP Chapter 41 conditions for this analytical balance family.

The manufacturer also provides a typical minimum initial weight of approximately 0.16 g, or 160 mg.

These figures demonstrate why readability should not be confused with quantitative minimum sample weight.

Although the BCA324I-1S displays changes as small as 0.1 mg, that does not mean a 0.1 mg sample can be quantitatively weighed within typical pharmaceutical uncertainty requirements.

For USP, GMP, GLP, or other controlled procedures, laboratories should establish minimum weight using repeatability testing performed on the installed balance under actual operating conditions.

Controlling Drafts & Airflow

At 0.1 mg readability, even relatively minor air movement can influence the displayed result.

The BCA324I-1S therefore incorporates a manual analytical draft shield to protect the weighing pan and sample from routine laboratory airflow.

The enclosure helps reduce disturbances caused by HVAC systems, doors, nearby personnel, and other sources of moving air.

For best performance, the balance should still be positioned away from direct HVAC outlets, fans, open windows, frequently used doors, and other strong airflow sources.

Vibration, Temperature & Static Control

The BCA324I-1S should be installed on a rigid, stable weighing surface away from significant vibration.

Centrifuges, shakers, pumps, compressors, refrigerators, freezers, and other equipment can transmit vibration through laboratory benches, floors, or surrounding structures.

Temperature differences between samples and the laboratory environment can also influence analytical weighing.

Whenever practical, samples should be allowed to equilibrate to room conditions before critical quantitative measurements.

Static electricity may become significant when weighing powders, filters, plastics, films, glassware, and other materials prone to electrostatic charge.

Appropriate antistatic accessories or handling techniques may be helpful when static becomes a meaningful source of error.

isoCAL Automatic Internal Adjustment

The BCA324I-1S incorporates Sartorius isoCAL automatic internal adjustment.

The “I” in the model designation identifies this internal-adjustment configuration.

isoCAL uses an internal reference weight to automatically perform adjustment when defined time or temperature conditions indicate that adjustment is required.

Sartorius specifies a 1.5 K temperature-change trigger and a four-hour time interval for isoCAL on this model.

Automatic internal adjustment helps maintain consistent analytical performance as laboratory conditions change throughout the day and reduces the need for technicians to manually perform routine adjustment using an external weight.

Independent verification may still be required according to USP, GMP, GLP, ISO, or laboratory-specific quality procedures.

Real-Time Level Support

Correct leveling is important for analytical weighing.

The Entris II Advanced platform incorporates Real-Time Level Support to help users recognize when the balance requires leveling.

This is particularly useful in multi-user laboratories where balances may occasionally be moved or repositioned during cleaning or maintenance.

The system provides additional operator guidance to help ensure that weighing begins with the balance properly set up.

CalAudit Trail

The BCA324I-1S incorporates Sartorius CalAudit Trail functionality.

This supports documentation of calibration and adjustment activity and provides laboratories with a more complete record of balance performance.

Calibration-event documentation can be particularly valuable in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, quality-control, and other laboratories operating under formal quality systems.

Rather than treating adjustment as an undocumented background function, CalAudit Trail provides additional traceability for instrument activity.

Integrated Protection Systems

Entris II Advanced balances incorporate integrated protection systems designed to help operators recognize unsuitable weighing conditions and avoid accepting compromised measurements.

These systems provide additional guidance beyond simply displaying a weight value.

For shared laboratory instruments, integrated safeguards can help standardize weighing practices and reduce dependence on individual operator experience.

LED Screen with Touch Technology

The Entris II Advanced platform uses an LED screen with touch technology for access to weighing functions, applications, settings, adjustment information, and instrument controls.

The interface provides a straightforward menu structure while supporting the additional functionality expected from a modern analytical balance.

For laboratories replacing older instruments, the interface can simplify operator training and make commonly used weighing applications easier to access.

Built-In Applications

The Entris II Advanced platform includes integrated applications for common laboratory weighing procedures.

Applications support procedures such as weighing and dosing, counting, percentage weighing, mixing, totalizing, animal weighing, calculations, density determination, statistics, peak hold, checkweighing, and mass-unit conversion.

Underfloor weighing capability is also available for specialized procedures where a sample cannot conveniently be placed on the standard weighing pan.

Built-in applications can reduce manual calculations and help laboratories standardize repetitive weighing procedures.

Connectivity & Data Transfer

The BCA324I-1S provides electronic interfaces for connection to compatible computers, printers, and laboratory peripherals.

RS232 and USB-C connectivity support electronic transfer of weighing data and integration with digital laboratory workflows.

Direct electronic transfer can reduce dependence on handwritten records and manual transcription.

For laboratories processing large numbers of analytical samples, this can improve efficiency while reducing opportunities for transcription error.

Underfloor Weighing

The BCA324I-1S supports underfloor weighing.

This allows a sample to be suspended beneath the balance rather than positioned directly on the weighing pan.

Underfloor weighing can be useful for density measurements, magnetic materials, unusually shaped objects, or specialized research applications where conventional pan weighing is unsuitable.

Choosing Between 120 g, 220 g & 320 g Analytical Balances

The Entris II Advanced analytical family provides several capacities while maintaining the same 0.1 mg readability.

The BCA124I-1S provides 120 g capacity.

The BCA224I-1S provides 220 g capacity.

The BCA324I-1S increases maximum capacity to 320 g.

For laboratories working almost exclusively with small samples and lightweight vessels, the 120 g model may provide all the capacity required.

The 220 g model provides greater flexibility for routine analytical work and is a strong general-purpose choice.

The 320 g BCA324I-1S becomes particularly attractive when heavier vessels, larger samples, or specialized sample holders are regularly used.

Because all three models provide 0.1 mg readability, laboratories can select capacity according to their actual working requirements without sacrificing displayed analytical resolution.

BCA324I-1S vs. BCA224I-1S

The BCA324I-1S and BCA224I-1S provide the same 0.1 mg readability and share many Entris II Advanced features.

The major difference is maximum capacity.

The BCA224I-1S provides 220 g.

The BCA324I-1S provides 320 g.

That additional 100 g can be significant when heavier tare vessels are involved.

For routine analytical samples that remain comfortably below 220 g including the container, the BCA224I-1S may be sufficient.

For laboratories that want greater tare flexibility or routinely work with heavier total loads, the BCA324I-1S provides additional working headroom.

Analytical Balance vs. Semi-Microbalance

The BCA324I-1S provides conventional analytical readability of 0.1 mg.

A semi-microbalance typically provides 0.01 mg / 10 µg readability, giving it ten times finer displayed resolution.

Semi-micro performance can be valuable for very small samples, expensive compounds, potent materials, pharmaceutical reference standards, and methods with particularly demanding uncertainty requirements.

Greater sensitivity also increases susceptibility to environmental effects such as vibration, airflow, static electricity, and temperature gradients.

When 0.1 mg readability satisfies the analytical method, the BCA324I-1S provides a practical combination of high capacity, analytical sensitivity, rapid stabilization, and ease of use.

Entris II Advanced vs. Entris II Essential

Sartorius offers Entris II balances in both Essential and Advanced configurations.

The Advanced Line represented by the BCA324I-1S adds operator-guidance, quality-control, and workflow features beyond basic weighing functionality.

Real-Time Level Support, CalAudit Trail, integrated protection systems, enhanced user controls, and expanded applications can be especially useful in multi-user or documentation-intensive laboratories.

The Advanced platform is therefore particularly well suited for laboratories where weighing is part of a controlled analytical workflow rather than simply an isolated mass measurement.

Shipping & Installation Considerations

The BCA324I-1S should be installed on a rigid, stable, vibration-resistant laboratory surface away from direct HVAC airflow, windows, frequently used doors, centrifuges, shakers, pumps, compressors, refrigerators, freezers, and other sources of vibration or air movement.

After installation, the balance should be leveled and allowed to acclimate to the laboratory environment before critical quantitative measurements begin.

The isoCAL system can then support routine internal adjustment as time and temperature conditions change.

For regulated or particularly demanding applications, installation should be followed by appropriate calibration verification, repeatability testing, minimum-weight determination, or qualification according to the laboratory's quality procedures.
