Not every laboratory needs a full-size upright ultralow freezer. Many research groups simply need dependable -86°C storage close to where experiments happen. The Stirling Ultracold SU105UE Undercounter Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer was designed specifically for these environments, delivering full ultra-low temperature performance in a compact cabinet that fits beneath laboratory benches, stacks easily, or operates as a freestanding unit.
With 3.7 cubic feet (105 liters) of storage capacity, room for up to 72 standard 2-inch cryoboxes, and a temperature range from -20°C to -86°C, the SU105UE provides dedicated ultra-low storage for individual laboratories, clinical departments, pharmaceutical production suites, and research groups that do not require a large central freezer. Powered by Stirling's patented free-piston engine, it delivers dependable sample protection while consuming significantly less energy than many conventional compressor-based ULT freezers.
Laboratories creating a complete cold storage workflow often use compact ultralow freezers alongside laboratory refrigerators for refrigerated products, laboratory freezers for intermediate-temperature storage, and full-size ultralow freezers for centralized sample archives. The SU105UE fills the gap by placing ultra-low storage exactly where researchers need it.

The SU105UE was developed for laboratories where valuable floor space is just as important as dependable ultra-low temperature storage. Its compact footprint allows researchers to install a dedicated ULT freezer directly within the laboratory rather than relying exclusively on centralized freezer rooms.
Unlike traditional cascade refrigeration systems, the SU105UE uses Stirling's patented free-piston engine to continuously modulate cooling output instead of cycling compressors on and off. This design reduces mechanical complexity, lowers energy consumption, minimizes laboratory heat generation, and provides excellent temperature stability throughout daily operation.
Many laboratories position the SU105UE alongside biosafety cabinets, CO₂ incubators, and refrigerated centrifuges, allowing researchers to prepare, process, and preserve valuable biological samples within the same workspace while minimizing unnecessary sample transport.
The Stirling Ultracold SU105UE is commonly used for:
Cell line storage
Stem cell research
DNA and RNA libraries
Clinical specimens
Tissue samples
Plasma and serum
Protein samples
Enzymes
Vaccines
Pharmaceutical compounds
Biological reference materials
Departmental research collections
Its compact footprint makes it particularly well suited for individual research laboratories, university departments, hospital specialty laboratories, biotechnology startups, GMP cleanrooms, and satellite laboratory facilities where a full-size upright ultralow freezer would occupy unnecessary space.
The SU105UE is an excellent choice for:
Academic research laboratories
Biotechnology companies
Pharmaceutical manufacturers
Cell and gene therapy laboratories
Hospitals and clinical laboratories
University core facilities
Public health laboratories
Cleanroom environments
Research groups requiring dedicated ultra-low storage
Although compact, the SU105UE delivers the same ultra-low temperature performance expected from larger Stirling platforms. The free-piston Stirling engine continuously adjusts cooling output to maintain stable cabinet temperatures while minimizing energy consumption.
Vacuum insulation panels maximize usable storage volume while improving thermal efficiency, and the compact cabinet volume allows rapid recovery following routine door openings. Laboratories preserving especially valuable biological collections often use the SU105UE alongside cryogenic storage systems, allowing each preservation technology to support the applications where it performs best.
The SU105UE is commonly used to store:
DNA and RNA libraries
Cell lines
Stem cells

One of the defining advantages of the SU105UE is its exceptionally low operating cost. The patented Stirling engine consumes less than 4 kWh/day at -80°C, generates significantly less heat than conventional cascade refrigeration systems, and eliminates compressor cycling. For laboratories operating multiple ULT freezers, these savings can reduce both electrical consumption and HVAC demand while supporting institutional sustainability initiatives.
Specifications compiled from Stirling Ultracold manufacturer literature and American Instrument Exchange product information.
Every Stirling Ultracold SU105UE received by American Instrument Exchange undergoes a comprehensive inspection and extended performance evaluation before shipment. Our technicians verify pull-down performance, confirm stable operation throughout the operating temperature range, inspect the Stirling engine cooling system, test alarms and touchscreen controls, evaluate door gaskets and cabinet insulation, verify temperature stability, and thoroughly clean the freezer before delivery.
The Stirling Ultracold SU105UE ships by freight from American Instrument Exchange. Before installation, laboratories should verify undercounter clearances, electrical service, and adequate ventilation around the cabinet. Its compact footprint and worldwide power compatibility make it easy to install in existing laboratories, cleanrooms, mobile research environments, or facilities with limited available space.
Can the SU105UE fit underneath a standard laboratory bench?
Yes. The SU105UE was specifically designed for undercounter installation, allowing laboratories to place ultra-low temperature storage directly within the research workspace while preserving valuable floor space.
Why would a laboratory choose an undercounter ULT instead of a full-size upright freezer?
Many laboratories don't need hundreds of cryoboxes of storage. The SU105UE provides dedicated ultra-low storage for individual research groups, specialty laboratories, or departmental applications without the footprint, energy use, or cost of a larger upright freezer.
Can the SU105UE operate internationally?
Yes. The freezer accepts 100–240V, 50/60 Hz input power, allowing it to operate worldwide without requiring dedicated regional models or voltage conversion.
What makes Stirling engine technology different from conventional ULT refrigeration?
Instead of using traditional compressors and cascade refrigeration, the SU105UE uses a patented free-piston Stirling engine with very few moving parts. This design provides excellent temperature stability, low energy consumption, quiet operation, and reduced maintenance while maintaining dependable ultra-low temperature performance.
