VWR Symphony 414004-614 Incubator Overview

The VWR Symphony 414004-614 is a gravity-convection general-purpose incubator designed to provide stable elevated temperatures while minimizing unnecessary air movement around samples. Its 105 L chamber offers approximately 3.7 cu. ft. of usable capacity, placing it between compact benchtop incubators and larger 5-cu.-ft.-plus laboratory models.

Unlike a forced-air incubator, the 414004-614 does not depend on a mechanical blower to circulate heated air. Instead, temperature distribution occurs through natural convection as warmer air rises and cooler air descends within the chamber. This creates a relatively gentle incubation environment and reduces the potential for excessive drying of samples.

Temperature is regulated using an advanced microprocessor controller and PT100 temperature sensor. The digital backlit display provides convenient monitoring and adjustment of operating conditions, while the controller incorporates temperature and time storage functions for repeatable laboratory procedures.

The chamber is constructed from stainless steel and includes two adjustable stainless steel shelves. A solid outer door provides insulation, while the separate inner glass door allows researchers to inspect samples without fully exposing the chamber to room air.

Common Applications

The VWR Symphony 414004-614 is well suited for microbiology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical quality control, clinical research, food science, environmental laboratories, academic research, and general laboratory incubation. Typical applications include bacterial culture, microbiological testing, media warming, sample conditioning, biochemical studies, germination testing, constant-temperature studies, and other procedures requiring controlled temperatures above ambient.

Gravity convection can be particularly useful when samples may be affected by stronger mechanical airflow. The relatively gentle chamber environment helps minimize unnecessary drying and reduces air movement around lightweight samples, culture vessels, powders, and loosely covered containers.

Laboratories performing microbiological or biological research may use the VWR Symphony 414004-614 alongside biosafety cabinets for controlled sample handling and laboratory centrifuges for sample preparation and separation. Laboratory refrigerators and laboratory freezers provide complementary storage for cultures, media, reagents, and temperature-sensitive materials.

Sample Types & Incubation Recommendations

The VWR Symphony 414004-614 is a general-purpose temperature incubator rather than a CO₂ or refrigerated incubator. It is best suited for samples requiring stable elevated temperatures without controlled gases, refrigeration, or active humidity regulation.

Common Samples & Applications

  • Bacterial and microbiological cultures

  • Culture media

  • Biochemical samples

  • Pharmaceutical quality-control samples

  • Food and beverage testing samples

  • Environmental samples

  • Germination samples

  • Clinical and research specimens

Typical Laboratory Vessels

  • Petri and culture dishes

  • Test tubes and tube racks

  • Culture bottles

  • Erlenmeyer flasks

  • Sample vials

  • Media bottles

  • Multiwell plates

  • Other vessels compatible with the chamber

The 3.7 cu. ft. chamber provides substantially more working space than a compact benchtop incubator while remaining relatively easy to accommodate in a laboratory. Two adjustable shelves allow users to modify the chamber layout around different vessel sizes and sample loads.

The incubator also includes an internal 110V outlet that can support compatible auxiliary equipment when appropriate. Any powered equipment placed inside the chamber should be evaluated for dimensions, electrical load, heat generation, and compatibility with the intended incubation temperature.

Temperature Control & Environmental Stability

The VWR Symphony 414004-614 uses natural gravity convection to distribute heat through the chamber. As heated air rises and cooler air descends, a continuous natural circulation pattern develops without requiring a mechanical blower.

This approach offers an important tradeoff compared with forced-air incubation. Mechanical convection can provide faster recovery and strong temperature distribution, while gravity convection creates a gentler environment with fewer air changes and less potential for sample drying. For many routine microbiological and general laboratory procedures, this makes gravity convection an attractive choice.

At a typical 37°C setpoint, temperature accuracy is approximately ±0.2°C, with temperature uniformity of approximately ±0.4°C under specified operating conditions. Temperature setting accuracy is approximately ±0.1°C. Published performance data indicate a heat-up time of approximately 20 minutes to 37°C and a recovery time of approximately eight minutes under specified conditions.

A PT100 temperature sensor provides stable and repeatable temperature measurement over extended periods. The microprocessor controller incorporates over-temperature protection, over-current protection, sensor-error detection, and a locking function that helps prevent unintended changes to operating settings.

The separate inner glass door allows researchers to visually inspect samples without immediately exchanging the chamber atmosphere with room air. This can help reduce temperature disturbances during routine monitoring.

This particular American Instrument Exchange unit also includes a chart recorder. For laboratories performing extended incubation or temperature-sensitive procedures, recorded temperature data can provide a useful historical record of chamber conditions.

Overall, the combination of microprocessor temperature control, gentle gravity convection, PT100 sensing, glass-door sample viewing, and moderate 3.7 cu. ft. capacity makes the VWR Symphony 414004-614 a versatile general-purpose incubator for routine laboratory work.

VWR Symphony 414004-614 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the advantage of gravity convection in the VWR Symphony 414004-614?

Gravity convection circulates heated air naturally rather than using a mechanical fan. This creates a gentler incubation environment with reduced air movement, which can help minimize drying and disturbance of sensitive or lightweight samples.

How large is the VWR Symphony 414004-614?

The incubator provides approximately 105 L (3.7 cu. ft.) of chamber capacity. Its interior measures approximately 19.1"W × 16.1"D × 21.1"H, providing useful capacity for routine laboratory sample loads without requiring the footprint of a large floor-standing incubator.

What is the temperature range of the VWR 414004-614?

The incubator is intended for temperatures approximately 5°C above ambient up to 70°C. Because it does not incorporate refrigeration, it cannot actively maintain temperatures at or below normal laboratory ambient conditions.

Does the VWR Symphony 414004-614 have a glass door?

Yes. The incubator has a solid exterior door and a separate inner glass door, allowing samples to be visually inspected without fully opening the incubation chamber and immediately exposing samples to room air.

What is the chart recorder used for?

The chart recorder included with this American Instrument Exchange unit provides a physical record of chamber temperature over time. This can be useful for extended incubation procedures, quality-control applications, or laboratories that want an additional method of documenting temperature performance.

Is this VWR Symphony incubator refurbished?

Used VWR Symphony incubators offered by American Instrument Exchange are inspected, cleaned, and tested prior to shipment. Temperature-controlled equipment is tested using calibrated monitoring equipment to verify temperature performance and the accuracy of the controls and readouts, with components replaced as necessary. Refurbished equipment includes a 90-day warranty.
