The Mettler Toledo XSR4001S is part of the Excellence XSR family of precision balances, designed to provide reliable weighing performance while simplifying everyday laboratory workflows.
Its 4.1 kg capacity and 0.1 g readability make it particularly useful for routine sample preparation, formulation, ingredient weighing, reagent preparation, quality control, and other procedures involving gram-to-kilogram quantities.
Mettler Toledo combines the balance's high-performance weighing cell with SmartPan technology, which helps minimize the effects of air movement on the weighing system. This allows the XSR4001S to stabilize rapidly while maintaining an open weighing area that provides convenient access for samples and containers.
The XSR4001S also incorporates workflow and documentation capabilities beyond those found on basic precision balances. Operators can store regularly used methods, record results electronically, and transfer weighing data to connected systems rather than relying entirely on handwritten transcription.
For laboratories seeking Mettler Toledo weighing technology without requiring microgram or sub-milligram resolution, the XSR4001S offers an effective combination of capacity, speed, ease of use, and advanced laboratory workflow features.
The Mettler Toledo XSR4001S is well suited for routine laboratory weighing procedures involving samples, ingredients, containers, and materials within its 4.1 kg capacity range.
Pharmaceutical and biotechnology laboratories can use the XSR4001S for formulation, media and buffer preparation, reagent preparation, component weighing, sample preparation, and quality-control procedures.
Chemical laboratories may use the balance for compound preparation, percentage weighing, formulation development, reagent preparation, and general quantitative laboratory work.
The XSR4001S is also appropriate for food and beverage, cosmetics, materials science, environmental, academic, industrial research, and manufacturing laboratories where dependable 0.1 g resolution and rapid sample throughput are required.
The XSR4001S is a strong choice for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, food and beverage, cosmetics, materials science, environmental, academic, manufacturing, industrial research, and quality-control laboratories.
Its 4.1 kg capacity provides ample room for routine laboratory samples as well as bottles, beakers, flasks, containers, and other vessels that may be too heavy or cumbersome for a smaller analytical balance.
The XSR4001S is particularly attractive for laboratories performing repetitive weighing procedures. Its fast stabilization, open weighing surface, stored methods, touchscreen interface, and electronic data-transfer capabilities can help streamline workflows where multiple measurements are performed throughout the working day.
The Mettler Toledo XSR4001S provides 100 mg (0.1 g) readability across a 4.1 kg weighing range, offering a practical combination of laboratory-grade measurement performance and useful capacity.
Mettler Toledo specifies typical repeatability of approximately 40 mg, with typical linearity deviation of approximately 20 mg and specified linearity of ±60 mg.
The balance's typical settling time is approximately 0.8 seconds, allowing measurements to stabilize rapidly during repetitive weighing procedures. This can be particularly valuable in high-throughput laboratories where small reductions in individual weighing times can add up across dozens or hundreds of measurements.
The XSR4001S is therefore optimized less around extreme resolution and more around fast, reliable routine weighing of gram-to-kilogram quantities.
Maximum capacity and readability alone do not determine whether a balance is suitable for a particular quantitative procedure. Laboratories working under USP requirements should also consider the minimum sample weight necessary to achieve the required measurement uncertainty.
Mettler Toledo specifies a typical USP minimum sample weight of approximately 82 g for the XSR4001S under specified conditions. The manufacturer also specifies a typical minimum sample weight of approximately 8.2 g at k=2, U=1%.
Actual minimum weight can vary according to installation conditions, balance performance, environmental influences, measurement uncertainty requirements, and laboratory procedures.
For regulated or validated applications, laboratories should establish minimum weight according to their own qualification procedures and applicable quality requirements rather than relying exclusively on published typical values.
Although the XSR4001S is less sensitive to minor environmental disturbances than a microbalance or high-resolution analytical balance, air movement, vibration, temperature fluctuations, improper leveling, and unstable work surfaces can still affect weighing performance.
The XSR4001S incorporates Mettler Toledo's SmartPan weighing pan, which helps minimize the effects of air currents on the weighing cell. This allows the balance to maintain an open weighing surface rather than requiring the enclosed draft chamber normally associated with analytical and microbalances.
The open configuration makes it easier to position bottles, beakers, flasks, containers, and other laboratory vessels on the weighing pan and can improve efficiency during repetitive procedures.
For best performance, the XSR4001S should be installed on a rigid, level surface away from strong HVAC airflow, frequently opened doors, direct sunlight, centrifuges, shakers, compressors, and other equipment capable of transmitting vibration.
The XSR4001S incorporates Mettler Toledo's FACT automatic internal adjustment, helping maintain weighing performance as environmental conditions change.
Automatic internal adjustment can reduce reliance on manually initiated adjustment procedures and is particularly useful when ambient laboratory temperatures fluctuate during the working day.
Laboratories operating under GLP, GMP, USP, or internal quality systems may still require scheduled performance verification using appropriate traceable test weights and documented calibration procedures. Internal adjustment should therefore be considered one component of a complete balance quality-control program rather than a replacement for laboratory-specific calibration or qualification requirements.
The XSR4001S provides workflow and documentation capabilities that distinguish it from simpler precision balances.
Frequently performed procedures can be saved in the balance's method library, allowing operators to recall established parameters rather than configuring the balance from scratch for every weighing session. This can help standardize routine procedures and reduce variation between operators.
Weighing parameters and results can also be captured in the results notepad, with operators able to add relevant information or comments. Electronic connectivity allows data to be transferred to compatible computers, printers, barcode readers, and laboratory systems, reducing the need for manual transcription.
The XSR platform is also LabX compatible and supports data-integrity and 21 CFR Part 11 compliant workflows when incorporated into an appropriately configured and validated system.
For pharmaceutical, biotechnology, manufacturing, and quality-control laboratories, these capabilities can make the XSR4001S particularly useful where weighing results must be documented, transferred, reviewed, or incorporated into standardized procedures.

A precision balance and analytical balance are designed for different weighing priorities. Choosing the appropriate instrument depends on the smallest quantity that must be measured accurately, maximum sample and container weight, required measurement uncertainty, and laboratory workflow.
Analytical balances generally provide substantially finer readability—commonly 0.1 mg—but typically offer lower maximum capacities and require enclosed weighing chambers to minimize the effects of drafts and other environmental disturbances.
The XSR4001S instead provides 4.1 kg capacity with 0.1 g readability, giving laboratories substantially greater flexibility for weighing larger samples and containers.
For formulation, reagent preparation, sample preparation, ingredient weighing, and routine quantitative work involving gram-to-kilogram quantities, the XSR4001S may provide a faster and more practical solution than an analytical balance.
Laboratories that also routinely measure milligram-scale samples may benefit from maintaining both precision and analytical balances so that each procedure can be performed on an instrument appropriately matched to the required capacity and resolution.
This Mettler Toledo XSR4001S is unusual within the American Instrument Exchange inventory because it is unused and remains in its original packaging.
Rather than purchasing a balance that has previously operated in another laboratory and subsequently been refurbished, customers can acquire an unused XSR4001S that has not been placed into routine laboratory service.
This can be particularly attractive to laboratories that prefer unused equipment but are also looking for a cost-effective alternative to purchasing a current-generation balance directly through traditional new-equipment channels.
The XSR4001S itself has since been discontinued by Mettler Toledo, but it remains a capable Excellence-series precision balance with modern touchscreen operation, automatic internal adjustment, electronic connectivity, stored methods, and LabX com
