Overview

The Mettler Toledo MS3002TS is designed for laboratories that need greater capacity than a conventional analytical balance while still requiring hundredth-of-a-gram resolution. Its 3.2 kg capacity and 0.01 g readability make it a versatile choice for sample preparation, formulation, reagent weighing, quality control, and general quantitative laboratory work.

The MS-TS series combines Mettler Toledo's proven MonoBloc weighing cell with a large 7-inch color TFT touchscreen. The interface is designed for straightforward operation and can be used while wearing common cotton, silicone, or rubber laboratory gloves, helping users avoid unnecessary interruptions during sample handling.

The MS3002TS also incorporates FACT automatic internal adjustment, LevelControl leveling guidance, MiniWeigh functionality, password protection, and multiple connectivity options. These features provide a more sophisticated laboratory workflow than a basic top-loading balance while retaining the open weighing surface and easy sample access expected from a precision balance.

For laboratories that do not require the sub-milligram resolution of an analytical balance, the MS3002TS offers an effective combination of useful capacity, 10 mg readability, rapid stabilization, and convenient touchscreen operation.

Common Applications

The Mettler Toledo MS3002TS is well suited for routine laboratory weighing procedures involving samples, reagents, ingredients, containers, and other materials within its 3.2 kg capacity range.

Pharmaceutical and biotechnology laboratories can use the MS3002TS for formulation, media and buffer preparation, reagent preparation, component weighing, sample preparation, and quality-control procedures.

Chemical laboratories can use the balance for compound preparation, percentage weighing, formulation development, reagent preparation, and routine quantitative work. Its 3.2 kg capacity provides sufficient room for many samples to be weighed directly in beakers, bottles, flasks, and other laboratory vessels.

Food and beverage, cosmetics, materials science, environmental, academic, and industrial laboratories can also use the MS3002TS for ingredient weighing, sample preparation, quality testing, formulation, and other procedures requiring reliable 0.01 g resolution.

Ideal Laboratory Types

The MS3002TS is a strong choice for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, food and beverage, cosmetics, materials science, environmental, academic, manufacturing, industrial research, and quality-control laboratories.

Its combination of 3.2 kg capacity and 10 mg readability places it in a useful middle ground between high-resolution analytical balances and larger-capacity precision balances.

For many routine laboratory procedures, 0.01 g readability provides ample resolution while the 3.2 kg capacity leaves enough room for containers and tare weight. The open weighing pan also makes it easier to work with larger vessels than would typically be practical inside the enclosed draft shield of an analytical balance.

Precision Weighing Performance

The Mettler Toledo MS3002TS provides 10 mg (0.01 g) readability across its 3.2 kg weighing range, making it suitable for a broad range of quantitative laboratory procedures.

Mettler Toledo specifies typical repeatability of approximately 7 mg, with a repeatability limit value of 10 mg. Typical linearity deviation is approximately 6 mg, with a specified linearity deviation of 20 mg.

The balance has a typical settling time of approximately 1.5 seconds, allowing measurements to stabilize quickly during repetitive weighing procedures.

This combination of capacity, resolution, and speed makes the MS3002TS particularly useful for laboratories performing multiple weighing procedures throughout the day. It provides significantly finer resolution than ordinary bench scales while avoiding the lower capacities and more restrictive sample handling associated with analytical and microbalances.

Minimum Sample Weight & USP Applications

Maximum capacity and readability alone do not determine whether a balance is suitable for a particular quantitative procedure. Laboratories operating under USP requirements should also consider the minimum sample weight necessary to achieve the required measurement uncertainty.

Mettler Toledo specifies a typical USP minimum weight of approximately 14 g for the MS3002TS under specified conditions. The manufacturer also specifies a typical minimum weight of approximately 1.4 g at U=1%, k=2.

The MS3002TS also incorporates Mettler Toledo's MiniWeigh functionality, which can help operators recognize whether the current sample weight meets established minimum-weight requirements.

Actual minimum weight can vary according to installation conditions, balance performance, environmental influences, measurement uncertainty requirements, and laboratory procedures.

For regulated or validated applications, laboratories should establish minimum weight according to their own qualification procedures and applicable quality requirements rather than relying exclusively on published typical values.

Controlling Drafts, Vibration & Environmental Influences

Although the MS3002TS is less sensitive to minor environmental disturbances than a microbalance or high-resolution analytical balance, air movement, vibration, temperature fluctuations, unstable work surfaces, and improper leveling can still influence weighing accuracy and repeatability.

The balance's LevelControl system helps operators identify leveling problems and guides them through the leveling process. Proper leveling is particularly important when a precision balance is moved, repositioned, or installed at a new workstation.

The large open weighing pan provides convenient access for bottles, beakers, flasks, containers, and other laboratory vessels without requiring users to work inside a conventional draft chamber.

For best performance, the MS3002TS should be installed on a rigid, level surface away from strong HVAC airflow, frequently opened doors, direct sunlight, centrifuges, shakers, compressors, and other equipment capable of transmitting vibration.

Calibration & Internal Adjustment

The MS3002TS incorporates Mettler Toledo's FACT automatic internal adjustment, allowing the balance to automatically adjust its weighing system as operating conditions change.

Internal adjustment can help compensate for environmental influences such as temperature changes and reduces reliance on manually initiated adjustment procedures during routine laboratory operation.

American Instrument Exchange also performs external calibration as part of its balance testing procedure using NIST-traceable calibration weights.

Laboratories operating under GLP, GMP, USP, or internal quality systems may still require scheduled performance verification, documented calibration, and qualification according to their own procedures. Automatic internal adjustment should therefore be considered one component of a complete balance quality-control program rather than a substitute for laboratory-specific calibration requirements.

Touchscreen, User Management & Connectivity

One of the distinguishing features of the MS3002TS is its 7-inch color TFT touchscreen, which provides a substantially larger and more intuitive interface than conventional button-operated laboratory balances.

Large 18 mm digits make weighing results easy to read, while the touchscreen can be operated through common laboratory gloves. This can be particularly useful when the balance is incorporated into sample-preparation, formulation, or quality-control workflows where operators routinely wear personal protective equipment.

Password protection and user-management capabilities can help control access to balance settings and reduce unintended configuration changes.

The MS3002TS also provides extensive connectivity, including USB-A, USB-B, Ethernet/LAN, and RS232 interfaces, with optional Bluetooth connectivity available. These connections allow integration with compatible printers, computers, barcode readers, and other laboratory peripherals.

Electronic data transfer can reduce reliance on handwritten transcription and make the MS3002TS easier to incorporate into standardized laboratory workflows.

Choosing Between a Precision Balance and Analytical Balance

A precision balance and analytical balance are designed for different weighing priorities. Choosing between them depends on the smallest quantity that must be accurately measured, maximum combined sample and container weight, required measurement uncertainty, and laboratory workflow.

Analytical balances generally provide substantially finer readability—commonly 0.1 mg—but usually have lower maximum capacities and enclosed draft shields designed to protect sensitive measurements from air movement.

The MS3002TS provides 3.2 kg capacity with 0.01 g readability, trading extreme analytical sensitivity for greater capacity, a larger open weighing surface, and easier handling of containers and routine samples.

This makes the MS3002TS particularly appropriate for formulation, reagent preparation, sample preparation, ingredient weighing, and general quantitative work involving gram-to-kilogram quantities.

Laboratories performing both small-sample analytical measurements and larger preparation procedures may benefit from maintaining both analytical and precision balances so each weighing task can be performed on an instrument appropriately matched to the required capacity and resolution.

Refurbishment & Performance Testing

Every used Mettler Toledo MS3002TS sold by American Instrument Exchange is inspected, cleaned, refurbished as necessary, calibrated, and tested before shipment.

Because weighing performance is the primary function of a precision balance, testing goes beyond simply confirming that the instrument powers on and displays a stable weight. Our technicians use appropriate NIST-traceable test weights to evaluate critical performance characteristics including accuracy, repeatability, linearity, corner-load tolerances, and reduced span at or near full capacity.

The touchscreen, FACT internal adjustment system, weighing pan, leveling system, display, controls, and other installed features are also inspected and tested for proper operation.

Each refurbished MS3002TS includes a 90-day warranty from American Instrument Exchange.

Shipping & Installation Considerations

Precision balances are sensitive measuring instruments and should be carefully packaged and handled during transportation. The MS3002TS is securely prepared for shipment to protect its MonoBloc weighing system, weighing pan, touchscreen, and other components.

Once installed, the balance should be positioned on a rigid, level, vibration-resistant work surface in an area with reasonably stable temperature and minimal air movement. The LevelControl system can then assist with proper leveling before the balance is placed into service.

Allowing the instrument to acclimate to its laboratory environment before final calibration and routine use can help improve weighing consistency.

For laboratories performing critical or regulated measurements, installation should be followed by appropriate calibration, verification, or qualification procedures according to the laboratory's quality system.
