Overview

The Sartorius MA100Q is a high-accuracy thermogravimetric moisture analyzer designed to determine moisture by measuring sample mass before and during controlled infrared heating.

Rather than requiring a separate drying oven and balance, the MA100 integrates both functions into a single instrument.

A sample is placed on the weighing pan and heated according to a defined temperature and drying program. As moisture or other volatile components leave the sample, the integrated analytical weighing system continuously measures the change in mass.

The MA100 then uses this mass loss to calculate moisture content, dry matter, residual mass, or other selected results.

What distinguishes the MA100 from more basic moisture analyzers is its combination of 0.1 mg weighing resolution, extensive drying-program flexibility, automatic endpoint determination, method storage, and multiple available infrared heating technologies.

This MA100Q configuration uses the CQR coiled quartz radiator, which expands the operating temperature to 230°C.

Common Applications

The Sartorius MA100Q is well suited for moisture and dry-matter analysis in pharmaceutical, chemical, food, plastics, cosmetics, agricultural, environmental, materials-science, and industrial quality-control laboratories.

Food laboratories can use thermogravimetric moisture analysis for ingredients, powders, grains, starches, processed foods, dairy products, and other materials where water content affects product quality, storage stability, processing, or formulation.

Pharmaceutical and chemical laboratories may use the MA100Q for raw-material testing, powders, granulates, intermediates, formulations, and research samples.

Plastics and materials laboratories can use the high-temperature CQR system for polymers, resins, granulates, and other materials that benefit from higher drying temperatures.

Because methods can be stored and reproduced, the MA100 is particularly useful in laboratories that routinely analyze multiple sample types.

Ideal Laboratory Types

The MA100Q is particularly well suited for quality-control laboratories, pharmaceutical manufacturers, chemical companies, food and beverage laboratories, plastics manufacturers, cosmetics companies, agricultural laboratories, materials-science facilities, contract testing laboratories, universities, and research and development organizations.

It is especially useful when moisture analysis is performed frequently enough that conventional oven-loss-on-drying procedures become too slow or labor intensive.

The MA100 can provide moisture results within minutes while keeping weighing and drying within a controlled instrument workflow.

High-Accuracy Moisture Determination

The MA100 uses a high-resolution analytical weighing system capable of resolving mass changes to 0.1 mg.

This sensitivity allows the analyzer to detect relatively small changes in sample mass during drying and supports moisture measurements down to very low percentages under appropriate conditions.

The MA100 displays moisture results with resolution as fine as 0.001%.

This combination is particularly valuable when moisture represents only a small fraction of total sample mass.

Sartorius recommends typical sample quantities of approximately 5 to 15 g for many MA100 applications, although the integrated weighing system supports loads up to 100 g.

Understanding Thermogravimetric Moisture Analysis

The MA100 determines moisture using the loss-on-drying principle.

The instrument first establishes the initial mass of the sample.

The CQR infrared heater then raises the sample to the selected drying temperature.

As moisture and other volatile compounds leave the material, sample mass decreases. The analytical weighing system continuously monitors that change.

Once the selected endpoint criterion has been reached, the analyzer calculates and displays the result.

This approach can dramatically reduce analysis time compared with traditional drying-oven procedures, which may require separate weighing, extended oven exposure, cooling in a desiccator, and final weighing.

CQR Coiled Quartz Heating Technology

The MA100Q uses a CQR coiled quartz radiator as its infrared heating source.

This is an important distinction within the MA100 family.

Sartorius offered MA100 configurations with halogen, ceramic, and CQR infrared heating systems. Each provides different heating characteristics.

The CQR version is particularly notable for its high-temperature capability.

While MA100 halogen and ceramic configurations operate to approximately 180°C, the MA100Q CQR configuration extends the drying temperature to 230°C.

This can make the CQR model particularly useful for samples requiring higher drying temperatures or aggressive heating profiles.

30°C to 230°C Temperature Range

The MA100Q allows drying temperatures to be selected from 30°C to 230°C in 1°C increments.

The broad range gives laboratories considerable flexibility when developing methods for different sample types.

Temperature selection is critical in thermogravimetric moisture analysis.

Too low a temperature can result in incomplete drying or excessively long analysis times.

Excessive temperature can cause sample decomposition, oxidation, volatilization of compounds other than water, or other effects that distort the reported moisture result.

The MA100's programmable temperature control allows laboratories to optimize drying conditions for the material being analyzed.

Standard, Quick, Gentle & Phase Drying

The MA100Q supports several drying strategies rather than forcing every sample to use the same heating profile.

Standard drying provides a straightforward constant-temperature method for routine samples.

Quick drying can accelerate analysis for materials that tolerate more aggressive initial heating.

Gentle drying is useful for samples that may form a skin, scorch, decompose, or otherwise respond poorly to rapid heating.

Phase drying allows the method to progress through multiple temperature stages. This can be particularly useful for complex materials requiring one temperature during initial drying and another during later stages of the analysis.

This flexibility is one of the MA100's major advantages for laboratories analyzing diverse materials.

Automatic Endpoint Determination

Determining when a sample is actually dry is one of the central challenges in thermogravimetric moisture analysis.

The MA100 includes automatic endpoint searching and parameter-recognition functionality designed to help establish appropriate analysis conditions.

Rather than relying exclusively on a fixed drying time, the analyzer can monitor changes in sample mass and terminate analysis according to selected criteria.

Automatic endpoint determination can reduce unnecessary drying time while helping improve consistency between operators.

Fully automatic, semi-automatic, timed, and combined analysis modes provide additional flexibility when developing or reproducing established procedures.

Method Development & 30 Program Memories

Moisture analysis is highly sample dependent.

A method that works well for a powder may not be appropriate for a polymer, food product, liquid, paste, or pharmaceutical material.

The MA100 can store up to 30 programs, allowing laboratories to establish individual drying parameters for frequently tested materials.

Once an appropriate method has been developed, technicians can recall the stored program rather than recreating the temperature, drying mode, endpoint, and other parameters for every analysis.

This can improve repeatability while reducing operator-to-operator variation.

Sample Size & Repeatability

Sample quantity can have a significant effect on moisture-analysis precision and test duration.

Sartorius lists typical repeatability of approximately ±0.1% with an initial sample weight of about 1 g and approximately ±0.02% with a 5 g initial sample.

Larger representative samples can often improve repeatability because the measured moisture loss represents a larger absolute change in mass.

However, excessively thick samples may dry slowly or unevenly.

For many MA100 procedures, Sartorius identifies approximately 5 to 15 g as a typical sample quantity.

Samples should generally be distributed evenly across the pan to promote consistent heating and moisture release.

Result Display & Reporting

The MA100 can display analytical results in multiple formats depending on the laboratory procedure.

Available formats include percent moisture, percent dry weight or solids, ratio, milligram weight loss, grams of residue, grams per kilogram of residue, and calculated values using a conversion factor.

This flexibility allows the same analyzer to support different industries and reporting conventions without requiring users to manually convert every result after analysis.

Built-In reproTEST

The MA100 includes Sartorius reproTEST functionality for evaluating repeatability of the weighing system.

Repeatability is particularly important in moisture analysis because the final result depends on detecting relatively small changes in sample mass.

Built-in performance-check functionality gives laboratories an additional tool for evaluating the weighing system as part of routine quality procedures.

Memory & Statistical Data

The MA100 can retain statistical information from up to 9,999 measurements.

For laboratories conducting repetitive quality-control testing, stored statistical information can help operators review method consistency and identify changes in sample behavior.

Combined with program storage, this makes the MA100 more suitable for routine QC environments than a basic moisture analyzer designed primarily for individual standalone measurements.

Motorized Sample Chamber

The MA100 provides access to the sample chamber through a motorized cover.

This helps create a more controlled and repeatable workflow when inserting and removing sample pans.

Consistent handling can be particularly useful in repetitive quality-control procedures where differences in operator technique should be minimized.

Plug&Dry Heater System

The MA100 uses Sartorius Plug&Dry technology for its heating unit.

The heating unit can be exchanged, allowing the instrument platform to support different infrared heating technologies when appropriately configured.

This modular approach provides laboratories with additional flexibility if moisture-analysis requirements change.

Heater configuration and voltage compatibility should always be confirmed before replacing a heating module.

MA100 CQR vs. Halogen Moisture Analyzer

Sartorius offers the MA100 with different infrared heating technologies.

The MA100H uses a halogen heating element and provides a temperature range to approximately 180°C.

The MA100Q uses the CQR coiled quartz radiator and extends the maximum drying temperature to 230°C.

Halogen heating is a strong general-purpose choice for rapid moisture determination across many common laboratory samples.

The CQR configuration becomes particularly attractive for applications that require higher drying temperatures or specialized heating profiles.

Both configurations use the MA100's high-resolution weighing system and extensive moisture-analysis functionality.

MA100 vs. Conventional Drying-Oven Moisture Analysis

Traditional loss-on-drying procedures may require a sample to be weighed, placed in an oven for an extended period, removed, cooled in a desiccator, reweighed, and potentially returned to the oven until constant mass is achieved.

The MA100 integrates heating and weighing into a single instrument.

Because sample mass is monitored continuously during drying, the analyzer can recognize when the selected endpoint has been reached and report the result immediately.

This can reduce an hours-long procedure to minutes for suitable samples.

A moisture analyzer does not automatically replace every reference oven method, however. Laboratories should establish correlation between the MA100 method and the appropriate reference procedure when results must conform to a validated or standardized method.

Choosing a Moisture Analyzer Based on Sample Type

Selecting a moisture analyzer involves more than choosing the instrument with the highest temperature or finest resolution.

The sample itself determines the appropriate heating technology, drying temperature, sample quantity, endpoint criterion, and preparation technique.

Powders may behave differently from liquids, pastes, polymers, grains, foods, or pharmaceutical materials.

Some samples tolerate rapid high-temperature drying, while others require gentler heating to prevent decomposition or surface crust formation.

The MA100's multiple drying modes and programmable methods make it particularly useful for laboratories that analyze a broad range of materials rather than one consistent product.

Shipping & Installation Considerations

The MA100 contains both a high-resolution weighing system and an infrared heating system, so proper installation is important.

The analyzer should be installed on a rigid, level, vibration-resistant surface with sufficient clearance for ventilation and safe operation of the heating system.

Strong HVAC airflow, vibration from nearby centrifuges or shakers, and unstable work surfaces should be avoided.

The instrument should be connected to the correct electrical supply for its heater configuration. This MA100Q-000115V1 is the 115 V version.

Laboratories should allow the instrument to acclimate after installation and perform appropriate weighing and temperature verification before placing it into critical quality-control service.
