Baker SterilGARD e3 SG504 Refurbishment and Testing

American Instrument Exchange has extensive experience refurbishing used biosafety cabinets for laboratory and cleanroom environments.

Each biosafety cabinet is inspected by our technicians to verify proper blower operation, control functionality, airflow performance, lighting operation, cabinet integrity, and overall system condition prior to shipment. Unless otherwise specified, new HEPA filters are installed at our facility before delivery.

Testing procedures include major elements associated with biosafety cabinet certification to help support certification readiness upon installation at your facility. Final certification should be completed by qualified field technicians after installation in accordance with laboratory and facility requirements.

Certification Readiness

Biosafety cabinets should be certified by qualified field technicians after installation and before laboratory use.

American Instrument Exchange performs functional testing prior to shipment to support certification readiness upon arrival. Buyers should confirm facility compatibility, electrical requirements, airflow requirements, and certification standards prior to installation.

Certification services are available through our affiliate company:

·         https://www.aielaboratoryservices.com

Certification requirements may vary depending on laboratory protocols, facility standards, and application requirements.

Shipping and Installation Considerations

Biosafety cabinets are oversized laboratory instruments that may require special handling during transportation, delivery, and installation. Buyers should confirm laboratory access dimensions, doorway clearances, electrical compatibility, and final cabinet placement before shipment.

Depending on the installation environment, liftgate delivery, inside delivery services, rigging assistance, or coordinated facility access may be recommended.

Baker SterilGARD e3 SG504 Biosafety Cabinet – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Baker SterilGARD e3 SG504 biosafety cabinet?

The Baker SterilGARD e3 SG504 is a Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet designed to provide personnel, product, and environmental protection through controlled airflow and HEPA filtration. It meets NSF/ANSI 49 standards and is suitable for Biosafety Levels 1–3 applications including microbiology, virology, and pharmaceutical work.

If you’re not sure what type of biosafety cabinet you need – Type A2 or Type B2 – please contact either the sales team at American Instrument Exchange or the technicians at AIE Laboratory Services for more information and guidance.

How does the airflow system in the SG504 work?

Like all Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet, the Baker SG504 uses a vertical laminar airflow system with a carefully balanced recirculation pattern:

  • Room air enters at ~100–105 feet per minute through the front opening
  • HEPA-filtered air flows downward in a unidirectional stream
  • ~70% of air is recirculated; ~30% is exhausted through a HEPA filter
  • A momentum air curtain and high-velocity return slots enhance containment

This design ensures contaminants are captured while maintaining a sterile work area.

What level of filtration does the SG504 provide?

The cabinet uses dual HEPA filters (supply and exhaust) that are:

  • 99.99% efficient at 0.3 microns (most penetrating particle size)
  • Individually leak-tested before shipment
  • Designed for both product and environmental protection

This level of filtration is critical for maintaining sterile conditions in sensitive lab workflows.

What makes the SterilGARD e3 series unique compared to other biosafety cabinets?

The SG504 and other Baker x04 biosafety cabinets incorporate several proprietary technologies, including:

  • StediFLOW™ airflow system for consistent performance as filters load
  • UniPressure™ plenum design for stable airflow balance
  • Momentum air curtain for improved operator protection
  • High-velocity return air slots to capture contaminants quickly

These features work together to improve containment, reduce turbulence, and simplify certification.

How energy efficient is the SG504 biosafety cabinet?

The SterilGARD e3 platform is engineered for low energy consumption and reduced operating costs, offering:

  • Significant reductions in energy use compared to traditional cabinets
  • Lower heat output, improving lab comfort
  • Extended HEPA filter life due to optimized airflow

Some configurations report substantial annual energy savings due to efficient motor and airflow control systems.

Can the SG504 be ducted or used recirculating?

Yes. Like all Class II Type A2 cabinets, the SG504 can recirculate air back into the laboratory or connect to an external exhaust system via a canopy. This flexibility allows it to fit a wide range of lab designs and safety requirements.

What applications is the SG504 best suited for?

The SG504 is commonly used in cell and tissue culture, microbiology and virology labs,  clinical diagnostics, pharmaceutical and biotech research, and more. It is designed for applications requiring both contamination control and operator protection.

How easy is maintenance and certification?

The SterilGARD e3 is designed for simplified maintenance. Our repair technicians appreciate all of the features that make these units easy to maintain, including front-access HEPA filters for faster replacement, adjustable internal damper for airflow balancing, accessible components for certification testing. These features reduce downtime and service costs over the life of the cabinet.

Why buy a refurbished SG504 instead of new?

A professionally refurbished SG504 can deliver:

  • Significant cost savings compared to new units
  • Verified performance and tested airflow systems
  • Faster availability vs. long OEM lead times

When properly refurbished, these cabinets provide equivalent functional performance at a fraction of the cost.

Why choose American Instrument Exchange instead of an auction or unknown seller?

Not all “used biosafety cabinets” are equal. Buying from a trusted supplier like American Instrument Exchange helps ensure:

  • Verified HEPA filter integrity and airflow performance
  • Proper decontamination and cleaning
  • Functional alarms, controls, and safety systems
  • Reduced risk of certification failure after delivery

In contrast, auction equipment is often sold untested, uncertified, and without safety validation, which can lead to costly repairs or compliance issues.
