VACUUBRAND ME 4 NT Diaphragm Pump Overview

The VACUUBRAND ME 4 NT is engineered for laboratories that need significantly more pumping speed than a small single-station diaphragm pump, while still operating in the moderate-vacuum range.

Its single-stage construction provides an advantageous combination of high gas throughput and 70 mbar ultimate vacuum. At 60 Hz, maximum pumping speed reaches approximately 2.6 cfm, making the ME 4 NT especially useful for larger filtration setups, multi-port manifolds, parallel vacuum flasks, aspiration systems, and other laboratory applications where one pump must support several connections or evacuate equipment more rapidly.

VACUUBRAND uses two diaphragm heads to increase pumping capacity while retaining the simple, oil-free design of the ME series. Components in contact with pumped media include aluminum and selected plastics, making the ME 4 NT appropriate for a broad range of non-corrosive gases and vapors.

The NT-series design also emphasizes low noise, low vibration, high leak tightness, and extended diaphragm operating life, making the pump well suited for daily use in occupied laboratory environments.

Energy Efficiency & Operating Costs

The ME 4 NT uses a 180-watt motor and completely oil-free pumping mechanism. Because the pump does not require vacuum oil, laboratories eliminate oil changes, oil disposal, oil mist, and potential oil backstreaming into laboratory equipment.

Its relatively high pumping speed also allows one pump to support several compatible applications in parallel, which may be more efficient than dedicating multiple smaller pumps to separate filtration or aspiration stations.

The maintenance-free drive system and long-life FKM diaphragm construction help reduce routine service requirements and total lifetime operating costs. For laboratories currently relying on water aspirators, replacing water-driven vacuum with an electric diaphragm pump can also reduce continuous water consumption and wastewater generation.

Specifications compiled from current VACUUBRAND manufacturer literature and American Instrument Exchange product information.

Common Applications

The VACUUBRAND ME 4 NT is particularly well suited for vacuum filtration, membrane filtration, multi-port vacuum manifolds, aspiration, degassing, compatible vacuum ovens, gas transfer, oil-free evacuation, and multiple parallel laboratory vacuum applications.

Its 2.6 cfm pumping speed makes it especially useful where throughput matters more than deep ultimate vacuum.

Ideal Laboratory Types

The ME 4 NT is an excellent choice for analytical chemistry laboratories, microbiology facilities, biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical quality-control groups, environmental testing laboratories, wastewater laboratories, food and beverage testing facilities, university research laboratories, teaching laboratories, and industrial quality-control departments.

It is especially useful in facilities that want one compact vacuum pump to serve several filtration or sample-preparation stations.

High-Throughput Vacuum Filtration

Vacuum filtration is one of the strongest applications for the ME 4 NT.

The 2.6 cfm pumping speed at 60 Hz provides substantially more capacity than the ME 1 or ME 2 NT, allowing the ME 4 NT to evacuate larger filtration systems more quickly and maintain performance when multiple filter positions are operating.

Typical applications include:

  • Buchner funnel filtration

  • Membrane filtration

  • Microbiological filtration

  • Wastewater sample preparation

  • Environmental testing

  • Pharmaceutical quality-control filtration

  • Food and beverage testing

  • General analytical sample preparation

For laboratories performing filtration continuously or operating several filtration positions at once, the ME 4 NT provides a strong balance of pumping speed, compact size, and oil-free operation.

Multi-Port Vacuum Manifolds & Parallel Operation

The ME 4 NT is particularly well suited for multi-port manifolds and parallel laboratory applications.

Its 4.0 m³/h pumping speed at 50 Hz or 2.6 cfm at 60 Hz gives it enough capacity to support several compatible low-vacuum processes from one pump, depending on gas load, tubing size, leaks, and manifold design.

This can be useful for:

  • Multiple filtration stations

  • Solid-phase extraction manifolds

  • Aspiration systems

  • Sample preparation benches

  • Educational laboratory workstations

  • Multiple vacuum flasks

Using one higher-capacity pump can simplify bench layouts and reduce the number of individual pumps requiring power and maintenance.

ME 4 NT for Vacuum Ovens

The ME 4 NT can also support compatible vacuum ovens requiring moderate vacuum.

Reducing oven chamber pressure lowers the boiling temperature of moisture and other volatile compounds, allowing drying at reduced temperature. The ME 4 NT's relatively high pumping speed can help evacuate a compatible chamber quickly.

However, its ultimate pressure is 70 mbar, so it is not intended for vacuum ovens requiring deep vacuum. Users should verify the oven manufacturer's target pressure, chamber volume, vapor load, and recommended pumping speed before selecting the pump.

For deeper-vacuum drying applications, an MZ-series diaphragm pump or RZ rotary vane pump may be more appropriate.

Oil-Free Vacuum Technology

The ME 4 NT operates with a completely oil-free diaphragm mechanism.

This provides several practical advantages for routine laboratory work:

  • No vacuum pump oil changes

  • No contaminated-oil disposal

  • No oil mist

  • No oil backstreaming into laboratory apparatus

  • Reduced routine maintenance

  • Clean evacuation of compatible gases

For filtration, aspiration, manifolds, and general low-vacuum work, these advantages often make diaphragm pumps easier to operate than traditional oil-sealed vacuum pumps.

Quiet Operation & Low Vibration

Despite its increased pumping capacity, VACUUBRAND specifies a sound pressure level of approximately 45 dBA for the ME 4 NT.

The NT-series design also emphasizes very low vibration. These characteristics make the pump particularly attractive for laboratories where vacuum equipment operates close to personnel or sensitive benchtop instrumentation.

ME 4 NT vs. ME 2 NT

The ME 2 NT and ME 4 NT share the same 70 mbar ultimate vacuum, but the ME 4 NT provides substantially greater pumping speed.

The ME 2 NT provides approximately 1.4 cfm at 60 Hz.

The ME 4 NT provides approximately 2.6 cfm at 60 Hz.

For a small number of filtration positions or modest gas loads, the ME 2 NT may be sufficient. For higher-throughput filtration, larger manifolds, or more simultaneous applications, the ME 4 NT offers a significant capacity advantage.

ME 4 NT vs. ME 1

The ME 1 is a compact pump designed primarily for an individual filtration station and delivers approximately 0.5 cfm at 60 Hz.

The ME 4 NT delivers more than five times that pumping speed while maintaining a 70 mbar ultimate vacuum.

For a single filtration flask, the ME 1 remains an economical choice. For shared vacuum infrastructure or multiple simultaneous applications, the ME 4 NT is much better suited.

ME 4 NT vs. MZ 2C NT

The ME 4 NT and MZ 2C NT serve very different priorities.

The ME 4 NT emphasizes pumping speed, delivering 2.6 cfm at 60 Hz but reaching only 70 mbar.

The MZ 2C NT emphasizes deeper vacuum and chemical resistance, reaching approximately 7 mbar with lower pumping speed.

The ME 4 NT is the stronger choice for high-throughput filtration and parallel low-vacuum applications involving compatible non-corrosive gases. The MZ 2C NT is better suited for solvent evaporation, chemical vapors, concentration, and processes requiring substantially deeper vacuum.

ME 4 NT vs. MD 4 NT

The ME 4 NT and MD 4 NT illustrate another important distinction within VACUUBRAND's diaphragm pump lineup.

The ME 4 NT is a single-stage, two-head pump optimized for higher throughput at moderate vacuum, reaching 70 mbar.

The MD 4 NT uses four heads and three stages and reaches approximately 1 mbar, making it much better suited for deep-vacuum diaphragm applications and as a backing pump for some turbomolecular systems.

For filtration and manifolds, the ME 4 NT is typically the better fit. For applications requiring much lower pressure, the MD 4 NT provides significantly greater vacuum depth.

Recommended Laboratory Applications

The VACUUBRAND ME 4 NT is recommended for:

  • High-throughput vacuum filtration

  • Multi-port vacuum manifolds

  • Membrane filtration

  • Buchner funnel filtration

  • Aspiration systems

  • Solid-phase extraction

  • Multiple parallel laboratory vacuum applications

  • Compatible vacuum ovens

  • Degassing

  • Gas transfer

  • Oil-free evacuation

  • Environmental testing

  • Wastewater analysis

  • Microbiology workflows

  • General laboratory vacuum

Application suitability should always be evaluated according to required ultimate pressure, gas load, chemical compatibility, manifold design, and process conditions.

Why Choose the VACUUBRAND ME 4 NT?

The ME 4 NT is an excellent choice when a laboratory needs more pumping speed rather than deeper vacuum.

Its combination of 2.6 cfm pumping speed, 70 mbar ultimate vacuum, two-head design, 180-watt motor, oil-free operation, 45 dBA sound level, and compact footprint makes it particularly effective for shared filtration systems and multiple low-vacuum applications.

For laboratories that have outgrown the ME 1 or ME 2 NT but do not need the deep vacuum of an MZ or MD-series pump, the ME 4 NT fills that gap cleanly.
