VACUUBRAND ME 4C NT Chemistry Diaphragm Pump Overview

The VACUUBRAND ME 4C NT is engineered for laboratories that require substantial pumping speed combined with chemical resistance.

Its two diaphragm heads are arranged in a single pumping stage, allowing the pump to move relatively large volumes of gas while maintaining an ultimate pressure of approximately 70 mbar / 52 Torr. At 60 Hz, the ME 4C NT provides up to 2.6 cfm of pumping speed, making it particularly useful for medium- and high-throughput laboratory vacuum applications.

Unlike the standard ME 4 NT, the ME 4C NT is specifically configured as a chemistry diaphragm pump. Its wetted components are selected for resistance to aggressive gases and vapors, allowing the pump to operate in chemical workflows where a general-purpose diaphragm pump would be inappropriate.

The combination of chemical resistance and relatively high pumping speed makes the ME 4C NT particularly attractive for parallel vacuum filtration, vacuum manifolds, aspiration systems, chemical sample preparation, evacuation, and other applications where several vacuum connections may operate simultaneously.

Energy Efficiency & Operating Costs

The ME 4C NT uses a 180-watt motor and completely oil-free diaphragm pumping mechanism. Because there is no vacuum pump oil, laboratories eliminate routine oil changes, contaminated-oil disposal, oil mist, and oil backstreaming.

This is particularly valuable when handling chemical vapors. Solvent and reagent vapors can contaminate oil in rotary vane pumps, leading to degraded vacuum performance and more frequent maintenance. The ME 4C NT avoids this issue entirely through its oil-free diaphragm design.

Its relatively high pumping capacity can also allow one pump to support several compatible vacuum applications through a properly designed manifold, potentially eliminating the need for multiple smaller pumps at individual workstations.

The maintenance-free drive system and long diaphragm service life further help reduce routine service requirements and lifetime ownership costs.

Specifications compiled from current VACUUBRAND manufacturer literature and American Instrument Exchange product information.

Common Applications

The VACUUBRAND ME 4C NT is particularly well suited for chemical vacuum filtration, multi-port vacuum manifolds, aspiration, solid-phase extraction, evacuation, degassing, gas transfer, and continuous pumping of corrosive gases and vapors.

Its relatively high pumping speed makes the ME 4C NT especially useful when several moderate-vacuum processes must operate simultaneously or when large gas volumes need to be evacuated efficiently.

Ideal Laboratory Types

The ME 4C NT is an excellent choice for pharmaceutical laboratories, biotechnology companies, analytical chemistry facilities, environmental testing laboratories, organic chemistry groups, university research facilities, contract research organizations, quality-control laboratories, and industrial R&D departments.

It is especially useful in laboratories that need shared chemically resistant vacuum infrastructure rather than a separate pump at every filtration or aspiration station.

High-Throughput Chemical Vacuum Filtration

Vacuum filtration is one of the strongest applications for the ME 4C NT.

Its 2.6 cfm pumping speed at 60 Hz provides substantial gas-handling capacity for filtration manifolds and multi-position filtration systems.

Typical applications may include:

  • Chemical sample filtration

  • Membrane filtration

  • Buchner funnel filtration

  • Environmental sample preparation

  • Pharmaceutical filtration

  • Solvent-resistant filtration assemblies

  • Solid-phase extraction

  • Multi-position vacuum manifolds

For laboratories filtering samples containing aggressive reagents or solvent vapors, the ME 4C NT provides an important advantage over the standard ME 4 NT because its wetted components are specifically designed for chemistry applications.

Multi-Port Vacuum Manifolds & Parallel Applications

The ME 4C NT is particularly useful as a shared vacuum source for multiple laboratory stations.

Its 2.6 cfm pumping speed allows one pump to support several compatible moderate-vacuum processes through a properly sized manifold.

Potential applications include:

  • Multiple filtration stations

  • Aspiration lines

  • Solid-phase extraction manifolds

  • Parallel sample-preparation stations

  • Vacuum transfer operations

  • Laboratory teaching stations

Actual performance at each connection will depend on tubing diameter, manifold design, gas load, leaks, and the number of open vacuum ports.

Chemical Resistance & Vapor Handling

Chemical resistance is the defining difference between the ME 4C NT and standard ME 4 NT.

The ME 4C NT is designed specifically as a chemistry diaphragm pump, with wetted components selected for resistance to aggressive gases and vapors.

This makes the pump well suited for applications where vacuum lines may be exposed to solvents, reagent vapors, or other chemically demanding process gases.

Because the pump operates without oil, process vapors cannot contaminate an oil reservoir as they would in a conventional rotary vane pump.

Chemical compatibility should always be confirmed for the exact substances, concentrations, temperatures, and operating conditions involved.

Oil-Free Vacuum for Chemical Laboratories

Oil-free diaphragm technology provides several important benefits in chemistry environments:

  • No vacuum pump oil changes

  • No solvent-contaminated oil disposal

  • No oil mist

  • No oil backstreaming

  • Reduced routine maintenance

  • Clean vacuum generation

  • Improved suitability for corrosive-vapor workflows

For moderate-vacuum processes, these advantages can make the ME 4C NT substantially easier to operate than an oversized oil-sealed vacuum pump.

ME 4C NT vs. ME 4 NT

The ME 4C NT and ME 4 NT provide nearly identical basic vacuum performance, but they are designed for different gas streams.

Both provide approximately 2.6 cfm pumping speed at 60 Hz and reach approximately 70 mbar ultimate vacuum.

The ME 4 NT is a general-purpose diaphragm pump intended for compatible non-corrosive gases and vapors.

The ME 4C NT is the chemistry-resistant version, designed for applications involving more aggressive gases, solvent vapors, and chemically demanding laboratory processes.

For ordinary filtration and aspiration where corrosive vapor exposure is not expected, the ME 4 NT may be sufficient. For chemical applications, the ME 4C NT provides the appropriate material compatibility.

ME 4C NT vs. ME 2 NT

The ME 2 NT provides lower pumping capacity and is a general-purpose pump.

The ME 2 NT delivers approximately 1.4 cfm at 60 Hz and reaches 70 mbar.

The ME 4C NT delivers approximately 2.6 cfm at 60 Hz while providing chemistry-resistant construction.

For medium-throughput non-corrosive applications, the ME 2 NT may be adequate. For higher-throughput applications involving chemical vapors, the ME 4C NT provides significantly greater capability.

ME 4C NT vs. ME 1C

The ME 1C and ME 4C NT are both chemistry-resistant diaphragm pumps but occupy very different throughput classes.

The ME 1C provides approximately 0.5 cfm at 60 Hz and reaches about 100 mbar, making it an excellent dedicated pump for a single filtration station.

The ME 4C NT provides approximately 2.6 cfm and reaches 70 mbar, allowing it to support much larger gas loads and multiple parallel applications.

For one workstation, the ME 1C may be the more compact and economical solution. For shared chemical vacuum, multi-port manifolds, or high-throughput filtration, the ME 4C NT is substantially more capable.

ME 4C NT vs. MZ 2C NT

The ME 4C NT and MZ 2C NT illustrate the tradeoff between pumping speed and vacuum depth.

The ME 4C NT delivers approximately 2.6 cfm at 60 Hz but reaches 70 mbar.

The MZ 2C NT delivers approximately 1.4 cfm but reaches 7 mbar.

Both are chemistry-resistant oil-free diaphragm pumps.

For high-throughput filtration, aspiration, and parallel moderate-vacuum processes, the ME 4C NT is generally the stronger choice.

For rotary evaporation, vacuum concentration, solvent evaporation, and applications requiring substantially lower pressure, the MZ 2C NT is better suited.

ME 4C NT vs. MD 4C NT

The difference becomes even more pronounced when comparing the ME 4C NT with the MD 4C NT.

The ME 4C NT uses two heads and one stage, prioritizing gas throughput and reaching approximately 70 mbar.

The MD 4C NT uses four heads arranged across three stages and reaches approximately 1.5 mbar, making it a much deeper-vacuum chemistry diaphragm pump.

The ME 4C NT is optimized for high-throughput moderate vacuum. The MD 4C NT is designed for more demanding evaporation, high-boiling solvent, and deep chemical vacuum applications.

ME 4C NT +2AK Upgrade Option

VACUUBRAND also offers the ME 4C NT as a complete ME 4C NT +2AK chemistry vacuum system.

That configuration adds an inlet separator to help protect the pump from particles and liquid droplets, along with an outlet separator for condensate collection.

For laboratories expecting significant liquid carryover or condensate loads, the +2AK configuration may provide additional process protection.

The standard ME 4C NT remains a strong choice where external traps, separators, or laboratory vacuum infrastructure are already available.

Recommended Laboratory Applications

The VACUUBRAND ME 4C NT is recommended for:

  • High-throughput chemical vacuum filtration

  • Multi-port vacuum manifolds

  • Parallel filtration stations

  • Aspiration systems

  • Solid-phase extraction

  • Environmental sample preparation

  • Pharmaceutical sample preparation

  • Chemical sample filtration

  • Degassing

  • Evacuation

  • Chemical-vapor pumping

  • Gas transfer

  • Shared laboratory vacuum systems

  • General moderate-vacuum chemistry applications

Application suitability should always be evaluated according to required ultimate pressure, pumping speed, chemical compatibility, gas load, manifold design, and process conditions.

Why Choose the VACUUBRAND ME 4C NT?

The ME 4C NT is particularly compelling when a laboratory needs both high gas throughput and chemical resistance but does not require deep vacuum.

Its combination of:

  • 2.6 cfm pumping speed

  • 70 mbar ultimate vacuum

  • Two-head design

  • Chemistry-resistant wetted components

  • Oil-free operation

  • 180-watt motor

  • Approximately 45 dBA sound level

  • Compact 10.0" × 9.6" × 7.8" footprint

makes it especially well suited for shared chemical filtration and manifold applications.

Rather than using a deeper-vacuum pump that provides unnecessary ultimate pressure but less gas throughput, laboratories can select the ME 4C NT when flow capacity is the more important performance requirement.
