Thermo Scientific 1347 Class II Type A2 Biosafety Cabinet
Refurbished Thermo Scientific 1347 Biosafety Cabinet for Sale
The Thermo Scientific 1347 is a large 6-foot Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet designed to provide personnel, product, and environmental protection for cell culture, biotechnology, pharmaceutical research, microbiology, clinical research, and other contamination-sensitive biological applications. Part of Thermo Scientific's 1300 Series A2 platform, the 1347 combines a spacious 6-foot work chamber with a 10-inch working sash opening, one-piece 304 stainless steel interior, intelligent airflow management, and energy-efficient brushless DC motor technology.
The 1347 is particularly well suited to laboratories that need more working room than a conventional 4-foot BSC can provide. With approximately six feet of interior width, researchers have substantially more space for culture vessels, media bottles, sample racks, pipettes, aspiration equipment, and appropriately sized instruments while maintaining an organized workflow inside the cabinet.
A defining feature of the Thermo 1347 is its 10-inch working sash opening. Within Thermo's cabinet-only 1300 Series lineup, the 1347 is the 6-foot, 120V, one-piece stainless steel configuration with the larger 10-inch work aperture. This distinguishes it from the Thermo 1307, which uses the same basic 6-foot stainless steel platform with an 8-inch working opening.
The one-piece 304 stainless steel interior provides a durable, cleanable work chamber well suited to frequent laboratory use. Combined with the large work surface and increased vertical access of the 10-inch opening, this makes the 1347 particularly attractive for high-throughput cell culture and other procedures requiring substantial working room.
The 1300 Series also incorporates independent supply and exhaust blower control, real-time airflow monitoring, brushless DC motor technology, energy-saving reduced-flow operation, and an ergonomic 10° sloped front designed to improve operator comfort during extended procedures.

Overview
The Thermo Scientific 1347 combines the biological containment capabilities of a Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet with the substantial working area of a 6-foot platform.
During operation, inward airflow through the front opening helps protect personnel from aerosols generated within the work chamber. HEPA-filtered vertical downflow helps protect samples and materials from airborne contamination, while exhaust air passes through HEPA filtration before leaving the cabinet.
Thermo's 1300 Series A2 airflow system uses independent supply and exhaust blower control to help maintain the appropriate relationship between downflow and inflow/exhaust velocities. The cabinet's monitoring system provides operators with information about airflow performance and warns when operating conditions move outside appropriate parameters.
The 1347's size is an important advantage. A 4-foot BSC is sufficient for many routine procedures, but laboratories performing higher-throughput work or using larger experimental setups can quickly consume the available work surface.
With a 6-foot 1347, researchers have substantially more horizontal space to organize materials and establish logical work zones while avoiding unnecessary crowding of the chamber.
The 10-inch operating aperture further increases access to the work area, making the 1347 a particularly useful configuration for laboratories that want both the larger 6-foot chamber and greater vertical access.
Why Choose the Thermo Scientific 1347?
The Thermo Scientific 1347 is particularly well suited to laboratories seeking a 6-foot Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet with a stainless steel interior and 10-inch working opening.
Those three characteristics provide a useful combination for demanding biological workflows.
The 6-foot chamber provides additional horizontal workspace for larger sample batches, multiple culture vessels, media containers, racks, pipettes, aspiration systems, and appropriately sized equipment.
The 10-inch operating opening provides greater vertical access than an 8-inch configuration, making it easier to introduce larger materials into the work chamber and providing a more open working configuration for researchers who prefer the additional access.
The one-piece 304 stainless steel chamber provides a durable interior appropriate for laboratories where frequent cleaning and disinfection are part of normal operation.
For facilities comparing several refurbished Thermo 1300 Series cabinets, these distinctions are important. Models that appear nearly identical externally can differ in width, sash opening, interior construction, voltage, and factory accessory configuration.
The 1347 occupies a specific position in that lineup: 6-foot width, 10-inch opening, one-piece stainless steel interior, and 120V electrical configuration.
Thermo Scientific 1347 vs. Thermo Scientific 1307
The Thermo 1347 and Thermo 1307 are closely related 6-foot Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinets.
Both use the one-piece stainless steel interior and the same basic 6-foot 1300 Series A2 platform. Both are also 120V configurations.
The key difference is the working sash opening.
The Thermo 1347 has a 10-inch working opening, while the Thermo 1307 has an 8-inch working opening.
The 1347 may therefore be preferable for laboratories that want greater vertical access to the work chamber, routinely transfer taller materials into the BSC, or simply prefer the ergonomics of a 10-inch opening.
The 1307 may be preferable when replacing an existing 8-inch-opening cabinet or when a laboratory has standardized its BSCs around that operating configuration.
For refurbished-equipment buyers, this comparison is particularly useful because the cabinets otherwise share many of the same characteristics.
Thermo Scientific 1347 vs. Thermo Scientific 1357
The Thermo 1347 and Thermo 1357 provide another useful comparison.
Both are 6-foot, 120V, Class II Type A2 cabinet-only configurations with a 10-inch working opening.
The primary difference is the interior construction.
The Thermo 1347 uses a one-piece stainless steel interior, while the Thermo 1357 uses Thermo's SmartCoat interior.
For laboratories specifically seeking stainless steel chamber construction, the 1347 is the appropriate configuration. Laboratories that prefer SmartCoat may instead consider the 1357.
This distinction can be especially important when replacing an existing cabinet or standardizing several BSCs within the same laboratory.
Thermo Scientific 1347 vs. Thermo Scientific 1377
The Thermo 1347 and Thermo 1377 are both 6-foot, 120V Class II Type A2 cabinets with one-piece stainless steel interiors and 10-inch working openings.
The primary difference is how Thermo originally sold the configurations.
The 1347 is the cabinet-only catalog configuration, allowing stands and accessories to be selected separately. The 1377 was sold as a package that included the cabinet along with an adjustable-height stand, UV light, and armrests.
For refurbished equipment, the original package designation does not necessarily determine what accessories are included today. Individual cabinets may have been reconfigured during their service lives.
This particular refurbished Thermo 1347 from American Instrument Exchange includes a stand. Customers should confirm any additional accessories required for their application when requesting a quote.
10-Inch Working Sash Opening
The Thermo 1347 is specifically designed around a 10-inch working window position.
Compared with an 8-inch-opening cabinet, the additional vertical access can make it easier to transfer larger vessels, racks, instruments, and other appropriate materials into and out of the work chamber.
The larger opening can also be useful when setting up complex workflows that involve numerous materials inside the BSC.
The working opening is part of the cabinet's airflow design, however, and should not be confused with simply raising the sash of an 8-inch cabinet farther than its designated operating position.
Thermo specifies an inflow velocity of approximately 105 feet per minute for the 1300 Series A2 platform, with approximately 63 feet per minute of downflow. For a 6-foot cabinet with a 10-inch opening, Thermo specifies approximately 1,249 CFM of overall airflow and approximately 517 CFM of HEPA-filtered exhaust airflow.
Following installation, the cabinet should be field certified at its designated working sash position before being placed into biological service.
Large 6-Foot Workspace
The Thermo 1347 provides substantially more working room than a conventional 4-foot biosafety cabinet.
This additional space can be valuable for laboratories processing larger sample batches, performing high-throughput cell culture, or using workflows that require numerous vessels, racks, media containers, pipettes, aspiration equipment, and other materials inside the containment area.
The larger chamber also provides greater flexibility for establishing organized work zones.
Rather than placing every item directly in front of the operator, researchers can maintain clearer separation between clean materials, active procedures, and waste while still preserving appropriate airflow pathways.
The additional workspace should not be viewed as an invitation to overcrowd the BSC. Front and rear airflow grilles must remain unobstructed, and equipment placed inside the cabinet should be evaluated for its potential effect on airflow.
When a workflow genuinely requires the additional room, however, a 6-foot cabinet such as the Thermo 1347 can provide a substantial advantage over smaller BSCs.
Energy Efficiency & Airflow Management
The Thermo 1300 Series A2 platform incorporates brushless DC motor technology designed to improve energy efficiency while maintaining dependable airflow performance.
Independent supply and exhaust blower control helps maintain the relationship between downflow and protective inflow as operating conditions change.
The SmartFlow indicator provides a visual indication of the cabinet's available airflow-compensation capacity, while audible and visual alarms alert the operator when conditions such as airflow or sash position move outside acceptable limits.
The cabinet also incorporates reduced-flow operation when the sash is closed. Rather than continuously operating the blowers at full working speed when the BSC is not being actively used, the system can reduce blower speed substantially.
For laboratories operating several large BSCs, reducing unnecessary blower operation can contribute to lower electrical consumption, reduced heat output, and slower HEPA filter loading.
These characteristics are particularly relevant for a 6-foot cabinet, where airflow volumes and associated operating costs are greater than those of smaller BSCs.
Operator Comfort & Ergonomics
The Thermo 1347 incorporates several features intended to improve comfort during extended laboratory procedures.
A 10° sloped front provides a more ergonomic working position, while the 10-inch sash opening offers generous vertical access to the chamber.
The large unobstructed work area allows researchers to distribute materials across the chamber rather than crowding equipment immediately in front of the operator.
Thermo specifies an operating noise level of approximately 65 dBA for this 6-foot platform, helping reduce distraction in laboratories where BSCs may operate for long periods.
For laboratories where researchers spend several hours each day performing cell culture or other repetitive biological procedures, these ergonomic characteristics can become an important part of equipment selection.
Common Applications
The Thermo Scientific 1347 is well suited to mammalian cell and tissue culture, stem cell research, microbiology, molecular biology, virology, vaccine development, biotechnology research, pharmaceutical research and development, cell and gene therapy workflows, clinical research, sample preparation, and other applications requiring Class II Type A2 containment.
Its large 6-foot workspace can be particularly useful for higher-throughput cell culture, procedures involving numerous samples or culture vessels, and workflows requiring more equipment or materials than can be comfortably accommodated inside a smaller BSC.
Ideal Laboratory Environments
The Thermo Scientific 1347 is particularly well suited for biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical laboratories, cell and gene therapy facilities, vaccine-development laboratories, contract research organizations, university research facilities, hospital and clinical research laboratories, government laboratories, and other life-science organizations requiring a large Class II Type A2 containment workstation.
Its combination of a 6-foot chamber, 10-inch operating opening, stainless steel interior, intelligent airflow management, and energy-efficient motor technology makes the 1347 particularly attractive for laboratories performing substantial amounts of biological work each day.
Compatible Laboratory Equipment
The Thermo Scientific 1347 fits naturally into cell culture, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, microbiology, and clinical research workflows.
For cell culture applications, the 1347 can be paired with CO₂ incubators for maintaining cultures, refrigerated centrifuges for harvesting and processing samples, laboratory refrigerators for media and reagent storage, and ultra-low temperature freezers for long-term preservation of biological materials.
Inverted microscopes, laboratory autoclaves, water baths, cryogenic storage systems, and additional biosafety cabinets can further support complete research workflows.
