Fiberlite F14-6x250y Rotor Overview

The Fiberlite F14-6x250y was developed for laboratories requiring substantial sample capacity together with high centrifugal force.

Each of its six cavities accommodates a compatible 250 mL centrifuge bottle, allowing up to 1.5 liters of nominal sample volume per run.

At its maximum speed of 14,000 rpm, the rotor generates approximately 30,000 x g, placing it well above the centrifugal-force range of many conventional large-capacity swinging-bucket and general-purpose rotors.

This combination makes the F14-6x250y especially attractive for workflows involving larger biological samples that still require efficient pelleting or clarification.

Rather than processing a large culture or homogenate through numerous 50 mL tubes, laboratories can divide material among six 250 mL bottles and process considerably more volume during each centrifugation cycle.

Important: The Fiberlite F14-6x250y has been manufactured in several centrifuge-specific configurations over its production history. Exact catalog number, drive interface, dimensions, accessories, and centrifuge compatibility should be confirmed from the identification markings on the individual rotor before installation.

Common Applications

The Fiberlite F14-6x250y is well suited for cell harvesting, bacterial and yeast pelleting, biomass recovery, lysate clarification, tissue homogenate processing, subcellular fractionation, ammonium sulfate protein precipitation, enzyme preparation, plant tissue homogenization, biomolecule isolation, and other medium-volume high-speed centrifugation procedures.

Its 1.5-liter nominal capacity makes it particularly useful for workflows in which larger batches must be processed efficiently without sacrificing the centrifugal force available from a superspeed fixed-angle rotor.

Ideal Laboratory Types

The Fiberlite F14-6x250y is an excellent rotor for biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical research laboratories, fermentation laboratories, microbiology facilities, molecular biology groups, protein purification laboratories, plant biology laboratories, university research facilities, contract research organizations, process-development laboratories, and industrial R&D operations.

It is particularly valuable for laboratories moving beyond small-volume 15 mL and 50 mL sample processing into 250 mL batch centrifugation.

6 x 250 mL High-Speed Capacity

The defining advantage of the F14-6x250y is its ability to combine large 250 mL vessels with superspeed centrifugal force.

Six 250 mL positions provide a total nominal capacity of:

1,500 mL per rotor load

For laboratories processing bacterial cultures, yeast cultures, cell suspensions, homogenates, lysates, or precipitated proteins, this can substantially reduce the number of centrifugation cycles required compared with smaller rotors.

For example, processing 1.5 liters using conventional 50 mL tubes could require up to thirty individual tubes.

The F14-6x250y can handle the same nominal volume in six 250 mL bottles.

This can simplify sample preparation, balancing, loading, unloading, and downstream pellet recovery.

14,000 rpm / Approximately 30,000 x g Performance

At maximum speed, the F14-6x250y reaches 14,000 rpm and produces approximately 30,240 x g.

This provides sufficient centrifugal force for many separation procedures that cannot be completed efficiently using standard low-speed bottle rotors.

The combination is especially useful for:

  • Cell pelleting

  • Bacterial harvesting

  • Yeast harvesting

  • Dense biomass recovery

  • Protein precipitation

  • Lysate clarification

  • Homogenate clarification

  • Subcellular fractionation

Actual operating speed should always remain within the lowest permitted rating of the rotor, centrifuge, bottle, closure, adapter, and any other component used in the system.

23° Fixed-Angle Rotor Geometry

The F14-6x250y uses a 23-degree fixed-angle design.

During centrifugation, suspended particles move outward through the sample toward the outer wall and bottom of each vessel.

Compared with many swinging-bucket geometries, the relatively short sedimentation path of a fixed-angle rotor supports efficient pellet formation.

This makes the F14-6x250y especially useful for applications where the primary goal is to:

  • Pellet cells

  • Collect precipitated proteins

  • Clarify lysates

  • Remove tissue debris

  • Harvest microorganisms

  • Separate dense suspended material

After the run, the supernatant can generally be poured or aspirated away while the pellet remains concentrated along the lower outer side of the vessel.

Cell Harvesting & Biomass Recovery

One of the most natural applications for the F14-6x250y is harvesting cells from relatively large culture volumes.

Potential sample types include:

Bacterial cultures
Yeast cultures
Fermentation samples
Compatible cultured-cell suspensions
Microbial biomass

The six 250 mL positions allow larger batches to be processed with fewer individual vessels than would be required with 50 mL tubes.

This can make the rotor particularly useful for protein-expression laboratories, microbiology groups, fermentation research, and biotechnology process development.

Lysate Clarification

After cells have been disrupted, centrifugation is commonly used to separate insoluble cellular debris from soluble proteins, nucleic acids, and other target molecules.

The F14-6x250y's combination of large volume and approximately 30,000 x g maximum RCF makes it well suited for clarification of larger lysate batches.

Rather than dividing a lysate across numerous small tubes, laboratories can process the material in larger compatible 250 mL bottles.

This can be particularly useful during recombinant protein production, biochemical purification, and scale-up studies.

Protein & Enzyme Precipitation

The F14-6x250y is also well suited for ammonium sulfate precipitation and other compatible protein-precipitation workflows.

During ammonium sulfate fractionation, proteins are precipitated from solution according to their solubility characteristics.

Centrifugation is then used to collect the precipitated material.

A six-position 250 mL rotor allows relatively large protein preparations to be processed efficiently, making the F14-6x250y useful for protein purification, enzymology, biochemistry, and pharmaceutical research.

Tissue & Plant Homogenate Processing

Large tissue homogenates can contain substantial quantities of suspended fibers, cell fragments, organelles, and other insoluble material.

The F14-6x250y provides both the vessel volume and centrifugal force required to process these samples effectively.

Potential applications include:

  • Plant tissue homogenates

  • Animal tissue homogenates

  • Agricultural biotechnology

  • Natural-products research

  • Pharmaceutical extraction

  • Food-science research

  • Biochemical fractionation

Its 250 mL vessel format is particularly helpful when sample preparation generates more material than can be conveniently processed in conventional conical tubes.

Carbon Fiber Composite Construction

The F14-6x250y belongs to the Fiberlite family of carbon fiber centrifuge rotors.

Carbon fiber composite provides a very high strength-to-weight ratio and avoids several drawbacks associated with conventional aluminum centrifuge rotors.

Important advantages include:

  • Reduced rotor weight

  • Corrosion resistance

  • Fatigue resistance

  • Easier rotor handling

  • Reduced operator lifting burden

  • Cold-room compatibility

  • Durable high-speed construction

These characteristics contributed to Fiberlite becoming a widely used rotor platform in high-speed laboratory centrifugation.

Corrosion Resistance

Corrosion is one of the major concerns associated with long-term use of traditional aluminum centrifuge rotors.

Moisture, spills, buffers, salts, detergents, and chemical exposure can damage metallic surfaces.

Because a centrifuge rotor experiences very high mechanical stresses during operation, corrosion is more than a cosmetic issue. Significant deterioration can compromise structural integrity.

Fiberlite's carbon fiber composite construction is inherently resistant to the traditional corrosion mechanisms associated with aluminum.

This provides an important durability advantage in laboratories where rotors experience frequent exposure to biological samples, moisture, refrigeration, and cleaning solutions.

Fatigue Resistance

Repeated high-speed operation subjects centrifuge rotors to substantial cyclic mechanical loading.

Every acceleration and deceleration cycle places stress on the rotor body.

Fiberlite carbon composite construction provides excellent resistance to fatigue, helping maintain dimensional stability through repeated operating cycles.

Routine inspection remains essential, however.

Carbon fiber rotors should be examined for evidence of impact, delamination, unusual wear, damaged cavities, drive-interface deterioration, lid problems, or other conditions that could compromise safe operation.

Lightweight Rotor Handling

Large metallic 250 mL centrifuge rotors can be heavy and awkward to remove from a centrifuge chamber.

Carbon fiber construction substantially reduces rotor mass.

This can make the F14-6x250y easier to:

  • Install

  • Remove

  • Transport

  • Clean

  • Inspect

  • Store

For laboratories where rotors are changed frequently, reduced weight can provide an important ergonomic benefit while also reducing the risk of damaging the rotor or centrifuge drive during handling.

250 mL Bottle Compatibility

The F14-6x250y is designed around compatible 250 mL centrifuge bottles.

Depending on the exact rotor configuration, approved bottles can include selected:

  • Polycarbonate bottles

  • PPCO bottles

  • Nalgene bottles

  • Fiberlite bottles

  • Other manufacturer-approved centrifuge vessels

Bottle selection is critical in superspeed centrifugation.

A bottle that physically fits into the rotor cavity is not automatically safe to operate at 14,000 rpm or 30,000 x g.

Laboratories must verify the maximum:

RPM rating
RCF rating
Sample density
Fill volume
Closure requirements
Chemical compatibility

for the specific bottle being used.

Smaller Tube Formats with Adapters

Depending on configuration and available adapters, the F14-6x250 family can also support smaller tube sizes.

Manufacturer documentation for related F14-6x250 configurations identifies adapters for vessel formats including:

  • 85 mL Oak Ridge tubes

  • 50 mL Oak Ridge tubes

  • 30 mL Oak Ridge tubes

  • 16 mL Oak Ridge tubes

  • 15 mL conical tubes

  • Other smaller round-bottom tube formats

This flexibility can allow one rotor to support several different sample-volume ranges.

Only manufacturer-approved or properly validated tube and adapter combinations should be used.

Biocontainment Heritage

The F14-6x250y has documented biocontainment testing within the Fiberlite product family.

The original containment certification identifies a Piramoon Technologies Fiberlite F14-6x250y rotor tested at its maximum 14,000 rpm and demonstrated to contain a spill within the rotor under the specified test method.

For biological laboratories, sealed-rotor capability can provide an important additional layer of protection when processing cell cultures, microorganisms, or other samples capable of producing aerosols.

Biocontainment depends on the entire rotor system, however, including the correct lid, seals, O-rings, vessels, and operating procedures.

Piramoon Technologies & Fiberlite Rotor History

Some F14-6x250y rotors may carry Piramoon Technologies markings, while later documentation and inventory may identify the same Fiberlite product family under Thermo Scientific.

This is not unusual.

Piramoon Technologies was associated with the development and production of Fiberlite carbon fiber centrifuge rotors, and original manufacturer documentation for the F14-6x250y specifically identifies Piramoon Technologies Inc. Fiberlite equipment.

Thermo Scientific subsequently marketed and supported Fiberlite rotors within its centrifuge portfolio.

For this reason, laboratories searching for:

Piramoon F14-6x250y
Fiberlite F14-6x250y
Thermo Fiberlite F14-6x250y

may be looking for rotors from the same broader Fiberlite product lineage.

The exact rotor label, catalog number, and drive interface should always determine compatibility.

F14-6x250y vs. F14-14x50cy

These two Fiberlite rotors emphasize different types of throughput.

The F14-6x250y holds 6 x 250 mL, providing a total nominal capacity of 1.5 liters.

The F14-14x50cy holds 14 x 50 mL, providing 700 mL total nominal capacity.

Choose the F14-6x250y when larger batch volume is the priority.

Choose the F14-14x50cy when the laboratory needs to process a larger number of separate 50 mL samples simultaneously.

Both provide high-speed fixed-angle centrifugation, but their sample formats address distinctly different workflows.

F14-6x250y vs. F20-12x50 LEX

The F20-12x50 LEX prioritizes higher centrifugal force, while the F14-6x250y emphasizes greater sample volume.

The F14-6x250y provides:

6 x 250 mL
1.5 L total capacity
Approximately 30,240 x g

The F20-12x50 LEX provides:

12 x 50 mL
600 mL total capacity
Up to approximately 51,428 x g in a LYNX 6000

For large-volume cell harvesting, lysate clarification, or protein precipitation, the F14-6x250y is generally the better choice.

For smaller-volume separations requiring significantly higher RCF, the F20-12x50 LEX may be preferable.

F14-6x250y vs. Large Swinging-Bucket Rotors

Large-capacity swinging-bucket rotors can offer substantial sample volume and flexible labware options, but they generally operate at lower maximum centrifugal forces than superspeed fixed-angle designs.

The F14-6x250y reaches approximately 30,000 x g, making it particularly effective for pelleting and clarification.

A swinging-bucket rotor may be preferable for:

  • Density gradients

  • Horizontal separation interfaces

  • Microplates

  • Blood tubes

  • Specialty bucket-based labware

The F14-6x250y is better optimized for rapid sedimentation and pellet formation in larger-volume bottles.

Centrifuge Compatibility

One important consideration with the F14-6x250y is that Fiberlite produced multiple centrifuge-specific versions and drive configurations.

F14-6x250-series rotors have appeared in configurations associated with several generations of laboratory centrifuges.

Depending on the exact rotor catalog number and drive interface, compatible systems may include certain:

  • Thermo Scientific centrifuges

  • Sorvall centrifuges

  • LYNX-series centrifuges

  • Legacy RC-series centrifuges

  • Other superspeed centrifuge platforms

The model name alone should never be used as the sole basis for determining compatibility.

Before purchasing or installing a used rotor, confirm:

  1. Rotor model

  2. Rotor catalog or part number

  3. Drive interface

  4. Centrifuge model

  5. Maximum permitted rotor speed in that centrifuge

  6. Compatible lid and accessories

American Instrument Exchange can help buyers determine compatibility between a specific rotor and centrifuge before purchase.

Legacy F14-6x250 Versions vs. Current Fiberlite Rotors

Fiberlite has produced several generations of 6 x 250 mL carbon fiber rotors.

Although they may share similar names and capacities, differences can include:

  • Centrifuge drive interface

  • Catalog number

  • Rotor lid

  • Auto-ID capability

  • Maximum permitted speed

  • Maximum RCF

  • Accessories

  • Bottle compatibility

A newer LYNX-compatible F14-6x250y should not automatically be assumed interchangeable with an older Piramoon or legacy Sorvall configuration.

This is especially important when purchasing a replacement rotor for an existing centrifuge.

Rotor Inspection & Testing by American Instrument Exchange

Centrifuge rotors are safety-critical components, so American Instrument Exchange carefully evaluates pre-owned rotors before offering them for laboratory use.

Inspection of the Fiberlite F14-6x250y may include evaluation of:

  • Carbon fiber rotor body

  • Tube cavities

  • Drive interface

  • Rotor lid

  • Locking mechanism

  • O-rings and seals

  • Identification markings

  • Signs of impact

  • Signs of delamination

  • Abnormal wear

  • Overall mechanical condition

Whenever possible, the rotor is installed in a compatible centrifuge and operated to verify proper fit and performance.

Users should continue to inspect all centrifuge rotors before operation and follow appropriate manufacturer guidance regarding cleaning, maintenance, operating limits, and service life.

Customers who cancel orders after refurbishing has begun will be subject to a cancellation and restocking fee of between 20% and 40%.

Are discounts available for educational or non-profit institutions, or for bulk purchases?

Yes – call or email us today with a list of equipment you're looking for and we can potentially put together a quote that includes a discount.

How does your price matching policy work?

We strive to keep our pricing competitive and reasonable. If you find comparable items for sale at a lower price from other vendors please send us a link and or quote for the item and we'll do our best to match or beat the price.

Can I see the equipment in person before committing to a purchase?

Customers are welcome to make an appointment to view equipment in our warehouse. Given our workload we may not be able to test or clean the equipment prior to your arrival if you have not committed to an order.

1023 Western Avenue is a working warehouse, not a showroom, and customers should dress appropriately and wear closed toe shoes.

Can I ship products that I purchased elsewhere to American Instrument for repair?

Yes – please see our repair services page for more information.
