Refurbished Thermo Scientific 1375 Biosafety Cabinet for Sale

The Thermo Scientific 1375 is a 4-foot Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet designed to provide personnel, product, and environmental protection for cell culture, microbiology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical research, clinical laboratories, and other contamination-sensitive biological applications. Part of Thermo Scientific's proven 1300 Series A2 platform, the 1375 combines a space-efficient 4-foot footprint with a 10-inch working sash opening, 304 stainless steel interior, intelligent airflow management, and energy-efficient brushless DC motor technology.

With approximately 47 inches of interior working width, the Thermo 1375 provides substantial room for routine cell culture and biological research while occupying considerably less laboratory space than a 5- or 6-foot biosafety cabinet. Researchers can organize culture vessels, pipettes, media bottles, tube racks, aspiration equipment, and other materials within the work area while maintaining a compact overall laboratory footprint.

One of the defining characteristics of the Thermo 1375 is its 10-inch working sash opening. This provides greater vertical access to the work chamber than closely related 4-foot Thermo 1300 Series models configured with an 8-inch operating opening. The additional access can be useful when transferring larger items into the cabinet or when laboratory personnel simply prefer the working ergonomics of a 10-inch sash configuration.

The 1375 also features a 304 stainless steel chamber and flat, single-piece stainless steel work tray designed for durability and straightforward cleaning. Combined with the cabinet's 10° sloped front, comfortable armrests, low-noise operation, and large unobstructed work surface, this makes the 1375 particularly well suited to laboratories where researchers spend substantial amounts of time performing cell culture or other repetitive biological procedures.

At American Instrument Exchange, each Thermo Scientific 1375 biosafety cabinet is inspected and tested by our technicians prior to shipment. Overview

The Thermo Scientific 1375 combines the containment capabilities of a Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet with a practical 4-foot footprint and the operator-focused design of Thermo's 1300 Series A2 platform.

As a Type A2 BSC, the 1375 uses inward airflow through the front opening to help protect personnel from aerosols generated within the work area. HEPA-filtered vertical downflow helps protect samples and materials from airborne contamination, while exhaust air passes through HEPA filtration before leaving the cabinet.

The Thermo 1300 Series uses independent supply and exhaust blowers to manage downflow and inflow/exhaust velocities. This approach helps the cabinet maintain appropriate airflow relationships as operating conditions change.

For laboratories using their BSCs for extended periods each day, the 1375 also incorporates several features intended to improve operator comfort. A 10° sloped front creates a more ergonomic working position, while armrests positioned above the intake grille allow the operator to reach farther into the cabinet without unnecessarily obstructing critical airflow at the front opening.

The large, unobstructed work surface provides useful space for culture vessels, pipettes, media, sample racks, and other materials while the 4-foot cabinet width helps conserve laboratory floor space.

Why Choose the Thermo Scientific 1375?

The Thermo Scientific 1375 is particularly well suited for laboratories looking for a 4-foot stainless steel Class II Type A2 cabinet with a 10-inch operating opening.

For many cell culture and microbiology applications, a 4-foot BSC provides an excellent balance between working room and laboratory footprint. The 1375 provides nearly four feet of interior width without requiring the additional space associated with a 5- or 6-foot cabinet.

The 10-inch sash opening is an important consideration. Researchers who prefer greater vertical access to the work chamber may find the 1375 more comfortable than comparable 8-inch-opening cabinets. This can be particularly useful when larger culture vessels, instruments, racks, or other materials need to be moved into and out of the work area.

The stainless steel chamber is another advantage for laboratories where routine cleaning and disinfection are a priority. Its durable surfaces are well suited to the repeated cleaning associated with cell culture, microbiology, pharmaceutical research, and other contamination-sensitive applications.

Combined with the energy-efficient DC motor system, intelligent airflow management, ergonomic front slope, and proven Thermo 1300 Series platform, the 1375 provides a strong combination of containment performance, operator comfort, space efficiency, and long-term value.

Thermo Scientific 1375 vs. Thermo Scientific 1335

The Thermo Scientific 1375 and 1335 are closely related 4-foot Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinets, and distinguishing between them is particularly useful when purchasing refurbished equipment.

Both models are 120V, 4-foot Thermo 1300 Series A2 cabinets with stainless steel chambers. The most important difference is the working sash opening.

The Thermo 1375 has a 10-inch working opening, while the Thermo 1335 has an 8-inch working opening.

For laboratories that prefer greater vertical access to the work chamber, the 1375 may be the better choice. The additional two inches can make it easier to move larger items into and out of the cabinet and may provide a more comfortable working configuration for some operators.

The 1335 may instead be preferable for laboratories replacing an existing 8-inch-opening cabinet or standardizing their BSCs around that operating configuration.

Because the cabinets otherwise share many characteristics, the choice between a refurbished 1375 and 1335 may ultimately depend on sash-height preference, existing laboratory standards, application requirements, and current equipment availability.

Energy Efficiency & Night-Setback Operation

Energy consumption can become significant in laboratories operating multiple biosafety cabinets, particularly when cabinets remain running for extended periods outside normal working hours.

The Thermo 1375 incorporates brushless DC motor technology designed to reduce energy consumption while supporting reliable airflow performance. The DC motor design can also help reduce heat output into the laboratory, potentially lowering the cooling demand associated with continuous BSC operation.

The 1300 Series also incorporates a night-setback mode. When the front sash is closed, intelligent speed control reduces blower speed to approximately 30% while maintaining reduced airflow through the cabinet.

This allows laboratories to decrease energy consumption during periods when the cabinet is not actively being used while continuing airflow through the work area. Reduced-speed operation can also decrease loading on the HEPA filters compared with operating continuously at full working airflow.

For facilities operating several biosafety cabinets, these energy-saving characteristics can become increasingly valuable over the equipment's service life.

Operator Comfort & Ergonomics

Biosafety cabinets are often used for repetitive procedures lasting several hours, making ergonomics an important consideration when choosing equipment for a cell culture or microbiology laboratory.

The Thermo 1375 incorporates a 10° sloped front intended to create a more comfortable seated working position and reduce operator fatigue. Armrests are positioned above the front intake grille so researchers can support their arms while maintaining the airflow pathway required at the cabinet opening.

The 10-inch working opening provides additional vertical access to the chamber, while the large unobstructed stainless steel work surface gives operators room to organize materials without unnecessary crowding.

Reduced operating noise further contributes to a more comfortable laboratory environment, particularly in facilities where multiple BSCs may operate simultaneously.

These characteristics make the Thermo 1375 particularly attractive for laboratories where technicians and researchers spend significant portions of the day working inside a biosafety cabinet.

Common Applications

The Thermo Scientific 1375 is well suited to mammalian cell and tissue culture, stem cell research, microbiology, molecular biology, virology, biotechnology research, pharmaceutical development, vaccine research, gene and cell therapy research, clinical and diagnostic procedures, and other applications requiring Class II Type A2 containment.

Its combination of a 4-foot work area and 10-inch operating opening makes it particularly practical for routine cell culture workflows where researchers need sufficient working room without dedicating the additional laboratory space required by a larger BSC.

Ideal Laboratory Environments

The Thermo Scientific 1375 is a strong choice for biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical research laboratories, university research centers, hospital laboratories, contract research organizations, clinical facilities, startup laboratories, government research facilities, and other life-science organizations requiring Class II Type A2 containment.

Its combination of 4-foot dimensions, 10-inch sash opening, stainless steel construction, energy-efficient DC motors, and ergonomic design makes the 1375 particularly useful for laboratories seeking a durable BSC for frequent daily use.

Compatible Laboratory Equipment

The Thermo Scientific 1375 fits naturally into cell culture, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, microbiology, and clinical research workflows where samples routinely move between multiple pieces of laboratory equipment.

For cell culture applications, the 1375 can be paired with CO₂ incubators for maintaining cultures, refrigerated centrifuges for harvesting and processing samples, laboratory refrigerators for media and reagent storage, and ultra-low temperature freezers for long-term preservation of biological materials.

Inverted microscopes, laboratory autoclaves, water baths, cryogenic storage systems, and additional biosafety cabinets can further support complete biological research workflows.

Both are 4-foot, 120V Class II Type A2 cabinets with stainless steel interiors. The most important difference is the working sash height.

The Thermo 1375 has a 10-inch working opening, while the Thermo 1335 has an 8-inch working opening.

The 1375 may therefore appeal to researchers who prefer additional vertical access to the chamber, while the 1335 can be useful when replacing an existing 8-inch-opening cabinet or standardizing a laboratory around that operating configuration.

What is the difference between the Thermo 1375 and Thermo 1385?

The Thermo 1375 and 1385 are closely related 4-foot, 120V, 10-inch-opening 1300 Series A2 cabinets, but Thermo's model documentation distinguishes their factory configurations.

The 1375 is the stainless steel interior configuration, while the 1385 uses the coated interior configuration and includes an adjustable-height stand, UV light, and armrests as part of its specified factory package.

For refurbished equipment, actual accessories should always be confirmed on the individual cabinet because stands, UV systems, armrests, and other components can vary depending on how the unit was originally configured and subsequently used.

Why choose a 10-inch-opening biosafety cabinet?

A 10-inch operating opening provides additional vertical access to the work chamber compared with an 8-inch configuration.

That extra clearance can make it easier to transfer larger vessels, racks, instruments, and other materials into and out of the cabinet. Some operators also simply prefer the ergonomics of working through the larger opening.

The appropriate configuration depends on laboratory workflow, operator preference, and existing equipment standards.

Does the Thermo 1375 have a stainless steel interior?

Yes. The Thermo 1375 is a 304 stainless steel interior model.

Stainless steel provides a durable chamber that is well suited to routine cleaning and disinfection, making the 1375 particularly attractive for cell culture and other contamination-sensitive biological applications.

Its approximately 47-inch-wide interior provides useful room for culture vessels, pipettes, media bottles, aspiration equipment, racks, and other materials used during routine cell culture procedures.

Operators should maintain appropriate work practices and avoid blocking the front and rear airflow grilles.

Should I choose a 4-foot or 6-foot biosafety cabinet?

For many laboratories, a 4-foot BSC such as the Thermo 1375 provides an excellent balance between workspace and laboratory footprint.

A 6-foot cabinet may be preferable for procedures involving larger equipment, unusually high sample volumes, numerous culture vessels, or workflows that genuinely require additional working room.

A 4-foot cabinet can be especially useful for individual workstations, startup laboratories, smaller cell culture rooms, and facilities that would rather install multiple dedicated BSCs than a smaller number of oversized shared cabinets.

How much weight can the Thermo 1375 work area support?

Thermo specifies a maximum load of approximately 55 lb on the individual work surface and 110 lb across the overall working area for the 4-foot 1300 Series A2 platform.

Although this is sufficient for typical culture vessels, racks, pipettes, and small laboratory equipment, heavy instruments should not be placed inside the BSC without confirming that their weight, dimensions, heat output, and effect on airflow are appropriate.

How loud is the Thermo 1375 during operation?

Thermo specifies an operating noise level of approximately 63 dB(A), ±2 dB, for its 4-foot, 10-inch-opening 1300 Series A2 models.

Actual perceived noise in the laboratory will also depend on room acoustics, surrounding equipment, cabinet condition, and installation.

What do the airflow monitoring systems on the Thermo 1375 do?

The Thermo 1300 Series incorporates airflow monitoring and control systems intended to help maintain appropriate operating conditions and alert the user when certain parameters move outside their expected range.

These systems provide useful real-time operating information, but they do not replace periodic field certification. Certification directly evaluates cabinet airflow, HEPA filter integrity, and containment-related performance.

What does a CAL message or airflow alarm on a Thermo 1375 mean?

A persistent calibration or airflow warning indicates that the cabinet requires evaluation rather than simply assuming it is operating normally.

Possible causes can include calibration status, HEPA filter loading, airflow changes, blower performance, sash position, sensor issues, or another condition affecting the cabinet's operating parameters.

For laboratories throughout New England, AIE Laboratory Services can troubleshoot Thermo 1300 Series BSCs, evaluate airflow performance, perform repairs or HEPA filter replacement when necessary, and recertify the cabinet following service.

Are new HEPA filters installed in this refurbished Thermo 1375?

Unless otherwise specified, American Instrument Exchange installs new HEPA filters before shipment.

The cabinet is also inspected, cleaned, refurbished, and functionally tested prior to delivery.

Once installed at the customer's laboratory, the BSC should be field certified before being placed into biological service.

Does the Thermo 1375 need to be certified after delivery?

Yes. The cabinet should be field certified after installation and before biological use.

Transportation, placement, and the surrounding laboratory environment can affect cabinet operating conditions. Field certification verifies that the BSC is performing appropriately in its actual installation.

Periodic recertification should also be incorporated into the laboratory's maintenance program.

Can AIE Laboratory Services certify a Thermo 1375?

Yes. For laboratories throughout Greater Boston and New England, AIE Laboratory Services provides biosafety cabinet certification, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, HEPA filter replacement, decontamination, and related services.

The cabinet does not need to have originally been purchased from American Instrument Exchange for AIE Laboratory Services to evaluate or service it.

I already own a Thermo 1375. Is it worth repairing?

In many cases, yes.

The Thermo 1300 Series is a widely installed biosafety cabinet platform, and problems involving controls, airflow sensors, blowers, alarms, sash components, lighting, or HEPA filters do not necessarily mean that the cabinet must be replaced.

The decision depends on the overall condition of the cabinet, the component requiring repair, parts availability, repair cost, and whether the BSC can continue to meet certification requirements.

For laboratories throughout New England, AIE Laboratory Services can evaluate an existing Thermo 1375 and help determine whether repair or replacement is the more practical option.

I purchased my Thermo 1375 somewhere else. Can AIE Laboratory Services still service it?

Yes. A biosafety cabinet does not need to have been purchased from American Instrument Exchange for AIE Laboratory Services to certify, troubleshoot, maintain, or repair it.

This can be particularly useful for laboratories operating multiple Thermo 1300 Series cabinets acquired at different times or from different suppliers.

Can American Instrument Exchange help replace an older Thermo 1375?

Yes. If an existing Thermo 1375 has reached the point where replacement is more practical than repair, American Instrument Exchange can help identify available refurbished cabinets with similar dimensions and operating characteristics.

An exact 1375 may not always be available, but several Thermo 1300 Series models share the same basic 4-foot platform.

When selecting a replacement, important differences such as 8-inch versus 10-inch working openings, stainless steel versus coated interiors, electrical configuration, and included accessories should be considered rather than selecting a cabinet based on width alone.

Can American Instrument Exchange supply multiple matching 4-foot Thermo biosafety cabinets?

Depending on current inventory, yes. American Instrument Exchange frequently works with laboratories outfitting new spaces, expanding cell culture operations, or replacing multiple older BSCs.

When several identical Thermo 1375 cabinets are not available, we may be able to identify closely related 4-foot Thermo 1300 Series cabinets with compatible dimensions and operating characteristics.

We strive to keep our pricing competitive and reasonable. If you find comparable items for sale at a lower price from other vendors please send us a link and or quote for the item and we'll do our best to match or beat the price.

Can I see the equipment in person before committing to a purchase?

Customers are welcome to make an appointment to view equipment in our warehouse. Given our workload we may not be able to test or clean the equipment prior to your arrival if you have not committed to an order.
