For laboratories preserving irreplaceable biological materials, maintaining temperatures below the capabilities of even the best ultra-low freezer is often essential. The Thermo Forma CryoPlus 4 Liquid Nitrogen Storage System provides dependable long-term cryogenic storage using liquid nitrogen, making it an excellent solution for stem cells, cell therapies, reproductive samples, tissue specimens, and other valuable biological materials requiring storage between -150°C and -196°C.
With an impressive 552-liter liquid nitrogen capacity and storage space for up to 38,500 standard 2.0 mL cryovials (depending on rack configuration), the CryoPlus 4 is designed for biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, hospitals, IVF laboratories, universities, cell therapy facilities, and biobanks managing large cryogenic repositories. Automatic liquid nitrogen filling, intelligent monitoring, and comprehensive alarm systems help protect valuable samples while reducing the day-to-day maintenance associated with manual-fill storage systems.
Many laboratories incorporate a cryogenic storage system like the CryoPlus 4 alongside biosafety cabinets for sterile sample preparation, controlled-rate freezers for optimized freezing protocols, ultra-low freezers for intermediate storage, and laboratory refrigerators for short-term reagent storage to create a complete cryopreservation workflow.

The CryoPlus 4 was engineered for laboratories requiring dependable long-term cryogenic preservation with minimal operator intervention. Its automatic liquid nitrogen fill system continuously maintains programmed liquid levels, eliminating the need for routine manual filling while helping ensure stable storage temperatures.
Unlike mechanical ultra-low freezers that rely on compressors, the CryoPlus 4 stores samples using liquid nitrogen, allowing laboratories to maintain storage temperatures approaching -196°C. A temperature sleeve promotes colder vapor temperatures near the top of the vessel for efficient vapor-phase storage, while the vacuum-insulated stainless steel chamber minimizes liquid nitrogen consumption and improves thermal performance. The top-mounted controller provides convenient programming and continuously monitors liquid nitrogen level, temperature, and alarm status.
The Thermo Forma CryoPlus 4 is commonly used for storing:
Stem cells
CAR-T cell products
Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)
Cell lines
Cord blood
Bone marrow
Embryos
Oocytes
Sperm samples
Tissue specimens
DNA repositories
Clinical trial materials
Long-term biological archives
Its large storage capacity makes it particularly well suited for laboratories maintaining centralized cryogenic repositories.
The CryoPlus 4 is an excellent choice for:
Biotechnology companies
Cell and gene therapy laboratories
Pharmaceutical manufacturers
IVF laboratories
Hospitals
Universities
Biobanks
Government research laboratories
Regenerative medicine facilities
Laboratories requiring automated liquid nitrogen storage for thousands of biological samples will appreciate the system's combination of capacity, monitoring, and dependable cryogenic performance.
Mechanical ultra-low freezers provide excellent long-term storage for many biological materials at temperatures as low as -86°C. However, highly sensitive biological samples—including stem cells, reproductive specimens, and advanced cell therapies—often benefit from storage at liquid nitrogen temperatures approaching -196°C.
The CryoPlus 4 provides those cryogenic temperatures while adding automatic filling, electronic monitoring, and comprehensive alarm protection to simplify laboratory operation and improve sample security.
The CryoPlus 4 is commonly used to preserve stem cells, CAR-T therapies, embryos, oocytes, sperm samples, cord blood, bone marrow, tissue specimens, DNA libraries, and other biological materials requiring long-term cryogenic preservation.

Unlike compressor-based ultra-low freezers, the CryoPlus 4 uses liquid nitrogen as its cooling source. Operating costs are therefore driven primarily by liquid nitrogen consumption rather than electrical energy. The vacuum-insulated vessel, insulated lid, and automatic level control help reduce evaporation while maintaining dependable cryogenic temperatures. Laboratories should also consider liquid nitrogen delivery schedules and backup supply planning when implementing large cryogenic storage systems.
Specifications compiled from Thermo Scientific manufacturer literature and American Instrument Exchange product information.
Every Thermo Forma CryoPlus 4 received by American Instrument Exchange undergoes a comprehensive inspection before shipment. Our technicians verify controller functionality, automatic fill operation, alarm systems, liquid level monitoring, lid operation, vacuum vessel integrity, electronic controls, and overall cabinet condition before thoroughly cleaning the unit for delivery.
Laboratories building complete cryopreservation facilities frequently purchase biosafety cabinets, controlled-rate freezers, ultra-low freezers, laboratory refrigerators, and centrifuges from American Instrument Exchange.
The CryoPlus 4 ships by freight from American Instrument Exchange. Before installation, laboratories should verify doorway clearances, floor loading capacity, electrical service, liquid nitrogen supply availability, and adequate ventilation. Facilities should also establish procedures for liquid nitrogen delivery, monitoring, and emergency response before placing the system into service.
How many samples can the CryoPlus 4 hold?
Depending on the rack configuration, the CryoPlus 4 can store up to 38,500 standard 2.0 mL cryovials, making it suitable for large institutional repositories and biobanks.
Can the CryoPlus 4 operate in vapor phase?
Yes. The system supports both liquid and vapor phase storage, and its integrated temperature sleeve improves temperature uniformity during vapor-phase operation.
Why choose an automatic-fill cryogenic storage system?
Automatic filling reduces manual maintenance, maintains consistent liquid nitrogen levels, improves sample protection, and provides electronic monitoring and alarm capabilities that are not available with traditional manual-fill dewars.
How is the CryoPlus 4 tested before shipment?
Every refurbished Thermo Forma CryoPlus 4 is inspected and tested by American Instrument Exchange technicians to verify controller operation, automatic fill functionality, alarm systems, liquid level monitoring, and overall system performance before shipment.
