Common Applications and Refrigerated vs. Non-Refrigerated Operation

The Thermo Scientific Savant SpeedVac SPD1030 is commonly used for DNA and RNA concentration, PCR sample preparation, peptide and protein concentration, enzyme preparation, HPLC fraction drying, metabolomics, proteomics, pharmaceutical research, forensic toxicology, environmental sample preparation, and analytical chemistry workflows. Unlike refrigerated centrifuges, the SpeedVac is specifically engineered for solvent evaporation and sample concentration rather than particle separation. Its programmable heating system and vacuum control allow samples to dry efficiently while reducing the risk of sample degradation or loss.

Rotor Compatibility and Included Accessories

Rotor compatibility is one of the most important considerations when purchasing a SpeedVac concentrator.

Depending on configuration, the SPD1030 supports:

  • Microcentrifuge tube rotors
  • 15 mL tube rotors
  • 50 mL tube rotors
  • Microplate rotors
  • Glass vial rotors
  • HPLC fraction collection tubes
  • Specialty evaporation rotors

The SPD1030 platform accommodates up to 120 × 1.5 mL tubes, 10 × 15 mL tubes, 6 × 50 mL tubes, or two microplates, depending on the installed rotor configuration. Multiple rotor options allow laboratories to configure the system for a wide variety of sample formats. Customers should verify included rotors prior to purchase, as system configurations can vary between instruments.

Power Requirements and Shipping Considerations

The Thermo Scientific Savant SpeedVac SPD1030 is designed for benchtop installation and typically operates on standard 115V electrical service, depending on configuration. Laboratories should verify electrical compatibility, available bench space, and whether the concentrator will be used as a standalone unit or with an external cold trap and vacuum source.

Because the SpeedVac contains precision electronics, vacuum components, and heating elements, the instrument is carefully packaged for shipment. American Instrument Exchange can assist customers with shipping coordination and installation planning.

Thermo Scientific Savant SpeedVac SPD1030 Vacuum Concentrator Frequently Asked Questions

How is a SpeedVac different from a centrifuge?

A traditional centrifuge separates materials based on density, while a SpeedVac removes solvents by combining centrifugal force, vacuum, and controlled heat to concentrate samples without boiling or splashing.

What types of samples are commonly processed in the SPD1030?

The SPD1030 is frequently used for DNA and RNA precipitates, PCR products, peptides, proteins, enzymes, HPLC fractions, metabolomics samples, and pharmaceutical compounds.

Can the SpeedVac dry organic solvents?

Yes. The SPD1030 is designed to evaporate water as well as many common laboratory solvents, including ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, acetonitrile, and other compatible organic solvents when used with the appropriate accessories.

Does this SpeedVac include a rotor?

Rotor configurations vary by instrument. Please contact American Instrument Exchange to confirm which rotor, if any, is included with this particular system.

Can the SPD1030 process microplates?

Yes. With the appropriate rotor, the SPD1030 can accommodate up to two microplates, making it useful for high-throughput molecular biology and screening applications.

Why do laboratories use a vacuum concentrator instead of heat alone?

Vacuum concentration lowers the boiling point of solvents, allowing samples to dry faster at lower temperatures. This helps protect heat-sensitive proteins, nucleic acids, enzymes, and other valuable biological materials.

Is the Thermo Scientific SPD1030 suitable for proteomics and mass spectrometry sample preparation?

Yes. The SPD1030 is widely used in proteomics laboratories to concentrate peptide samples prior to LC-MS/MS analysis because it minimizes sample loss while efficiently removing solvents.
