Overview

The Thermo Scientific SC150 is a digital immersion circulator paired on this system with a Haake A5B stainless steel bath. Unlike the recirculating chillers and dynamic temperature-control systems used primarily with external equipment, this configuration provides a usable temperature-controlled bath where samples, vessels, and laboratory materials can be placed directly into the circulating fluid.

The SC150 controller continuously heats and circulates the bath fluid to promote stable, uniform temperatures throughout the working area. A self-tuning PID controller regulates heating performance, while the digital interface allows operators to select and monitor operating temperatures.

The system can also circulate temperature-controlled fluid to compatible external equipment. This makes the SC150/A5B useful both as a conventional laboratory circulating water bath and as a source of heated circulating fluid for externally connected applications.

Common Applications

The Thermo SC150 heated circulating bath is suitable for laboratory procedures requiring samples or vessels to be maintained at a consistent elevated temperature. Typical applications include sample preparation, materials testing, calibration procedures, reagent warming, incubation, chemical research, viscosity-related testing, and other temperature-sensitive laboratory methods.

Because the system also supports external circulation, conditioned bath fluid can be directed through compatible equipment such as condensers, jacketed vessels, bioreactors, and other apparatus requiring a circulating heat-transfer fluid.

The combination of direct bath access and external circulation makes this configuration more versatile than a simple non-circulating laboratory water bath.

Ideal Laboratory Types

The Thermo SC150 is appropriate for biotechnology, pharmaceutical, chemistry, clinical research, materials-science, quality-control, industrial, academic, and general research laboratories.

Its relatively large bath volume can be particularly useful for laboratories that need to accommodate multiple sample containers or larger vessels while maintaining consistent temperature conditions throughout the bath.

Temperature Control & Stability

The SC150 controller provides specified temperature stability of ±0.02°C under manufacturer-defined operating conditions. Continuous fluid circulation helps minimize temperature gradients within the bath, providing more uniform conditions than would typically be expected from a basic non-circulating water bath.

The controller uses self-tuning PID technology to optimize temperature regulation for the installed bath and operating conditions. Five programmable setpoint temperatures allow frequently used temperatures to be stored for convenient recall.

The SC150 controller can operate at temperatures as high as 150°C when an appropriate heat-transfer fluid is used. When operated as a heated bath without supplemental refrigeration, the practical lower temperature is approximately 13°C above ambient. With suitable supplemental cooling, the A5B/SC150 configuration can reach temperatures below ambient.

Users should always select a heat-transfer fluid appropriate for the desired operating temperature rather than assuming water can be used throughout the SC150's full temperature range.

Circulation & Pump Performance

The SC150 provides a maximum circulation flow rate of approximately 17 L/min. Two pump-speed settings allow users to adjust circulation according to the application and can help reduce unnecessary turbulence when working with samples directly in the bath.

Internal circulation continuously moves fluid through the reservoir, helping transfer heat efficiently and maintain consistent temperature conditions across the working area.

The circulator can also pump to an external system. This allows the SC150 to provide temperature-controlled fluid to compatible laboratory equipment rather than functioning exclusively as an immersion bath.

Actual external flow will depend on tubing diameter and length, fittings, fluid viscosity, operating temperature, and the hydraulic resistance of the connected equipment.

Refurbishment & Testing

This used Thermo Scientific SC150 heated circulating bath is refurbished and tested by American Instrument Exchange before shipment. Our technicians inspect the heater, circulation pump, temperature controller, bath, electrical components, safety systems, and user controls and operate the system to confirm proper functionality.

Temperature-controlled equipment is tested using NIST-traceable probes and data loggers. The bath is operated under simulated laboratory conditions to verify heating, circulation, temperature regulation, and general performance. The stainless steel bath, controller, and fluid-contact areas are also cleaned and inspected prior to shipment.

If your application requires operation at a particular temperature or has specific testing requirements, contact American Instrument Exchange before shipment. When practical, our technicians can incorporate those conditions into final testing.

A 90-day warranty is included with this refurbished Thermo Scientific circulating bath.

Choosing the Right Heated Circulating Bath

When selecting a heated laboratory bath, buyers should consider maximum temperature, bath capacity, usable working area, temperature stability, circulation performance, heat-transfer fluid requirements, and whether external circulation will be needed.

The SC150 with A5B bath is particularly well suited for applications requiring a relatively large working bath combined with precise circulating temperature control. Its 12–21 L operating volume provides considerably more usable capacity than a small benchtop bath, while the SC150 controller supports temperatures as high as 150°C.

For applications requiring routine operation substantially below ambient temperature, a refrigerated bath circulator may be a better choice. Laboratories requiring only moderate-temperature sample warming without external circulation may instead find that a simpler laboratory water bath meets their needs.

American Instrument Exchange can help compare available used and refurbished water baths and circulators based on bath capacity, operating temperature, stability, circulation requirements, and application.

Related Equipment

American Instrument Exchange stocks a variety of laboratory circulators for heated, refrigerated, and external temperature-control applications. Laboratories considering the SC150 may also want to compare available laboratory water baths, as well as reactors and fermenters, evaporators and extractors, and other refurbished laboratory equipment.

Thermo Scientific SC150 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum temperature of the Thermo SC150?

The Thermo Scientific SC150 controller can operate at temperatures up to 150°C when used with an appropriate bath and heat-transfer fluid.

What is the capacity of this SC150 circulating bath?

This unit combines the SC150 controller with a Haake A5B bath providing an operating fluid volume of approximately 12–21 liters.

How stable is the temperature in the Thermo SC150?

Thermo specifies temperature stability of ±0.02°C for the SC150 under defined operating conditions. Continuous fluid circulation also helps maintain consistent temperatures throughout the bath.

Can the Thermo SC150 circulate fluid to external equipment?

Yes. The SC150 supports external circulation and can provide temperature-controlled fluid to compatible equipment such as jacketed vessels, condensers, and other laboratory apparatus.

Can the SC150 cool below room temperature?

The SC150 itself is a heated immersion circulator and does not contain an integrated refrigeration system. Below-ambient operation requires supplemental cooling or installation in a refrigerated bath. With appropriate cooling, the A5B configuration can support temperatures down to approximately -5°C.

Can water be used at the SC150's maximum temperature?

No. The appropriate heat-transfer fluid depends on the operating temperature. Water is suitable only within its safe working range; higher-temperature applications require a compatible heat-transfer fluid rated for those conditions.

Does this refurbished Thermo SC150 include a warranty?

Yes. This used Thermo Scientific SC150 heated circulating bath is refurbished and tested by American Instrument Exchange and includes a 90-day warranty.
