Thermo TSX-Series – Features
No need to worry about where your samples are stored within the freezer. With peak variation less than 5°C, your samples are protected and safely stored throughout the entire cabinet space.
The Thermo Scientific TSX40086A Ultra-Low Freezer has a long warm-up time from -50°C to -80°C at 4.86 hours and is quiet enough to reside directly in the laboratory, rather than in the hall. At just 45.5 dBA, the TSX Series’ sound level is comparable to a home refrigerator.
Thermo TSX’s V-drive adaptive control is designed to detect usage patterns such as door openings when a higher compressor speed is needed and periods of stability where the compressor runs at a lower speed, saving energy without compromising protection. The Thermo TSX40086 consumes 10.7 kW-H/day in standard mode and just 8.5 kW-H/day in high-performance mode.
Thermo TSX40086 - Testing
Our technicians verify the accuracy of temperature controls and readouts of all freezers, making sure that the units hold temperature to within the manufacturer specified tolerance. We replace any hardware or parts as is necessary and if needed replace refrigerant. We clean all freezers thoroughly prior to shipment.

Thermo TSX40086 ultralow freezer frequently asked questions
How is the TSX40086 different from older Thermo Revco ultra-low freezers?
Compared to legacy Thermo Revco cascade systems, the TSX40086 uses modern variable speed compressor technology rather than traditional fixed-speed cascade refrigeration.
This provides faster temperature recovery after door openings, improved temperature uniformity, lower energy consumption, reduced strain on the compressors and HVAC system, and quieter lab operation. The upgraded insulation and control system also enhance overall reliability and operational efficiency.
Why does the TSX40086 have only two inner doors?
The two insulated inner doors on the TSX40086 are thicker and more energy-efficient than the multiple smaller doors used on older models. This minimizes air exchange during access, improves temperature stability, improves recovery time after door openings, and reduces overall energy consumption.
Although earlier ULT freezers often had four or five inner doors, the improved insulation of the TSX series allows for optimal performance with a simplified two-door configuration. Four or five door configurations are available, but have to be custom ordered from Thermo.
What is V-Drive technology in the Thermo TSX40086?
V-Drive stands for Variable Drive technology. The TSX40086 features a variable speed compressor that automatically adjusts cooling output based on demand. When the freezer door is opened and temperature rises, the compressor increases speed to restore setpoint quickly. Once stable conditions are achieved, it slows down to maintain temperature efficiently.
V-Drive units show better temperature control at -80°C, improved energy efficiency, less mechanical wear, and better long-term reliability than standard dual-compressor models. All Thermo TSX Series refrigerators and freezers utilize this advanced compressor technology.
Is the TSX40086 ultralow freezer energy efficient?
Yes. The Thermo TSX40086 ultra-low freezer is designed to consume significantly less energy than many traditional cascade ULT freezers. Many laboratories choose the TSX series specifically to support sustainability initiatives and lower long-term ownership costs.
Is the touchscreen interface easy to use?
Absolutely. The integrated touchscreen control panel is intuitive and highly functional. It allows users to monitor real-time temperature and export data logs, as well as cccess alarm history and run built-in diagnostics. The onboard data logging is particularly helpful for compliance, validation, and calibration documentation.
