Thermo Forma TSX Series -86°C Ultralow freezer

The Thermo TSX70086 Ultralow Freezer is a high efficiency ultralow temperature freezer with excellent temperature uniformity. The TSX70086A is extremely energy efficient, requiring only 10.2 kWh/day to store up to 700 two-inch cryoboxes. Additionally, the quiet operation (48 dBA) provides welcome relief from the louder compressor operation of comparably sized models.

Thermo TSX70086 Ultralow Freezer features

  • Model TSX70086A
  • 33.5 cubic foot capacity
  • Temperature range: -50°C to -86°C
  • LCD Touchscreen
  • 90-day warranty

The user-friendly touchscreen interface has an easy-to-use set-up wizard, event loc, temperature mapping and data downloads; capacitive touch, even when using latex gloves, improved clout-connected, wireless monitoring capability; advanced security features, and a built-in USB port that allows for quick data download for system diagnostics and analysis.

The TSX Series ultralow freezers were designed with sample storage security in mind. They feature outstanding peak variation when in high-performance mode: +/- 5°C; fast door-opening recovery: <30 minutes; outstanding temperature uniformity: +/– 5.2°C °; and long warm-up time: from –80°C to –50°C at <5.0 hours.

The ENERGY STAR certified Thermo Scientific TSX Series ultralow freezers are designed to meet the highest standards in reliability, sustainability and temperature management. At the heart of the TSX Series is V-drive technology, designed to adapt to user patterns, substantially reducing energy and HVAC costs without compromising performance.

All TSX Series freezers are manufactured in a zero-waste facility and are built with natural refrigerants and water-blown foam insulation, compliant with the U.S. EPA’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP), the European Union’s F-Gas compliance and other sustainability standards.

Testing

Most of our equipment is used and reconditioned. Our technicians verify the accuracy of temperature controls and readouts of all ultralow freezers, making sure that the units hold temperature to within the manufacturer specified tolerance. We replace any hardware or parts as is necessary and if needed replace refrigerant. We clean all freezers thoroughly prior to shipment.

Thermo Scientific TSX70086 Ultra Low Freezer — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Thermo TSX70086 freezer used for?

The Thermo Scientific TSX70086 is a -86°C ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezer designed for long-term storage of biological samples, vaccines and pharmaceuticals, and storage of cell cultures, DNA/RNA, and clinical specimens. It is commonly used in research labs, biobanks, hospitals, and pharmaceutical environments. The operating range is -50°C to -86°C and the typical setpoint is -80°C for most lab applications.

What is the V-drive technology Thermo keeps bragging about?

V-drive is a variable-speed compressor system that:

  • Adjusts cooling output based on usage patterns
  • Improves temperature stability
  • Reduces energy consumption

Unlike traditional single-speed compressors, the V-drive dynamically responds to door openings and load changes. Once temperature recovery is achieved and the temp of the chamber has stabilized, the compressor speed slows. This ensures both temperature stability and energy efficient operation. Thermo TSX series refrigerators, freezers, and ultralow freezers all feature V-Drive technology.

For the TSX70086 this means that the typical energy usage is low at ~9.4–10.2 kWh/day, using up to 70% less energy than older ULT freezers. Additionally, the natural refrigerant means there is zero ozone depletion potential and low global warming potential.

What type of controller does the Thermo TSX70086 use?

This freezer has a microprocessor control with touchscreen interface. Features include:

  • Temperature display and adjustment
  • Event logging
  • System diagnostics

What installation considerations are important when purchasing the Thermo TSX70086 ultralow?

  • Dedicated electrical circuit required
  • Proper grounding is mandatory
  • Unit must be level and well-ventilated
  • Avoid heat sources and direct sunlight
